In the decommissioning of the Fukushima-Daiichi (1F) Nuclear Power Plant, it is essential to understand characteristics of the melted core materials. The estimation of boride in the real debris is of great importance to develop safe debris removal plans. Hence, it is required to investigate the amount of boron in the melted core materials with nondestructive methods. Prompt gamma-ray activation analysis (PGAA) is one of the useful techniques to determine the amount of borides by means of the 478 keV prompt gamma-ray from neutron absorption reaction of boron. Moreover, it is well known that the width of the 478 keV gamma-ray peak is typically broadened due to the Doppler effect. The degree of the broadening is affected by coexisting materials, and can be recognized by the width of the prompt gamma-ray peak. As a feasibility study, the prompt gamma-ray from boride samples were measured using the ANNRI, NOBORU, and RADEN beamlines at the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) of Japan Proton Accelerator Complex (J-PARC).

was investigated using the
Si nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technique. We investigated the temperature and pressure dependencies of
-independent local fluctuations caused by the single-site Kondo effect. A universal scaling behavior observed on the energy scale of the local fluctuations in an entire pressure region demonstrates that a characteristic energy scale
of Kondo interactions monotonically increases by applying pressure without a critical anomaly around the quantum critical pressure
of antiferromagnetism. Our NMR result agrees with the Doniach picture of the heavy-fermion phase diagram, where the progressive delocalization of the
-electrons occurs across
, accompanied by the development of antiferromagnetic correlations among the
-electrons.

Times Cited Count:4 Percentile:35.41(Nuclear Science & Technology)Effects of zirconium oxides and oxidation products of zircaloy-4 on water radiolysis were investigated to predict the hydrogen generation from the water-immersed debris after a severe accident of a nuclear power plant. Observed yields of hydrogen in water containing the oxides were measured as a function of their weight fractions. Assuming that energies of Co-60 -ray deposited to water and the oxides brought about the water radiolysis to generate hydrogen independently, the radiolysis showed an additional term of hydrogen generation due to the energy deposition to the oxides. This term seemed to be dependent on the specific surface area or particle size of oxides, but not on the crystal structure of oxides in our experimental results. The oxides in distilled water gave the strong enhancement of term. The enhancement tended to saturate with increasing the weight fraction of oxides and was not apparent in the seawater.

. Theoretical analysis shows us that the linear dichroism reflects the anisotropic charge distributions resulting from a crystalline electric field. We have successfully determined the ground-state 4
symmetry for both compounds from the polarization-dependent angle resolved core-level spectra at a temperature well below the first excitation energy. The excited-state symmetry is also probed by temperature dependence of the linear dichroism where the high measurement temperatures are on the order of the crystal-field-splitting energies.

axes have been measured as a function of temperatures in the paramagnetic state. At ambient pressure, the Knight shifts show the Ising-type anisotropy along the
axis, which is similar to the magnetic susceptibility. The hyperfine coupling constants for
Si along the
and
axes have been determined from Knight shifts versus static susceptibility plots.
