A highly practical diamide-type extractant, which is an alkyl diamide amine with 2-ethylhexyl alkyl chains (ADAAM(EH)), was investigated for mutual separation of Am(III) and Cm(III). ADAAM(EH) is a multidentate ligand with one soft N-donor atom and two hard O-donor atoms in its central frame. This tridentate arrangement of donor atoms provides selective binding to Am(III) compared to that with Cm(III) in highly acidic media, resulting in separation factors of up to 5.5. A continuous liquid-liquid extraction and stripping test was conducted using a multistage countercurrent mixer-settler extractor with ADAAM(EH) in n-dodecane. In this test, separation of Am(III) and Cm(III) was achieved with very high yield.

An impeccable, high-performance new reagent called alkyl diamide amine (ADAAM) was examined from the viewpoint of mutual separation of Am(III) and Eu(III). ADAAM has three donor atoms, one soft N-donor atom and two hard O-donor atoms, in the central frame. The combination of soft and hard atoms affords a tridentate donor set of atoms that ensures remarkable extractability and selectivity of Am(III) and Eu(III) in highly acidic media.

${it N,N,N',N'}$-(tetrakis-2-pyridylmethyl)ethylenediamine (TPEN) derivatives bearing a polymerizable double bond in the substituent structure of the pyridine ring are synthesized and subjected to copolymerization with ${it N}$-isopropylacrylamide in the presence of AIBN. The obtained poly(TPEN-NIPA) gels show thermo-responsive swelling/shrinking behaviors and are employed for the extraction of cadmium(II) ion from the aqueous solution to examine the relationship of the gel characteristics and the extraction performance. The polymer gels composed of the TPEN derivative bearing C3, C4, C10 and branched C3 spacer chains are synthesized and temperature-dependent extraction behavior of cadmium ion is compared. These gels extract Cd(II) ion efficiently from the aqueous solution in the swelling state at 5$$^{circ}$$C, while little extraction is observed at 45$$^{circ}$$C with shrinking. It is found that poly(TPEN-NIPA) gel of branched C3 spacer (C3b) shows the excellent thermoresponsive extraction performance.

N,N,N',N'-(tetrakis-2-pyridylmethyl)ethylenediamine (TPEN) derivatives bearing the different number (1-4) of a double bond moiety on the pyridine ring are synthesized and subjected to copolymerization with N-isopropylacrylamide in the presence of AIBN. The obtained poly(TPEN-NIPA)gels show thermo-responsive swelling/shrinking behaviors and are employed for the extraction of cadmium(II) ion from the aqueous solution to examine the relationship of the gel characteristics and the extraction performance. The polymer gels composed of the TPEN derivative bearing three or four double bonds exhibit temperature-dependent change of swelling and shrinking in water. These gels extract CdII ion efficiently from the aqueous solution in the swelling state at 5$$^{circ}$$C, while little extraction was observed at 45$$^{circ}$$C with shrinking.

The neutron zooming tube has been developed using electronic zooming TV readout system for an X-ray microscope. This system consists of the photocathode, the electro-magnetic coil assembly and the CCD TV camera etc.. The photocathode consists of transmission type CsI layer in combination with neutron converters such as Gd foil. The system position sensitive resolution of 20$$mu$$m has been obtained using neutron converter. We have found that it is determined from the distance between the CsI layer and the neutron converter, then the limiting resolution could be improved.

Separation of minor actinides (MAs) from lanthanides in high-level radioactive waste (HLW) becomes important in nuclear power generation. Although TPEN is a possible candidate for the practical separating agent for MAs from HLW, there still remains difficulties in high water solubility and easy protonation characteristics. The practical MA separation is conducted from a mixture of MAs and Ln(III) in a highly acidic aqueous solution, thereby a hydrophobic and acid tolerant chelating agent needs to be developed. We herein report efficient syntheses of TPEN derivatives bearing various hydrophobic side-chains, which are alkyloxy and fluorinated alkoxy groups, and solvent extraction of Am(III) from Eu(III) in nitric acid aqueous solution. Synthesized TPEN derivatives were hydrophobic and showed higher performance than unsubstituted TPEN for Am separation from Eu in extraction with water/organic solvents at low pH region.

Clinical RBE (cRBE), which was used to decide a clinical dose of carbon ion radiotherapy, is calculated by multiply experimental RBE (eRBE) by scaling factor. A value of eRBE was measured by colony formation assay of HSG cells in past, and adopted to the therapy of all patients and organ. However, there are question whether it was proper to use conventional eRBE in a different organization, different cell type. Therefore, we irradiated X-rays or a carbon line to NHDF cell and performed a colony assay to determine RBE of different cell type. The value of RBE was calculated from the cell survival rate fit in LQ model. As a result, the value of RBE was increased in LET-dependent manner, and the RBE obtained from the NHDF cell exhibited higher value than that of HSG cells. Thus, we concluded that it might be necessary to change scaling factor when evaluate different organ.

no journal, ,

JAEA continues to carry out the development of the ADS(Double-strata). Mutual separation of MA and Ln is important for the development of the partitioning process. The separation is particularly difficult, because they have the analogous chemical behavior. New reagent was synthesized and examined. The results of separation factors (SF) of Am against Eu are more than 25. The reagent is very stable chemically, high extraction capacity, fully miscible with hydrocarbon diluents, fast chemical kinetics, and following the CHON-principle.

JAEA continues to carry out the development of the ADS (Double-strata). Mutual separation of MA and Ln is important for the development of the partitioning process. TDdDGA was performed using a mixer-settler equipment for the development of the separation process for MA. TDdDGA has a high extraction capacity. TDdDGA consists of C, H, O and N atoms (the CHON-principle). In this experiment, the feed solution as simulated HLLW contained fourteen elements. The results of the counter-current test showed that Am was extracted and was recovered in a high yield.

Recently, we found that photo-induced particle formation of Pd$$^{2+}$$ was promoted by coexistence of molybdenum anion in aqueous solution. In this study, we performed in-situ time-resolved XAFS measurement in the photoreduction of Pd$$^{2+}$$ in presence of various concentration of molybdenum anion. The effect of molybdenum addition on photo-induced particle formation of Pd will be discussed based on the relationship between the photoreduction rate of Pd$$^{2+}$$ and the concentration of molybdenum anion.
