Topotactic reaction of the Ruddlesden-Popper phase Sr$$_{3}$$Fe$$_{2}$$O$$_{7-delta}$$ ($$delta$$ $${approx}$$ 0.18) with polytetrafluoroethylene yields a highly fluorinated phase Sr$$_{3}$$Fe$$_{2}$$O$$_{5+x}$$F$$_{2-x}$$ (x $${approx}$$ 0.44), compared with Sr$$_{3}$$Fe$$_{2}$$O$$_{6}$$F$$_{0.87}$$ prepared by the reaction of Sr$$_{3}$$Fe$$_{2}$$O$$_{6}$$ and F$$_{2}$$ gas. Structure analyses based on powder neutron diffraction, synchrotron powder diffraction, and $$^{57}$$Fe M$"o$ssbauer spectroscopy measurements demonstrate that the new oxyfluoride perovskite has no anion deficiencies and adopts the tetragonal structure (space group ${it I}$4/${it mmm}$) with lattice constants ${it a}$ = 3.87264(6) ${AA}$ and ${it c}$ = 21.3465(6) ${AA}$ at room temperature. The fluoride ions preferentially occupy the terminal apical anion sites with oxide ions in a disordered manner, which results in square pyramidal coordination around iron.

The thermal expansion and crystal structure of A-type carbonate apatite with the monoclinic symmetry was investigated using the neutron powder diffraction at room temperature, 200, 300, 400 and 500$$^{circ}$$C. The ${it a}$-axis and ${it c}$-axis lattice parameters were 0.9568 and 0.6868 nm at room temperature, and those were linearly increased with the increase of temperature. It was found that the linear thermal expansion coefficient of ${it a}$-axis was 1.31$$times$$10$$^{-5}$$/$$^{circ}$$C and ${it c}$-axis 8.07$$times$$10$$^{-6}$$/$$^{circ}$$C.

Crystal structure of high purity type A carbonate apatite

Tonegawa, Toru*; Ikoma, Toshiyuki*; Suetsugu, Yasushi*; Igawa, Naoki; Matsushita, Yoshitaka*; Yoshioka, Tomohiko*; Hanagata, Nobutaka*; Tanaka, Junzo*

Proceedings of 22nd International Symposium on Ceramics in Medicine (BIOCERAMICS-22), p.93 - 96, 2009/12

Hydroxyapatite is the main inorganic component of bone and tooth minerals, in which CO$$_{3}$$ ions partially substitute for OH and/or PO$$_{4}$$ ions. In this study, high purity type A carbonate apatite, Ca$$_{9.89}$$(PO$$_{4}$$)$$_{5.99}$$(CO$$_{3}$$)$$_{0.90}$$ powder completely substituted by carbonate ions were synthesized by a treatment of low crystalline hydroxyapatite powder, Ca$$_{9.89}$$(PO$$_{4}$$)$$_{5.99}$$(OH)$$_{1.80}$$) in a dry CO$$_{2}$$ flow at 1000 $$^{circ}$$C. The crystal structure of the sample was the monoclinic symmetry with space group of ${it Pb}$ and the lattice parameters, ${it a}$ = 0.9566 (1), ${it b}$ = 1.9063 (2), ${it c}$ = 0.6867 (1) nm and $$gamma$$ =119.84 (1)$$^{circ}$$, which was refined by a Rietveld method with neutron diffraction data.

Powder neutron diffraction of La-apatite under low temperature

Matsushita, Yoshitaka*; Izumi, Fujio*; Kobayashi, Kiyoshi*; Igawa, Naoki; Kitazawa, Hideaki*; Oyama, Yukiko*; Miyoshi, Shogo*; Yamaguchi, Shu*

Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research A, 600(1), p.319 - 321, 2009/02

 Times Cited Count:22 Percentile:80.43(Instruments & Instrumentation)

The neutron powder diffraction data of the apatite-type La-silicate La$$_{9.5}$$Si$$_{6}$$O$$_{26.25}$$ was measured at 10 K and the Rietveld refinement on the basis of hexagonal P6$$_{3}$$/m was successfully carried out. The obtained cell parameters were ${it a}$ =0.971297(7) nm, and ${it c}$ = 0.717950(6) nm. On the Rietveld refinement supported by maximum entropy method, the interstitial oxygen positions show randomly distribution around La2 site, and they may give the driving-force of high ionic conductivity to the main ionic conduction site O4.

Water-based sol-gel synthesis and crystal structure refinement of lanthanum silicate apatite

Kobayashi, Kiyoshi*; Matsushita, Yoshitaka*; Igawa, Naoki; Izumi, Fujio*; Nishimura, Chikashi*; Miyoshi, Shogo*; Oyama, Yukiko*; Yamaguchi, Shu*

Solid State Ionics, 179(38), p.2209 - 2215, 2008/11

 Times Cited Count:24 Percentile:67.78(Chemistry, Physical)

A novel synthesis method of lanthanum silicate apatite was developed by a sol-gel method using an aqueous solution system. The processes of apatite phase formation were investigated by XRD and TG-DTA. Lanthanum dioxide carbonate was found in the sample below 873 K and lanthanum silicate apatite was formed above 1073 K. It was founded that the profiles of powder XRD and neutron diffraction could be refined by the oxy-apatite structure with the space group ${it P}$6$$_{3}$$/${it m}$.

An analytical method which consists of two-dimensional thermal-hydraulic analysis and three-dimensional structural analysis has been proposed to evaluate the integrity of a calandria tube in the case of pressure tube rupture in a pressure tube type reactor. In order to validate the method, experiments were carried out with coaxially arranged double tubes simulating a pressure tube and a calandria tube. Experimental data were also comparedwith analytical results with the proposed method.

Conduction properties of oxide ions and crystal structure refinement of La$$_{9.50}$$(SiO$$_{4}$$)$$_{6}$$O$$_{2.25}$$ have been made by A.C.-impedance, electro-motive force of oxygen concentration cell, X-ray and neutron diffraction methods using the sample fabricated by the sol-gel method. The crystal structure of the sample can be refined by structural model with ${it P}$6$$_{3}$$/${it m}$ space group. Oxide ion conductivity is found to be predominant in wide oxygen partial pressure and temperature range based on the conductivity and electro-motive force measurements.

Topotactic synthesis and crystal structure of a fluorinated layered iron oxyfluoride

Tsujimoto, Yoshihiro*; Yamaura, Kazunari*; Matsushita, Yoshitaka*; Muromachi, Eiji*; Hayashi, Naoaki*; Kodama, Katsuaki; Igawa, Naoki; Shirako, Yuichi*; Akaogi, Masaki*

Topotactic reaction of the n = 2 Ruddlesden-Popper phase Sr$$_{3}$$Fe$$_{2}$$O$$_{7-delta}$$ with the Teflon polymer yields a highly fluorinated phase Sr$$_{3}$$Fe$$_{2}$$O$$_{5+x}$$O$$_{2-x}$$ (x $$sim$$ 0.44). The crystal/magnetic structures and anion composition are determined by a combination of neutron diffraction and $$^{57}$$Fe M$"o$ssbauer spectroscopy experiments. Fluoride anions selectively occupy the terminal apical anion sites, leading to the square pyramidal coordination around the Fe metal center. The oxyfluoride material adopts a simple antiferromagnetic ordered structure with k = (1/2 1/2 0) below 390 K.
