Experimental and numerical study on energy separation in vortex tube with a hollow helical fin (Joint research)

To enhance energy separation in a counter-current Ranque-Hilsch vortex tube, a newly designed hollow helical fin was inserted into the hot tube of the vortex tube. In this study, the effect of the fin on the energy separation was investigated using three types of the vortex tube, and then computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation has been conducted to understand the experimental results and discuss the flow structure in the vortex tube with the hollow helical fin. As a result, it was found from the experimental data that the fin effectively enhanced energy separation, and that the tube length could be shorten. When the inlet air pressure was 0.5 MPa, the maximum temperature difference from the inlet to the cold exit was 62.2$$^{circ}$$C. The CFD code employing the Reynolds Stress Model (RSM) turbulence model was used to analyze the fluid dynamics in the vortex tube. As a result, it was confirmed that the temperature, velocity, and pressure distributions changed significantly at the stagnation point, and that the distributions in the tube with the fin were completely different from those without the fin. It was thought that a strong reversing helical vortex flow with small recirculating vortex structure formed between the fin end and the stagnation point on the cold exit side would enhance energy separation in the vortex tube with the hollow helical fin.

Here we report observations of Ryugu's subsurface material by the Near-Infrared Spectrometer (NIRS3) on the Hayabusa2 spacecraft. Reflectance spectra of excavated material exhibit a hydroxyl (OH) absorption feature that is slightly stronger and peak-shifted compared with that observed for the surface, indicating that space weathering and/or radiative heating have caused subtle spectral changes in the uppermost surface. However, the strength and shape of the OH feature still suggests that the subsurface material experienced heating above 300 $$^{circ}$$C, similar to the surface. In contrast, thermophysical modeling indicates that radiative heating does not increase the temperature above 200 $$^{circ}$$C at the estimated excavation depth of 1 m, even if the semimajor axis is reduced to 0.344 au. This supports the hypothesis that primary thermal alteration occurred due to radiogenic and/or impact heating on Ryugu's parent body.

The researches on engineering technology in the Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory (MIU) project in FY2016, detailed investigations of the (mechanical) behaviors of the plug and the rock mass around the reflood tunnel through ongoing reflood test were performed as part of (5) development of technologies for restoration and/or reduction of the excavation damage. As the result, particularly for the temperature change of the plug, its analytical results agree fairly well agree with the measurement ones. This means cracks induced by temperature stress can be prevented by the cooling countermeasure works reviewed in designing stage. In addition, for the behaviors of the plug and the bedrock boundary after reflooding the reflood tunnel, comparison between the results obtained by coupled hydro-mechanical analysis (stress-fluid coupled analysis) with the ones by several measurements, concluded that the model established based on the analysis results is generally appropriated.

The researches on examination of the plug applied to the future reflood test was conducted as a part of (5) development of technologies for restoration and/on reduction of the excavation damage relating to the engineering technology in the MIU (2014), specifically focused on (1) plug examination (e.g. functions, structure and material) and the quality control methods and (2) analytical evaluation of rock mass behavior around the plug through the reflood test. As the result, specifications of the plug were determined. These specifications should be able to meet requirements for the safety structure and surrounding rock mass against predicted maximum water pressure, temperature stress and seismic force, and for controlling the groundwater inflow, ensuring the access into the reflood gallery and the penetration performance of measurement cable. Also preliminary knowledge regarding the rock mass behavior around the plug after flooding the reflood gallery by installed plug was obtained.

The researches on engineering technology in the Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory (MIU) project consists of (1) development of design and construction planning technologies, (2) development of construction technology, (3) development of countermeasure technology, (4) development of technology for security, and (5) development of technologies for restoration and/or reduction of the excavation damage. The researches on engineering technology such as verification of the initial design were being conducted by using data measured during construction as a part of the second phase of the MIU plan. Examination about the plug for reflood test in the GL-500m Access/Research Gallery-North as part of the development of technologies for restoration and/or reduction of excavation damage were carried out. Specifically, Literature survey was carried out about the plug, based on the result of literature survey, examination of the design condition, design of the plug and rock stability using numerical simulation, selection of materials for major parts, and grouting for water inflow from between rock and plug, were carried out in this study.

The number of research reactors in the world is decreasing because of their aging. However, the planning to introduce the nuclear power plants is increasing in Asian countries. In these Asian countries, the key issue is the human resource development for operation and management of nuclear power plants after constructed them, and also the necessity of research reactor, which is used for lifetime extension of LWRs, progress of the science and technology, expansion of industry use, human resources training and so on, is increasing. From above backgrounds, the Neutron Irradiation and Testing Reactor Center began to discuss basic concept of a multipurpose low-power research reactor for education and training, etc. This design study is expected to contribute not only to design tool improvement and human resources development in the Neutron Irradiation and Testing Reactor Center but also to maintain and upgrade the technology on research reactors in nuclear power-related companies. This report treats the activities of the working group from July 2010 to June 2011 on the multipurpose low-power research reactor in the Neutron Irradiation and Testing Reactor Center and nuclear power-related companies.

The electrostatic fluctuation spectrum and the fluctuation-induced particle flux of the JFT-2M tokamak were estimated using the hevy ion beam probe (HIBP) measurement. A geodesic acoustic mode (GAM) of the frequency about15kHz was identified in the L-mode. The GAM has its peak at about 3cm inside of the separatrix with the electric field of about 1.4kV/m. The estimated turbulent particle flux is found to be intermittent. It is found that the density fluctuation is modulated by the GAM in the wide frequency range and the coherence analysis shows that the flucruation-induced particle flux is partially contributed by the GAM. In the H-mode the GAM disappears and the fluctuation and the flux is much decreased.The mechanism of the large burst-like flux in the L-mode is not understood yet and left as the future problem.

The diagnostic system of JFT-2M has consisted of about 30 individual diagnostic instruments,which were used to study the plasma production, control, equilibrium, stability, confinement, plasma heating by NBI and/or RF (LH, ICRF, ECH) and current drive by RF. In these instruments, the motional Stark effect (MSE) polarimeter, charge exchanged recombination spectroscopy (CXRS), heavy-ion beam probe (HIBP), time of flight (TOF) neutral particle analyzer, etc. have contributed to make clear the improved mechanism of confinement such as H-mode and High Recycling Steady (HRS) H-mode, and to search the operational region of these modes.The infrared TV camera system and lost ion probe have played a very important role to investigate the heat load onto the walls due to ripple loss particles and escaping ions from core plasma, respectively.

Study on the cause of the fire and explosion incident at bituminization demonstration facility of PNC Tokai Works

On march 11,1997, bituminization demonstration facility(BDF) in Tokai Reprocessing Plant (TRP) of power reactor and nuclear fuel development corporation (PNC) made fire and explosion incident. Investigation of the cause of the fire and explosion incident at BDF was carefully conducted. The main cause of the fire is clarified to have been physical heating inside the extruder that provided unusual high temperature of bituminized product at filling. Physical feating is considered to be derived from decrease of feed rate of liquid waste to the extruder. The causes of the explosion are accumulation offlammable gas generated from insufficiently extinguished bituminized product inside the filling room of which the ventilation system was shut doen. The gas was ignited by another ignition of the heated drum.
