Proposal for quality assessment method of groundwater chemistry for hydrochemical investigation

Mizuno, Takashi; Metcalfe, R.*; Iwatsuki, Teruki; Mie, Hideki*

Chikasui Gakkai-Shi, 49(2), p.139 - 152, 2007/05

Hydrochemical studies are generally conducted based on chemical data of groundwater samples. Various methodologies exist for obtaining samples and for assessing the quality of the collected sample. This study is aimed at establishing a methodology for quality assessment of chemical data obtained from groundwater samples using a method known as Evidence Support Logic. In this study, pH data of groundwater obtained from several boreholes were assessed using this method. The results showed that 23 out of 63 samples satisfied the applied quality criteria. When plotted, the data from the 23 samples show a constant value from top to bottom of investigation area when compared to a plot using data from all samples. These results indicate that the quality assessment method demonstrated by this study is applicable to groundwater studies and that by considering the sample quality it will be possible to develop a clearer interpretation of the deep underground geochemical environment.

The DH-15 Borehole Investigations in the Regional Hydrogeological Study Project

Tsuruta, Tadahiko; Fujita, Yuji; Abumi, Kensho; Mie, Hideki; Fujishiro, Hideyuki

JNC TN7400 2005-025, 82 Pages, 2005/08

JNC-TN7400-2005-025.pdf:8.63MB

The DH-15 borehole investigations were carried out to develop and apply a variety of geoscientific techniques for the geological and hydrogeological characterization of water conducting features and the rock mass. The main investigations performed were : Measurement of geochemical parameters of the drilling fluid and the return water, Coring, core logging and photographing of core, Borehole television observation, Geophysical logging, Fluid logging, Multi-offset VSP survey, Hydraulic tests, Measurement of geochemical parameters of the pumping water, and Installation of a long-term groundwater monitoring system. This report describes the results of the DH-15 borehole investigations with respect to the above results.

The Regional HydrogeologicaI Study (RHS) Project, which commenced in 1992, has been performed in the 10km-square area. It was intended for the development of an understanding of the geological environment at the regional and local area. The DH-15 borehole was drilled to develop the techniques of evaluations for the fracture zones whose presence have been observed by previous surveys around the MIU Construction Site. This advance report summarized to familiar the results of borehole investigations to person interested and to evaluate preliminary issues. Interpretations and conclusions described in this report will be revised depending on the progress of analytical works.

The RegionaI Hydrogeological Study (RHS) Project, which commenced in 1992, has been performed in the 10km-square area. It was intended for the development of an understanding of the geological environment at the regional and local scale. The DH-14 borehole was drilled to develop the techniques of evaluations for the large-scale lineaments whose presence have been observed in the northeast region of Regional Hydrogeological Study project. This advance report summarized to familiar the results of borehole investigations to person interested and to evaluate preliminary issues. Interpretations and conclusions described in this report will be revised depending on the progress of analytical works.

Hydrochemical changes of groundwater around Mizunami underground research laboratory

Iwatsuki, Teruki; Amano, Yuki; Mie, Hideki

no journal, ,

Hydrochemical changes of groundwater have been observed around the shaft of Mizunami underground research laboratory. Water pressure, pH, and concentrations of calcium, sulphate and bicarbonate ions in groundwater changed in response to shafts sinking. Hydrochemical disturbance seems to reach within the range of surrounding shaft tens of m.
