The neutron instruments suite, installed at the spallation neutron source of the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), is reviewed. MLF has 23 neutron beam ports and 21 instruments are in operation for user programs or are under commissioning. A unique and challenging instrumental suite in MLF has been realized via combination of a high-performance neutron source, optimized for neutron scattering, and unique instruments using cutting-edge technologies. All instruments are/will serve in world-leading investigations in a broad range of fields, from fundamental physics to industrial applications. In this review, overviews, characteristic features, and typical applications of the individual instruments are mentioned.

Neutron diffraction profiles of low-D$$_{2}$$O-content poly-N,N,-dimethylacrylamide (PDMAA) hydrogels were measured from 100 to 300 K to investigate the structure and properties of water in hydrogels. A broad diffraction observed at temperatures lower than 220 K indicates the existence of amorphous ice in the hydrogels at low temperatures. During the heating process, diffraction peaks from ice crystals appear in the profiles. These peaks indicate that cubic ice and hexagonal ice exist at T $$geq$$ 220 K. We refined the structure parameters of these ices in the hydrogel, which indicate the existence of low-density ice in the hydrogel.

Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is a promising barrier material for graphene spintronics. In this study, spin-polarized metastable de-excitation spectroscopy (SPMDS) is employed to study the spin-dependent electronic structure of monolayer h-BN on Ni(111). The extreme surface sensitivity of SPMDS enables us to elucidate a partial filling of the in-gap states of h-BN without any superposition of Ni 3$$d$$ signals. The in-gap states are shown to have a considerable spin polarization parallel to the majority spin of Ni. The positive spin polarization is attributed to the $$pi$$-$$d$$ hybridization and the effective spin transfer to the nitrogen atoms at the h-BN/Ni(111) interface.

Quantitative measurement of hard X-ray spectra for high intensity laser produced plasma

X-ray line spectra ranging from 17 to 77 keV were quantitatively measured with a Laue spectrometer, composed of a cylindrically curved crystal and a detector. Either a visible CCD detector coupled with a CsI phosphor screen or an imaging plate can be chosen, depending on the signal intensities and exposure times. The absolute sensitivity of the spectrometer system was calibrated using pre-characterized laser-produced X-ray sources and radioisotopes. The integrated reflectivity for the crystal is in good agreement with predictions by an open code for X-ray diffraction. The energy transfer efficiency from incident laser beams to hot electrons, as the energy transfer agency for specific X-ray line emissions, is derived as a consequence of this work.

A proton beam driven by a repetitive high-intensity-laser is utilized to induce a $$^{7}$$Li(p,n)$$^{7}$$Be nuclear reaction. The total activity of $$^{7}$$Be are evaluated by two different methods. The activity obtained measuring the decay $$gamma$$-rays after 1912 shots at 1 Hz is 1.7$$pm$$0.2 Bq. This is in good agreement with 1.6$$pm$$0.3 Bq evaluated from the proton energy distribution measured using a time-of-flight detector and the nuclear reaction cross-sections. We conclude that the production of activity can be monitored in real time using the time-of-flight-detector placed inside a diverging proton beam coupled with a high-speed signal processing system.

Based on the implementing agreement between National Nuclear Center of the Republic of Kazakhstan (NNC) and the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) for the Nuclear Technology on Testing/Research Reactors in the cooperation in Nuclear Energy Research and Development in Nuclear Energy and Technology, four specific topics of cooperation (STC) have been carried out from June, 2009. Four STCs are as follows; (1) STC No.II-1: International Standard of Instrumentation, (2) STC No.II-2: Irradiation Technology of RI Production, (3) STC No.II-3: Lifetime Expansion of Beryllium Reflector, (4) STC No.II-4: Irradiation Technology for NTD-Si. The information exchange, personal exchange and cooperation experiments are carried out under these STCs. The status in the field of nuclear technology on testing/research reactors in the implementing arrangement is summarized, and future plans of these specific topics of cooperation are described in this report.

Efficient multi-keV X-ray generation from a high-Z target irradiated with a clean ultra-short laser pulse

$$Kalpha$$ line emission from Mo and Ag plate were experimentally studied by using ultra-high intensity, clean femtosecond laser pulses. Absolutely yield of $$Kalpha$$ X-rays at 17 keV from Mo and 22 keV from Ag were measured as a function of the laser pulse contrast ratio and irradiation intensity. Significant enhancement of $$Kalpha$$ yields were obtained for both Mo and Ag with higher contrast ratios and high irradiance. The conversion efficiencies of 4.28 $$times$$ 10$$^{-5}$$/sr for Mo and 4.84 $$times$$ 10$$^{-5}$$/sr for Ag, the highest values ever obtained, have been demonstarted with the contrast ratio of 10$$^{-10}$$ to 10$$^{-11}$$.

Many applications of laser-accelerated ions will require beamlines with diagnostic capability for validating simulations and machine performance at the single bunch level as well as for the development of controls to optimize machine performance. We demonstrated prompt, in-line, single bunch transverse profile and energy spectrum detection using a thin luminescent diagnostic and scintillator-based time-of-flight spectrometer simultaneously. The Monte Carlo code, particle and heavy ion transport code systems (PHITS) simulation is shown to be reasonably predictive at low proton energy for the observed transverse profiles measured by the thin luminescent monitor and also for single bunch energy spectra measured by time-of-flight spectrometry.

Monochromatic X-ray emission from laser produced plasma with a clean ultra-short laser pulse

Monochromatic X-ray generation from Cu plates was experimentally studied by using a high contrast femtosecond laser pulse. Absolute yield of Ka line at 8 keV was measured as a function of laser pulse contrast ration and irradiation intensity. The conversion efficiency of 8 $$times$$ 10$$^{-5}$$/sr, the highest value ever obtained, has been demonstrated at 5.5 $$times$$ 10$$^{16}$$ W/cm$$^{2}$$ with a contrast ratio of 10$$^{-11}$$.
