Tc extraction and separation experiments were performed basing on PUREX technique with using spent UO fuel with burn-up of 44 GWd/t. The experimental results were examined with performing calculations by a simulation code ESSCAR (Extraction System Simulation Code for Advanced Reprocessing). It was demonstrated that Tc can be almost quantitatively extracted from a dissolver solution and that Tc can also be almost quantitatively recovered by scrubbing. Further, it was clearly presented from the calculation results of ESSCAR that the extraction mechanism of Tc is dominated by the synergistic effect of Zr and U.

This paper reviews the succeeding development and utilization of Extraction System Simulation Code for Advanced Reprocessing (ESSCAR). From the viewpoint of development, more tests with spent fuel and calculations should be performed with better understanding of the physico-chemical phenomena in a separation process. From the viewpoint of process safety research on fuel cycle facilities, it is important to know the process behavior of a key substance; being highly reactive but existing only trace amount.

Micro PIXE, which is installed in a single end accelerator in JAERI, was used for quantitative analysis of boron and gadolinium distribution in a cell level. The micro beam of 1 m diameter is possible to observe the distribution. In the adjustment procedure of the sample, first is a fix of mylar film by using a glass ring and a bite ring of 2cm diameter. Next the 9L cells were scattered on the washed film, and is cultivated on 37C in medium until they form the mono-layer. After the Gd-BOPTA was added, it incubates for the 24-72 hour on 37C. The film is washed in the THAM liquid, and is directly put on liquid nitrogen. A vacuum drying for 24 hours is conducted in order to fix a film on holder. It is important to uniformly fix the cell in distribution analysis in the cell using Micro PIXE. In recent result, it became possible that the distribution of P, S, Gd, etc. was analyzed. But we could not distinguish whether K and Gd exist in the cell or whether it exists around the cell. It was indicated that these elements was leaked by the reason of cell breaking or other on the cytoplasm.

Experimental studies and numerical analysis on physical and chemical behavior of actinide elements in the solutions of aqueous reprocessing process have been done for compiling technical data that are necessary for evaluating processes such as reprocessing facilities. The objective of the present study is obtaining technical data that are conductive to the construction of reprocessing process that cope with high burn-up nuclear fuel, the evaluation of nuclear fuel cycle, and the drawing up policy on reprocessing.

In JAERI, PARC process based on PUREX technique has been studied to as the basis of future reprocessing. The key of concept is to obtain the products, U and Pu, within only a single extraction cycle by separating Np and Tc from U and Pu before U/Pu partition. Two flow-sheet tests on the process were performed with 44 GWd/t PWR spent-fuel solutions. It was demonstrated that remaining Np in raffinate from co-extraction could be decreased to 13 % compared to the dissolver solution with increased solvent flow rate and with increased nitric acid concentration of FP scrubbing solution. It was demonstrated that Np separation (selective reduction by n-butyraldehyde) efficiency could be improved from 36 % to 78 % by flow-sheet modification; increasing reductant concentration and scrubbing solution flow rate. The feasibility of the Tc separation technique by high acid scrubbing was demonstrated.

This report investigates the effect of heat transfer due to contact with measurement terminals on the measurement results of thermoelectric material properties using heat transfer simulation. In thermoelectric conversion technology, miniaturization and thinning of elements are being studied for their compatibility with compact power supplies for the IoT, etc. In order to achieve this, it is necessary to accurately measure thermoelectric properties of minute materials, and it is essential to evaluate the results in the entire measurement system.

We have been developing new thermoelectric materials from soil clay minerals treated by molten salt electrolysis, and have been evaluating their basic properties. In this study, we report the results of the measurement of thermal conductivity of soil clay minerals, which is essential for the determination of thermoelectric performance index.
