JNC TN7430 2005-002, 65 Pages, 2005/02

JNC-TN7430-2005-002.pdf:73.33MB

The Regional HydrogeologicaI Study (RHS) Project, which commenced in 1992, has been performed in the 10km-square area. It was intended for the development of an understanding of the geological environment at the regional and local area. The DH-15 borehole was drilled to develop the techniques of evaluations for the fracture zones whose presence have been observed by previous surveys around the MIU Construction Site. This advance report summarized to familiar the results of borehole investigations to person interested and to evaluate preliminary issues. Interpretations and conclusions described in this report will be revised depending on the progress of analytical works.

The RegionaI Hydrogeological Study (RHS) Project, which commenced in 1992, has been performed in the 10km-square area. It was intended for the development of an understanding of the geological environment at the regional and local scale. The DH-14 borehole was drilled to develop the techniques of evaluations for the large-scale lineaments whose presence have been observed in the northeast region of Regional Hydrogeological Study project. This advance report summarized to familiar the results of borehole investigations to person interested and to evaluate preliminary issues. The application of neutron reflectometry to study dynamic phenomena at surface and interfaces have been restricted so far. It was mainly due to the low intensity of neutron sources, but now high-intensity spallation neutron sources are under construction in Japan (J-PARC) and U.S. (SNS). We have a plan to install a spin-echo option on the J-PARC neutron reflectometer with horizontal sample geometry for studies on dynamics of surfaces and interfaces. This option is based on the resonance spin-echo method and aimed at dynamics upto hundreds of nanoseconds. In this contribution, the plan and status of development are introduced together with the principle and characteristics of this option.

Neutron reflectometry; The Principle and the instrumentation

Takeda, Masayasu; Matsuoka, Hideki*

no journal, ,

X-ray and neutron reflectometries have been now widely used to determine the depth profile of thin films and artificial multilayers. These two techniques give similar information on the internal layered structures. Both probes, X-ray and neutron, are complementary to each other because X-ray sees the electron cloud around nuclei, while neutron sees the nuclei themselves. Therefore the complement-ary use of both X-ray and neutron reflectometries is very useful and sometimes necessary. In this talk we proposed a new instrument in which several probes such as neutron, X-ray, visible light and so on are used at the same time for the structural analysis of an identical specimen. The base of the instrument is supposed to be a new neutron reflectometer installed at MLF in J-PARC. Brief introduction of the neutron reflectometry and a neutron reflectometer, SUIREN, installed at JRR-3 of Japan Atomic Energy Agency is given.
