Impact of ferrous iron dosing on iron and phosphorus solids speciation and transformation in a pilot scale membrane bioreactor

In this study, the distributions of iron and phosphorus species in a 1.25 m$$^{3}$$ pilot scale submerged membrane bioreactor dosed with Fe(II) salts to either the membrane chamber or the 1st anoxic chamber were determined using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at the iron and phosphorus K-edges. Significant differences in the distribution of Fe species were evident at the commencement of dosing depending on the chamber to which Fe(II) was dosed though these differences were much less distinct by the time steady state conditions were achieved. Both the co-precipitation of P with Fe and adsorption of phosphorus to iron oxides play important roles with regard to the removal of phosphorus from the MBR supernatant with the results of this work suggesting that P removal via formation of Fe(III)-phosphate mineral species is preferred if Fe(II) is dosed to the membrane chamber rather than the 1st anoxic chamber.

In order to investigate accumulation process of iodine-129 ($$^{129}$$I) in a contaminated F-Area groundwater plume of the US Savannah River Site, soil resuspension experiments simulating surface runoff and erosion events were conducted. Results showed that 72$$sim$$77% of the newly-introduced iodide was irreversibly sequestered into the organic-rich soil, while the rest was transformed into colloidal and dissolved organo-iodine by the soil. Laboratory iodination of the soil indicated a preferential incorporation of inorganic iodine into soil organic matter (SOM) at acidic pH (3$$sim$$4), except for the iodination catalyzed by lactoperoxidase, which favors more alkaline conditions. From this result, we concluded that under very acidic conditions, abiotic iodination of SOM was predominant, while under less acidic conditions (pH $$geq$$5), microbial enzymatically-assisted iodination took over.

In order to understand the effect of soil organic matter (SOM) on the mobility of iodine in the vicinity of the F-area seepage basin at the U.S. Department Energy's Savannah River Site (SRS), relationships between radioiodine/iodine concentration and properties of SOM (e.g., degree of humification, aromaticity, and molecular weight) were examined. Analyses were carried out for four sequential extracts of SOM (freshwater, alkaline, glycerol, and citric-alkaline solutions). Iodine in SOM was selectively bound to a small-size aromatic subunit (less than 10 kDa), and majority of water soluble $$^{129}$$I was associated with a low molecular weight amphiphilic organic carrier (13.5-15 kDa). From these results, it was suggested that (1) SOM behaved as a sink as well as a source for iodine at the SRS, and (2) the function of SOM varies with groundwater chemistry.

We report on the event structure and double helicity asymmetry ($$A_{LL}$$) of jet production in longitudinally polarized $$p + p$$ collisions at $$sqrt{s}$$ = 200 GeV. Photons and charged particles were measured by the PHENIX experiment. Event structure was compared with the results from PYTHIA event generator. The production rate of reconstructed jets is satisfactorily reproduced with the next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculation. We measured $$A_{LL}$$ = -0.0014 $$pm$$ 0.0037 at the lowest $$P_T$$ bin and -0.0181 $$pm$$ 0.0282 at the highest $$P_T$$ bin. The measured $$A_{LL}$$ is compared with the predictions that assume various $$Delta G(x)$$ distributions.

Transverse momentum distributions and yields for $$pi^{pm}, K^{pm}, p$$, and $$bar{p}$$ in $$p + p$$ collisions at $$sqrt{s}$$ = 200 and 62.4 GeV at midrapidity are measured by the PHENIX experiment at the RHIC. We present the inverse slope parameter, mean transverse momentum, and yield per unit rapidity at each energy, and compare them to other measurements at different $$sqrt{s}$$ collisions. We also present the scaling properties such as $$m_T$$ and $$x_T$$ scaling and discuss the mechanism of the particle production in $$p + p$$ collisions. The measured spectra are compared to next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations.

The PHENIX experiment at RHIC has measured the invariant differential cross section for production of $$K^0_s$$, $$omega$$, $$eta'$$ and $$phi$$ mesons in $$p + p$$ collisions at $$sqrt{s}$$ = 200 GeV. The spectral shapes of all hadron transverse momentum distributions are well described by a Tsallis distribution functional form with only two parameters, $$n$$ and $$T$$, determining the high $$p_T$$ and characterizing the low $$p_T$$ regions for the spectra, respectively. The integrated invariant cross sections calculated from the fitted distributions are found to be consistent with existing measurements and with statistical model predictions.

The PHITS code is a three-dimensional Monte Carlo code that is able to simulate the transport of nuclei and other particles in complicated geometries. As a part of a comprehensive benchmarking program, we have investigated the possibility of using PHITS to calculate partial charge-changing cross sections and we have compared the results with measurements. The results suggest that the current reaction-cross-section models might be inadequate for use in space radiation protection: We therefore claim the need for a thorough benchmarking of the models and for new reaction-cross-section measurements and experimental techniques.
