To enhance energy separation in a counter-current Ranque-Hilsch vortex tube, a newly designed hollow helical fin was inserted into the hot tube of the vortex tube. In this study, the effect of the fin on the energy separation was investigated using three types of the vortex tube, and then computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation has been conducted to understand the experimental results and discuss the flow structure in the vortex tube with the hollow helical fin. As a result, it was found from the experimental data that the fin effectively enhanced energy separation, and that the tube length could be shorten. When the inlet air pressure was 0.5 MPa, the maximum temperature difference from the inlet to the cold exit was 62.2C. The CFD code employing the Reynolds Stress Model (RSM) turbulence model was used to analyze the fluid dynamics in the vortex tube. As a result, it was confirmed that the temperature, velocity, and pressure distributions changed significantly at the stagnation point, and that the distributions in the tube with the fin were completely different from those without the fin. It was thought that a strong reversing helical vortex flow with small recirculating vortex structure formed between the fin end and the stagnation point on the cold exit side would enhance energy separation in the vortex tube with the hollow helical fin.

We have constructed a linac for development of various accelerator components at J-PARC. The ion source is same as the J-PARC linac's, and the RFQ is a used one in the J-PARC linac. The beam energy is 3 MeV and nominal beam current is 30 mA. The accelerator has been already commissioned, and the first development program, laser-charge-exchange experiment for the transmutation experimental facility, has been started. In this paper, present status of this 3-MeV linac is presented.

Proceedings of 13th Annual Meeting of Particle Accelerator Society of Japan (Internet), p.310 - 313, 2016/11
We have used a beam scraper with the incident angle of 65deg to reduce the beam power deposition density in the MEBT between a 324 MHz RFQ and a 50-MeV DTL of the J-PARC linac. The 65 scraper was irradiated by the H beam up to particle number of 1.47E22. We observed a lot of surface projections with several hundred micrometers high in the beam irradiation damage on the scraper by using the laser microscope. In order to study the limits of scrapers, we constructed a new 3 MeV linac at J-PARC. We will conduct the scraper irradiation test at the end of this year.

Radial electric field excitation, using discharges having a two-step transition. Examining time derivative of Poissons equation, it is found that the sum of the loss cone loss current and neoclassical bulk viscosity current agrees the experimentally observed current in the order of magnitude at the first transition. Following second transition and an ambipolar condition in the L-mode cannot be explained by the models.

Spatiotemporal dynamics of the LCO is analyzed in detail. Zonal fows are not seen, and modulation in edge-localized poloidal flow and density gradient is observed. Modulation is also seen in Reynolds stress, caused by that in turbulence intensity and turbulence wavenumber. However, flow acceleration is not able to be explained by the modulation in the Reynolds stress. Rapid inward propagation in density gradient and turbulence packet is also observed. Characteristics of the propagation are veried by means of turbulence spreading theory and diffusion theory.

Zonal flows are not observed during LCO, and the oscillation is the periodic generations/decays of barrier with edge localized mean flow. Oscillatory Reynolds stress is found too small to accelerate the LCO flow. Changes of the density gradient and turbulence amplitude are found to propagate into the core in a ballistic manner, suggesting a cause of fast change of core transport after H-mode transition.

The number of research reactors in the world is decreasing because of their aging. However, the planning to introduce the nuclear power plants is increasing in Asian countries. In these Asian countries, the key issue is the human resource development for operation and management of nuclear power plants after constructed them, and also the necessity of research reactor, which is used for lifetime extension of LWRs, progress of the science and technology, expansion of industry use, human resources training and so on, is increasing. From above backgrounds, the Neutron Irradiation and Testing Reactor Center began to discuss basic concept of a multipurpose low-power research reactor for education and training, etc. This design study is expected to contribute not only to design tool improvement and human resources development in the Neutron Irradiation and Testing Reactor Center but also to maintain and upgrade the technology on research reactors in nuclear power-related companies. This report treats the activities of the working group from July 2010 to June 2011 on the multipurpose low-power research reactor in the Neutron Irradiation and Testing Reactor Center and nuclear power-related companies.

There exist some equipments made of Ti or Ti-5Ta alloy in the spent nuclear fuel reprocessing plant. These equipments are investigated for failure by hydrogen embrittlement. To evaluate the stabilities of hydrogen in the solutions using at the reprocessing plant, channel-flow-ellectrode (CFE) method was utilized. The method to determine the dissolved hydrogen concentration was considered from the results of anodic polarization curves.

Solid-electrolyte oxygen-probe was developed for measurement of oxygen concentration in lead bismuth eutectic. The difference of the probe from conventional ones is that first reference electrolyte is iron oxide, secondly it is a cassette type model that can be a part of circulating pipe, and thirdly measuring temperature is below 400 C. Proto type probe was attached in the circulating PbBi loop of JAEA and measurement rest was done during about 8000 hrs. Oxygen concentration of the loop, with non-active oxygen control but PbBi was shielded from the air by high purity argon gas, was evaluated to be 1E-5 to 1E-2 wppm.
