For operation with such a high beam current, itis important to understand transverse and longitudinal beam properties especially in low-velocity region. A medium energy beam transport (MEBT1) line between the 3-MeV radio-frequency quadrupole linac (RFQ) and the 50-MeV drift-tube linac (DTL) is a 3-m-long transport line to match the beam to the DTL and produce a macro pulse configuration for a 3-GeV rapid-cycling synchrotron (RCS). In this paper, recent measurements and beam tuning results in MEBT1 will be presented.

Upgrades for the RIKEN heavy-ion linac (RILAC) involving a new superconducting linac (SRILAC) are currently underway at the RIKEN radioactive isotope beam factory (RIBF). It is crucially important to develop nondestructive beam measurement diagnostics. We have developed a beam energy position monitor (BEPM) system which can measure not only the beam position but also the beam energy simultaneously by measuring the time of flight of the beam. We fabricated 11 BEPMs and completed the position calibration to obtain the sensitivity and offset for each BEPMs. The position accuracy has been achieved to be less than 0.1 mm by using the mapping measurement.

Transport process of negative hydrogen ion (H) in LEBT (Low Energy Beam Transport) is investigated by comparison of experimental and numerical results. A three dimensional Particle-In-Cell (PIC) particle transport model has been developed in order to take into account (i) axial magnetic field by two solenoids in J-PARC LEBT and (ii) radial electric field by space charge (SC) effect. Ratio of H
beam particles inside the RFQ (Radio Frequency Quadrupole) acceptance to the total particles at the RFQ entrance is calculated for different current conditions in LEBT solenoid 1 and 2. The results are compared with RFQ transmission rate measured in the J-PARC linac commissioning. The double peak of RFQ transmission rate to the solenoid applied current seen in the measurement is explained by the calculation results. The results indicate that presence of the LEBT orifice for differential pumping plays a role as a collimator to reduce emittance at RFQ entrance.

J-PARC is a multi-purpose facility. Accelerator stability is the one of important issues for users of this facility. To realize stable operation, we must collect data on interlocked events and analyze these data to determine the reasons for the occurrence of such events. In J-PARC Linac, data of interlocked events have been recorded using several some beam loss monitors and current monitors, and these data have been are analyzed and classified. In J-PARC RCS, new instrumentation is being introduced to obtain beam position. We discuss the present status and future plans related to this subject.

In the low velocity section of a proton or heavy ion linac, the diagnostic method for longitudinal beam properties is less established compared to that for transverse properties. We have developed a new diagnostic method for the longitudinal bunch size by utilizing an RF deflector. We evaluated the uncertainty in bunch size measurement through simulation, and it was obtained as 0.5. In addition, we measured longitudinal beam emittance through bunch size measurements at several RF amplitudes of an upstream buncher. The measured emittance was 0.13
0.01
deg
MeV, which was consistent with the simulation result.

Ions or luminescence generated by passing the beam through the gas sheet has the information of cross-section shape of the beam. The gas sheet beam monitor will become a useful tool to measure the profile of high power beams because it has no breakable element such as wires. Furthermore, 2-D beam profile can be obtaine at a certain position of beam line. We applied the gas-sheet based beam profile monitor to J-PARC LINAC, where the negative hydrogen atoms are accelerated to the energy of 400 MeV. The vacuum system was carefully designed not to make an unacceptable pressure rise in nearby cavities when the gas was injected. The clear image of the beam profile was successfully obtained by detecting the ionized N gas.

A wire-scanner monitor using metallic wire is reliably employed for the beam-profile measurement in the J-PARC linac. Because the loading of negative hydrogen (H) ion beam on a wire increases under high-current beam operation, we focus on using a high-durability beam profile monitors by attaching another wire material. Carbon nanotubes (CNT) are made of graphite in a cylindrical shape and have a tensile strength not less than 100 times that of steel. The electric conductivity has higher than that of metals, and hardness is endured thermally around 3000
C in a vacuum circumstance. We applied the wires made from CNT to WSM and measured transverse profiles with a 3-MeV H
beam. As a result, we obtained the equivalent signal levels taken by carbon wire made of polyacrylonitrile without any damage. In this paper, the signal response when the CNT is irradiated with an H
beam and the result of beam profile measurement. In addition, the surface of CNT after 3-MeV beam operation was observed.

The stepping motor control system used in the profile monitor and RCS collimator of J-PARC is configured by VME-based. Most of these pieces of control equipment are in use for more than 10 years. Therefore, countermeasures against aging of equipment are necessary. In addition, it is necessary to implement countermeasures against malfunction of the control system, which is thought to be caused by radiation. In 2016, a malfunction occurred in the motor control system of the RCS collimator. Taking this as a starting point, we began developing a motor control system that can ensure equipment safety even if a malfunction occurs. In this paper, we show the inference of the cause of this malfunction and present details of the developed high-safety motor control system.

The J-PARC linac operation is stable, however, the numbers of interlocked events due to single beam loss monitor (BLMP) is increasing. Recently, the counts is comparable to the number of RFQ trip, and a measure has been required for improvement of the operation efficiency. Thus, every event data has been analyzed and classified into three categories. It is found that there are characteristic signal or pattern of BLMP for every categories. Although the linac BLMP detector is standard, its setting parameters are differ from those of other two synchrotrons in the J-PARC. To optimize time resolution, the input impedance of its pre-amplifier is selected to be 50 and interlock is defined in raw signal height and width not integral signal of BLMP. Some new parameters has been tried to reduce unnecessary interlock.
