Photoemission electron microcopy (PEEM) and thermionic emission electron microscopy (TEEM) both revealed that the hBN coated region of a LaB(100) single crystal has lower work function compared to the bare (i.e., non-coated) and graphene coated regions. A larger decrease of work function for the hBN coated LaB(100) compared to graphene coated LaB(100) was qualitatively supported by our density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Adding an oxide layer in the calculations improved consistency between the calculation and experimental results. We followed up our calculations with synchrotron-radiation X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (SR-XPS) and confirmed the presence of an oxide layer on our LaB.

The first chemical experiment on Fl suggested that Fl is a noble-gas-like element, while the second studies suggested that Fl has a volatile-metal-like character. To obtain more reliable conclusion, we performed further experimental studies on Fl adsorption behavior on Si oxide and gold surfaces. The present results suggest that Fl is highly volatile and less reactive than the volatile metal, Hg, but has higher reactivity than the noble gas, Rn.

This is a model study to measure adsorption enthalpies of superheavy elements Cn, Nh, and Fl. The short-lived isotopes were produced and separated by the gas-filled recoil separator TASCA at GSI. The products were stopped in He gas, and flushed into gas chromatography columns made of Si detectors whose surfaces were covered by SiO or Au. The short-lived Tl and Pb were successfully measured by the Si detectors with the SiO surface at room temperature. On the other hand, the Hg did not adsorb on the SiO surface, but adsorbed on the Au surface. The results demonstrated that the adsorption properties of short-lived Hg, Tl, and Pb could be studied with this setup, and that this method is applicable to the experiment for Cn, Nh, and Fl.

In previous studies, isotopic distributions of the products of below-target isotopes were found to be broader than those of above-target isotopes, which had been interpreted as larger contributions of strongly dumped collisions in the productions of below-target isotopes than above-target ones. However, in the present study, the average total kinetic energy loss (TKEL), and thus, the average excitation energies were determined for both below-target and above-target isotopes, and they were found to be similar. This contradicts the previous interpretation, and thus, a new interpretation has been proposed; highly excited above-target products are lost by fission.

Lanthanum hexaboride (LaB) has a low work-function and is widely used as a thermionic cathode. For practical application, further reduction of its work-function and high durability have been required. In this study, the effect of 2D material coating materials (graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN)) prepared by a wet-transfer method on the work-function of LaB(100) was studied by using photoelectron emission microscopy (PEEM), synchrotron radiation photoemission spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy and DFT calculations. PEEM images for samples after 905C heating clearly showed strong photoemission in the hBN coating region. DFT calculations indicated that the work-function increases in graphene due to the inward dipole formation, while the work function decreases in hBN due to the outward dipole forming at the interface.

LaB has been used as a thermionic cathode due to its low work function, but it is also expected to be used as a photocathode by further lowering the work function. Here, we report photoemission electron microcopy (PEEM), thermionic emission electron microscopy (TEEM) and synchrotron radiation X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (SR-XPS) study on the work function change of LaB by coating with two-dimensional materials (graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN)). A larger decrease of work function for the hBN coated LaB(100) compared to graphene coated LaB(100) was observed and qualitatively explained by our density functional theory (DFT) calculations.
