Yoshida, Yukari*; Mizohata, Kensuke*; Matsumura, Akihiko*; Isono, Mayu*; Yako, Tomoko*; Nakano, Takashi*; Funayama, Tomoo; Kobayashi, Yasuhiko; Kanai, Tatsuaki*

JAEA-Review 2014-050, JAEA Takasaki Annual Report 2013, P. 81, 2015/03

In the clinical application of carbon-ion (C-ion) radiation therapy in Japan, different RBE values of carbons have been used for clinical and biological endpoints. The biological RBE (bRBE) was estimated by a method that is based on the linear-quadratic (LQ) model, and was defined ${it in vitro}$ at the 10% surviving fraction of human salivary gland (HSG) tumor cells. However, many of biological parameters, that is, type of tissues, different sort of cells, oxygenation levels, and all, could affect radiosensitivity. Thus, normal human dermal fibroblasts (NHDF) cells were exposed to C-ion beams at Gunma University (10-80 keV/micrometer) and TIARA (108 and 158 keV/micrometer). The surviving fractions were analyzed with colony formation assays. The experimental RBE (eRBE) values were estimated from the radiation dose survival curve fitted by LQ model, and defined ${it in vitro}$.

Advanced research on hydrogen-metal interactions of hydrogen storage materials using synchrotron radiation X-rays

Machida, Akihiko; Saito, Hiroyuki; Matsumura, Daiju; Takeda, Yukiharu

Materia, 52(7), p.337 - 341, 2013/07

We have investigated the structural and electronic properties of the hydrides or hydrogen storage materials focusing on the hydrogen-metal interactions using synchrotron radiation X-rays. X-rays interact with electrons of atoms in materials, hence, we can use X-rays as one of the powerful probes for investigating the chemical bonding states. The hydrogen-metal interactions give us the important knowledge to develop the high performance hydrogen storage materials. In this paper, we present the recent results of our studies for the hydrogen storage materials. By using our measurement apparatuses and also using our developed techniques, we obtained the new knowledge of structural and electronic properties of hydrides and hydrogen storage materials.

Frequent corrections of the magnetic field of the JAERI AVF cyclotron were required for keeping a beam current constant during long time operation. We observed correlation between the magnetic field and the temperature of the cyclotron magnet yoke by measuring the magnetic field with an NMR probe and the temperature with platinum resistance thermometers. The unstable phenomenon of a cyclotron beam was induced by temperature change in the magnet yoke caused mainly by thermal conduction from the main coil. To restrain the thermal conduction to the yoke, we have inserted temperature controlled copper plates between the yoke and the main coil. In addition, a temperature control system of the cooling water of the trim coils has been installed independent of the total cooling system for controlling the pole tip temperature. An optimum condition of the temperature control systems for stabilizing the magnetic field has been investigated.

The AVF cyclotron system at JAERI Takasaki has been smoothly operated without serious troubles since the first beam extraction in March, 1991. A yearly operation time is about 3200 hours on an average for recent eight years. In last two years, we performed some improvements and developments as followings: stabilization of the cyclotron beam by addition on an exclusive cooling system, designing and investigation of the flat-top system using fifth-harmonic RF, reconstruction of the rotary shutter for radiation shielding and reinforcement of the magnetic channel and its power supply. Furthermore, the renewal of main circulation pump for cooling system, replacement of shunt resistor in the power supplies and re-alignment of the several magnets along the trunk beam transport line were also carried out.

Clinical RBE (cRBE), which was used to decide a clinical dose of carbon ion radiotherapy, is calculated by multiply experimental RBE (eRBE) by scaling factor. A value of eRBE was measured by colony formation assay of HSG cells in past, and adopted to the therapy of all patients and organ. However, there are question whether it was proper to use conventional eRBE in a different organization, different cell type. Therefore, we irradiated X-rays or a carbon line to NHDF cell and performed a colony assay to determine RBE of different cell type. The value of RBE was calculated from the cell survival rate fit in LQ model. As a result, the value of RBE was increased in LET-dependent manner, and the RBE obtained from the NHDF cell exhibited higher value than that of HSG cells. Thus, we concluded that it might be necessary to change scaling factor when evaluate different organ.
