Nihon Genshiryoku Gakkai Wabun Rombunshi, 15(4), p.210 - 222, 2016/12

In the experimental fast reactor Joyo, it was confirmed that the top of the irradiation test sub-assembly of material testing rig named "MARICO-2" had been broken and bent onto the in-vessel storage rack as an obstacle and had damaged the upper core structure (UCS). As the result, for Joyo restart, it was necessary to replace the damaged UCS and to retrieve the bent sub-assembly. This paper describes in-vessel repair techniques performed in the retrieval work of the obstacle inside of the reactor vessel. The devices which were prepared for this work demonstrated expected performance under the environmental conditions of an SFR such as high temperature and radiation dose, and the work was completed in 2014. The successful operation of this retrieval work of the damaged component inside of a reactor vessel will contribute to the development of in-service inspections and repair technics in an SFR.

We have measured the azimuthal anisotropy of neutrons emitted from the $$^{56}$$Fe($$gamma$$, n)$$^{55}$$Fe reaction with a linearly polarized $$gamma$$ ray beam generated by laser Compton scattering at NewSUBARU. Neutron yields at the polar angle of 90$$^{circ}$$ have been measured as a function of the azimuthal angle $$phi$$ between the detector and the linear polarization plane of the ray beam. The azimuthal anisotropy of neutrons measured at seven angles has been well reproduced using a theoretically predicted function of $$a$$ + $$b$$cos(2$$phi$$).

It was predicted in 1950's, the neutron angular distribution in ($$gamma$$, n) reactions with a 100% linearly polarized $$gamma$$-ray beam should be anisotropic and described by a simple function of a + b sin$$^{2}$$$${theta}$$ at 90$$^{circ}$$ on the beam axis but it has not been experimentally confirmed for middle-heavy nuclides over than half a century. We have verified experimentally this angular distribution on $$^{197}$$Au, $$^{127}$$I, and natural Cu using linearly polarized laser Compton scattering $$gamma$$-rays at NewSUBARU.

In the experimental fast reactor Joyo, failure of disconnecting the irradiation test subassembly MARICO-2 (Material Testing Irradiation Rig with Temperature Control) was occurred and top of the MARICO-2 test subassembly was bent onto the in-vessel storage rack. As a result of this incident, the operation area of rotating plug for the fuel exchange in Joyo is limited. The replacement of the damaged UCS and retrieving the bent MARICO-2 are required to Joyo restoration. This report describes about investigations and some tests to know the status of MARICO-2 test subassembly and the optimized detail design of retrieval device reflecting those results.

The in-vessel gamma dose rate was measured in the experimental fast reactor Joyo to evaluate the activation of reactor structural components and the radiation exposure of the fiber scope used for in-vessel visual inspection. The measurement system, which requires a wide sensitivity range and high durability in a high-temperature environment, was specifically developed for use in the sodium cooled fast reactor. Using this system, the in-vessel gamma dose rate with cooling times of 450 and 720 days after reactor shutdown was measured in Joyo, which has been operated for 71,000 hours over approximately 30 years. The gamma dose rate was calculated using QAD-CGGP2 code with the gamma source intensity obtained by the ORIGEN2 code. The neutron flux used as input to the ORIGEN2 was evaluated by the Joyo dosimetry method. The ratio between the calculated and experimental values ranged from 1.1 to 2.4, confirming the accuracy of gamma dose rate and component activation calculation.

Anion-exchange chromatography of element 105, dubnium (Db), produced in the $$^{248}$$Cm($$^{19}$$F, 5n)$$^{262}$$Db reaction is investigated together with the homologues Nb and Ta, and the pseudo-homologue Pa in 13.9 M hydrofluoric acid (HF) solution. The distribution coefficient (K$$_{d}$$) of Db on an anion-exchange resin is successfully determined by running cycles of the 1702 chromatographic column separations. The result clearly indicates that the adsorption of Db on the resin is significantly different from that of the homologues and that the adsorption of anionic fluoro complexes of these elements decreases in the sequence of Ta $$approx$$ Nb $$>$$ Db $$geq$$ Pa.

A partial mock-up of a breeding blanket structure made of F82H steel has been successfully fabricated. In this study, microstructural observation and EDX analysis of the HIP interfaces were performed, and effects of irradiation on mechanical properties of the HIP-bonded region were also examined. Neutron irradiation was performed up to about 2 dpa at about 523 K. After the irradiation, tensile test was performed at temperatures of 295 and 523 K. The HIP interfaces possessed many precipitates, and enriched peak spectrum of chromium was detected from the precipitates. In addition, aspect of the spectrum was qualitatively equivalent to that of M$$_{23}$$C$$_{6}$$ in grain boundaries of F82H steel. In result, the HIP boundary has many M$$_{23}$$C$$_{6}$$ which were generally seen in grain boundaries of F82H steel. Rupture did not occur in the HIP interface. In result, it can be mentioned that bondability is maintained under the irradiation and testing conditions. The strength and elongation of the HIP-bonded region decreased somewhat in comparison with the results of an IEA standard steel.

The M1 strength in atomic nuclei is important for estimation of neutrino-nucleus interactions in supernovae. We have proposed a method using ($$gamma$$, n) reactions with linear polarized laser Compton scattering (LCS) $$gamma$$-rays to measure the M1 strength and verified a theoretical prediction for the first time.

The MARICO-2 irradiation test part has been bent onto the in-vessel storage rack approximately 200 mm in horizontal length. As a result, the transfer pot in which the MARICO-2 irradiation test part has been installed can't be handled with the refueling machine. In order to confirm the condition of the bent MARICO-2 irradiation test subassembly and take the appropriate method, MARICO-2 lifting up test was conducted with a simple handling device which gripped the bent wrapper tube and lifted up the MARICO-2 irradiation test part approximately 40 mm. The test result confirmed that the MARICO-2 irradiation test part was stuck in the transfer pot due to the deformation of wrapper tube. Therefore, we will investigate the detail design of the MARICO-2 retrieval device with the fuel transfer pot and inspect whether the MARICO-2 is pulled out from the transfer pot.

Piping in a nuclear power plant puts across each floor at the same building or between two buildings, and it has many supported points. Therefore, the piping should be as a model subjected to multiple inputs in seismic analysis, but there isn't almost knowledge concerned with analysis for multiple inputs. In this paper, the analysis by using TDOF model having two supported points, and the shaking test by using U-bend piping test piece having two supported points was performed to investigate response of piping subjected to multiple inputs. As a result, the possibility of response analysis for piping subjected to multiple inputs was confirmed.

In 1950's, Agodi predicted that the neutron angular distribution in ($$gamma$$, n) reactions with a 100% linearly polarized $$gamma$$-ray beam for dipole excitation should be anisotropic and universally described by the simple function of a + b$$cdot$$cos($${2}{phi}$$)at polar angle $$theta$$=90$$^{circ}$$, where $$phi$$ is the azimuthal angle, but it has not been experimentally confirmed over half a century. The work by Agodi had been forgotten after 1970's. We have verified experimentally this angular distribution on three targets using linearly polarized laser Compton scattering $$gamma$$-rays at NewSUBARU for the first time.

Neutron angular distributions from ($$gamma$$, n) reactions on heavy isotopes have not been studied yet. We report a result of the photon-induced reaction on $$^{56}$$Fe. We have measured neutrons using a time-of-flight method. We have measured angular distribution of neutrons by change of the angle of the linear polarization plain of the incident $$gamma$$-ray beam. The $$gamma$$-ray beam has been generated by laser Compton scattering at NewSUBARU.

The 15th periodic inspection of Joyo commenced in May 2007 with the Fuel Handling Machine (FHM) being set up on the Rotating Plug (R/P) for refueling in June. When the R/P was taken down, measuring the load of the Hold-Down Shaft (HDS) revealed an abnormal decrease above the in-vessel storage rack (IVS). As a result of the observations, it was discovered that the top of the irradiation test S/A "MARICO-2"had bent onto the IVS as an obstacle, and had damaged the Upper Core Structure (UCS). The other action items in the restoration work, which are design of UCS and MARICO-2 handling device will be investigated in detail designs. The experience obtained through the restoration work in Joyo will provided valuable insights into possible further improvements and verifications for in-vessel inspection and repair techniques in SFRs.
