This report covers the activities of the experimental fast reactor JOYO from April 1985 to March 1986. After completion of the 7th duty cycle operation at the end of March 1985, special operation was carried out for the in-vessel performance test of the failed fuel detection and location system(FFDL)by ir-radiating slitted pins, natural circulation test from 30 MWt, and in-core measure-ment of coolant flow rate of each core subassembly during April 1985. The 5th annual inspection was carried out from the end of April 1985 to the beginning of December 1985, including disassembly and inspection of the double rotating plugs. Works for modification of the plant were done on such system as the control panel of the reactor protection system in order to enable inspection of the scram circuit during reactor operation, exchange of the cool-ing towers for the auxiliary service system and ventillation system, liquid waste processing system, and replacement of one of the in-vessel sodium level

Fifteen years passed since the foundation of PNC, and the organization of the Fast Breeder Reactor Development Project was changed in 1982. In this chance, it is considered that the results of the research axid development (R&D) of the FBR project should be summarized. The sturctural materials of the experimental fast reactor, "JOYO", must maintain sufficient mechanical strength during the entire reactor plant lifetime. In JOYO, the material surveillance for reactor structureal components, safety vessel, primary cooling system piping, secondary cooling system piping and tank have been planned to confirem the design integrity of these structures. The material surveillance speciments have been loaded in the reactor plant and they will be periodically taken out and examined during plant life to monitor any changes in mechanical properites. This report summarizes the material surveillance program of JOYO.

The preliminary design of experimental fast reactor JOYO was started in 1965. After thid design, three steps of conceptual designs are carried out, and main parameters were fixed during these steps. This paper describes the operatin experiences which contain functional test beore criticality, initial criticality and low power testing, power ascension tests to 50 MWt operation, power ascension tests to 75 MWt and 75 MWt operation.

A Tow dimensional finite element diffusion code "DIFEM"

A computer code ; "DIFEM" has been developed for solving neutron diffusion problem with a Finite Element Method, which has the following advantage points as conpared with the Finite Difference Method : (1)to perform a calculation with any mesh size in arbitrary regions (2)to treat any geometry. DIFEM code is programmed to treat two dimensional (RZ, XY, RO, Triangle) eigenvalue problems and to use the variable dimension to minimize the allocated memoty. A auto-mesh routine, plotting routine option and restart option are involved in the computor code to make mesh data and to save computing time. Input data should be written with "FIDO" format. Programs are written in "FORTRAN Ⅳ" language. The code description, and the input/output instruction will be stated in this report.
