The Horonobe URL Project has being pursued by JAEA to enhance the reliability of relevant disposal technologies through investigations of the deep geological environment within the host sedimentary formation at Horonobe, northern Hokkaido. The in-situ experiment for performance confirmation of engineered barrier system (EBS experiment) had been prepared from 2013 to 2014 fiscal year at G.L.-350m gallery, and heating by electric heater in simulated overpack had started in January, 2015. One of objectives of the experiment is acquiring data concerned with Thermal -Hydrological - Mechanical - Chemical coupled behavior. These data will be used in order to confirm the performance of engineered barrier system. In this report, It is summarized the production of casing drilling machine for large diameter, simulated overpack, buffer material blocks and backfilling material for EBS experiment.

Various engineers from different generations concern with geological disposal project of high-level radioactive waste (HLW) over time. It requires to manage information to ensure the traceability of the decision making process and the inheritance of technique involved in project management. We developed Expert system available on the web to manage inheritable knowledge related to procedure, know-how and the notice of investigation techniques for deep geological environment. This report provides an overview of expert system and the one of contents regarding hydrochemical modeling and the updating method in literature survey stage $$sim$$ detail investigation stage of geological disposal project.

This study will be demonstrated the selection process for the URL area and URL site in sequence. Horonobe URL has been declared to be constructed within whole Horonobe Town to be selected early in the fiscal year 2002. The Horonobe URL area/site is required existence of host argillaceous sedimentary formations and saline groundwater. Further fundamental requirements are rock mechanical property and underground flammable (e.g. methane) gas content which meet with safe construction and operation of underground facility. Next, based on surveys of existing information and aerial and ground reconnaissance surveys on a regional scale, and taking into consideration preliminary requirements on the geological environment and safety, as well as social and environmental constraints, an area of 3 km $$times$$ 3 km in the north-central part of Horonobe Town was selected as the main area for the surface-based investigations (URL area). A site for constructing the underground and surface facilities (URL site) was subsequently selected in the URL area, 3 km from the center of Horonobe Town. The selection was based on social conditions and the availability of infrastructure, including roads and land use restrictions, in addition to available geological and hydrogeological information. This study is only fruit of selecting the URL site based on the social and technical requirements in Japan. These stepwise approaches and experiences for selecting the site are applicable when the implementer (e.g. Nuclear Waste Management Organization of Japan) will select the site such as the phase of literature survey, preliminary investigation and detailed investigation in the future.

Unusual cooling of the Middle Miocene Ichifusayama Granodiorite, Kyushu, Japan

The authors report biotite K-Ar, zircon FT, and apatite FT ages from four sites in the Ichifusayama Granodiorite in the Outer Zone acidic rocks of Southwest Japan, Southern Kyushu. All the K-Ar ages and FT ages are concentrated on 13-10Ma. The difference in the apatite FT ages was caused by an influence of paleotopography such as a deep valley. The rapid cooling of the granodiorite in ca. 13 Ma occurred by uplift throughout the Outer Zone of Southwest Japan in Kyushu. It is considered that obduction to the Philippine Sea Plate of the Outer Zone of Kyushu also occurred in ca. 13 Ma. Cooling history of granitic rocks in Kashiwazima district, western Shikoku

K-Ar and FT analyses were carried out on biotite, zircon and apatite from the granitic rocks in Kashiwazima district, western Shikoku in order to reveal the cooling history. These ages suggest rapid cooling of the granitic rocks in the temperature range to 100$$^{circ}$$C from 300$$^{circ}$$C in 14-13Ma.

Procedure for estimation of salinity distribution based on resistivity data of rock mass

This study is aimed to develop the methodology for estimation salinity distribution based on the resistivity logging along sub-surfaced boreholes drilled around Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory in Hokkaido, northern Japan. In addition, the technical knowledge and know-how learnt through this study were picked up for the development of Knowledge Management System. As the result, the procedure to estimate the salinity of groundwater is summarized as follows; (1) Discussion about the advisability of using the data of resistivity logging, (2) Conversion the resistivity data to salinity based on the math formula shown in previous studies, (3) Comparison between chemical analysis result and calculated result. The technical knowledge and know-how are accumulated during this study as follows; Calculated salinity based on deep induction data agrees well with analysis result, it is important that the resistivity between rocks and groundwater should be different in several classes.
