The Eu(III) distribution mechanism in single extractant-impregnated polymer-layered silica particle in a complex solution containing multiple lanthanide ions was investigated using fluorescence microspectroscopy. The rate-determining step was the reaction of Eu(III) with the two extractant molecules. The obtained mechanism and rate constants agreed with those of the single-ion distribution system, in which Eu(III) was distributed to the particles in the Eu(III) solution.

In the present study, we have elucidated the mass transfer mechanism of Eu(III) and Sm(III) in the solution with these ions in single nitrilotriacetamide (NTA) extractant-impregnated polymer-coated silica particle. The rate-limiting process of mass transfer was the reaction process of ions with NTA molecules, in which the NO$$_{3}$$$$^{-}$$ ions were not involved, which was consistent with that obtained in single ion distribution system.

We investigated the distribution mechanism of Eu(III) in a single polymer-coated silica particle including nitrilotriacetamide (NTA) extractants known as HONTA and TOD2EHNTA. The present study provides a valuable approach for the evaluation and enhancement of the functionality of "single extractant-impregnated polymer-coated silica particle".

We developed a hybrid MA(III) recovery process combining MA(III)+Ln(III) co-recovery flowsheet by solvent extraction with TBP and MA(III)/Ln(III) separation flowsheet by simulated moving bed chromatography using HONTA impregnated adsorbents with large particle size porous silica support.

Neutron resonance absorption imaging was adapted to observe the Eu band adsorbed in the CMPO/SiO$$_{2}$$-P column for minor actinide recovery by extraction chromatography. Several wet columns were prepared by either light water or heavy water and compared with the dry column to evaluate the neutron transmission. The neutron transmission spectra showed that 45% was transmitted through the dry column while 20% and 40% were transmitted through the wet columns of light water and heavy water, respectively. The results indicated that heavy water is more applicable than light water to observe the Eu adsorption band in the CMPO/SiO$$_{2}$$-P column.

no journal, ,

High-level liquid waste generated by reprocessing spent nuclear fuel is geologically disposed after vitrification, and partitioning and transmutation of minor actinide (MA: Am, Cm) is performed to minimize the volume and toxicity of radioactive waste. We have been developing extraction chromatography for selective MA partitioning. The calculation code that simulates partitioning behavior of ions is developed, but the chromatogram is not yet reproduced adequately. The resonance neutron imaging at J-PARC allows us to observe partitioning behavior of ions inside the column undestructively. The obtained diffusion and dispersion data is applied to upgrade the simulation code as well as increase of column partition property.
