The position dependence of the scattered intensity in the time-of-flight backscattering spectrometer DNA was investigated. A periodic structure for both vertical (pixel) and horizontal (PSD) directions was observed. The solar slit and over-bending of an analyzer crystal is discussed as a possible origin of the modulation in the intensity. We have developed software program for the systematic correction of the position-dependent intensity and offset energy for the elastic peak. This corrects the deviation from the true scattering intensity and improve the quality of the data, which includes the energy resolution.

A vertical movement type of sample changer for the neutron spectrometer BL02, J-PARC MLF was developed for our top-loading type cryostat. The sample changer, termed as "PEACE", can control reproducibility of the irradiated position using guides made of polyether ether ketone. The variation between the background scattering profiles of three sample positions was found to be less than plus minus 1.6%. This result is reasonable, considering the deviation of sample position of less than plus minus 0.3 mm from the vertical axis.

Ultralow energy magnon in yttrium iron garnet crystal has been studied by inelastic neutron scattering in an energy range from 10 to 45 $$mu$$eV. When a magnetic field of about 0.1 T is applied along [111], ultralow energy magnon anomaly is found at 10 K.

The joint user meeting for the neutron spectrometers in the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) at J-PARC, "DIRECTION 2018", was held jointly by J-PARC MLF, KEK-IMSS, and CROSS. This meeting was purposed to encourage users' activities and collaborations between users and instruments on six beamlines BL01 (4SEASONS), BL02 (DNA), BL06 (VIN ROSE), BL12 (HRC), BL14 (AMATERAS), and BL23 (POLANO). In this meeting, 14 talks and 21 posters were presented, which reported recent research activities using the instruments, and the current status of the instruments and sample environments. This report compiles the presentation materials and their abstracts.

Nuclear and magnetic structure and full magnon dispersions of yttrium iron garnet Y$$_3$$Fe$$_5$$O$$_{12}$$ have been studied by neutron scattering. The lowest-energy dispersion below 14 meV exhibits a quadratic dispersion as expected from ferromagnetic magnons. The imaginary part of $$q$$-integrated dynamical spin susceptibility $$chi$$"($$E$$) exhibits a square-root energy-dependence in the low energies. The magnon density of state is estimated from the $$chi$$"($$E$$) obtained on an absolute scale. The value is consistent with a single chirality mode for the magnon branch expected theoretically.

The phase diagram and the relationship between the crystal coherence length and electrical response of Pb[(Mg$$_{1/3}$$Nb$$_{2/3}$$)$$_{1-x}$$Ti$$_{x}$$]O$$_{3}$$ (PMN-xPT) near the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) have been precisely investigated using a single crystal with a Ti composition gradient by synchrotron X-ray diffraction and inelastic light scattering at room temperature. The crystal has two boundaries at Ti compositions of 29.0 mol% and 34.7 mol% which correspond to the phase boundaries between the monoclinic B (MB) and C (MC) phases and between the MC and tetragonal (T) phases, respectively. It is shown that there is a strong negative correlation between the electrical response and the crystal coherence length at the sub-$$mu$$m scale. The results are explained by the size effects of domains near the MPB.

Neutron-scattering studies of (Bi$$_{1/2}$$Na$$_{1/2}$$)TiO$$_{3}$$ (BNT) have been performed to elucidate the microscopic mechanism of the broad maximum in the temperature dependence of the dielectric constant at Tm $$sim$$ 600 K and the reduction in the piezoelectric properties above the depolarization temperature, 460 $$sim$$ 480 K. We observed diffuse scattering near the $$Gamma$$ point below 700 K, which competes with the superlattice peak at the M point of the tetragonal phase but coexists with the superlattice peak at the R point of the rhombohedral phase. The diffuse scattering shows an anisotropic Q shape extending along the $$<$$100$$>$$ direction transverse to the scattering vector Q, which is explained by atomic shifts bridging the tetragonal and rhombohedral structures. We propose that the broad maximum in the dielectric constant is associated with a diffusive first-order transition between the competing tetragonal and rhombohedral phases. In addition, we found that the diffuse scattering is reduced for single crystals grown under high oxygen pressure, which suggests an analogy with the central peak in hydrogen-reduced SrTiO$$_{3}$$. Inelastic neutron scattering near the $$Gamma$$ point reveals a heavily overdamped soft mode similar to those reported in lead-based relaxors, the "waterfall" feature. Moreover, a damped soft transverse acoustic mode is observed for the $$<$$100$$>$$ direction as the anisotropic diffuse scattering, indicating phase instabilities with the same origin as that of the diffuse scattering. The recovery of the soft mode is observed near the depolarization temperature, which coincides with the disappearance of the superlattice peak at the M point. These results indicate that the depolarization and the waterfall feature originate in the dynamic nature of ferroelectric clusters in the coexisting tetragonal/rhombohedral phase.

Environmental radiation monitoring around the Tokai Reprocessing Plant has been conducted by the Nuclear Fuel Cycle Engineering Laboratories, based on "Safety Regulations for the Reprocessing Plant of JAEA, Chapter IV; Environmental monitoring" and Environmental Radiation Monitoring Program decided by the Ibaraki prefectural government. The radiation monitoring installations and equipments were also prepared for emergency. This manual describes; (1) the installations of radiological measurement, (2) the installations of meteorological observation, and (3) environmental data processing system for executing the terrestrial environmental monitoring by Environmental Protection Section, Radiation Protection Department. The environmental monitoring has been operated through the manual published in 1993 (PNC TN8520 93-001). Then the whole articles were revised because the partially of installations and equipments having been updated in recent years.
