Twenty-one laboratories pre-concentrated three of 10 L samples by five different pre-concentration methods (prussian-blue-impregnated filter cartridges, coprecipitation with ammonium phosphomolybdate, evaporation, solid-phase extraction disks, and ion-exchange resin columns), and activity of radiocesium was measured. The z-scores for all of the Cs results were within 2, indicating that the methods were accurate. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) indicating the variability in the results from different laboratories were larger than the RSDs indicating the variability in the results from each separate laboratory.

We describe three specific high power laser systems that are being developed in our laboratory for many applications in high field science, nonlinear optics and material processing. We report on a femtosecond petawatt-class Ti:sapphire chirped-pulse amplification laser system that can produce a pulse energy of 20 J of 40 fs pulse duration, a picosecond high intensity Yb:YAG chirped-pulse amplification laser system that can generate a pulse energy of 100 mJ of 0.5 ps pulse duration, and a nanosecond high repetition rate Nd:YAG laser system that can provide an average power of 360 W with a pulse duration of 30 ns delivered at a 1 kHz repetition rate. We discuss the basic design aspects and present the results from our experimental investigations of these laser systems.

Future synchrotron light source using a 5-GeV energy recovery linac (ERL) is under proposal by our Japanese collaboration team, and we are conducting R&D efforts for that. We are developing high-brightness DC photocathode guns, two types of cryomodules for both injector and main superconducting (SC) linacs, and 1.3 GHz high CW-power RF sources. We are also constructing the Compact ERL (cERL) for demonstrating the recirculation of low-emittance, high-current beams using above-mentioned critical technologies.

For vertical stability of elongated plasma and high beta access, a sector-wide conducting shell is arranged in between replaceable and permanent blanket. The reactor adopts pressurized-water-cooled solid breeding blanket. Compared with the previous advanced concept with supercritical water, the design options satisfying tritium self-sufficiency are relatively scarce. Considered divertor technology and materials, an allowable heat load to the divertor plate should be 8 MW/m or lower, which can be a critical constraint for determining a handling power of DEMO (a combination of alpha heating power and external input power for current drive).

We assumed competitive inhibitors of protein binding to be useful for procuring a favorable biodistribution of Re-MAG3-HBP because it has been reported that the concurrent administration of Tc-MAG3 and drugs with high affinity for serum protein enhanced total clearance and tissue distribution. The protein binding of Re-MAG3-HBP in a human serum albumin solution was significantly decreased by the addition of ceftriaxone. In the biodistribution experiments, pretreatment with ceftriaxone enhanced the clearance of the radioactivity of Re-MAG3-HBP in blood and nontarget tissues but had no effect on accumulation in bone. The findings suggested that the use of protein-binding competitive inhibitors would be effective in improving the pharmacokinetics of radiopharmaceuticals with high affinity for serum protein.

Distinctive features of the concept is low aspect ratio ( = 2.6) and use of a reduced-size center solenoid (CS) which has a function of plasma shaping rather than poloidal flux supply. The reduced-size CS enables us to introduce a thin toroidal field (TF) coil system which contributes to reducing the weight and construction cost of the reactor. SlimCS is as compact as advanced commercial reactor designs such as ARIES-RS and produces 1 GWe in spite of moderate requirements for plasma parameters. Merits of low-, i.e. vertical stability for high elongation and high beta limit are responsible for such reasonable physics requirements.

We have studied the electronic and magnetic properties of epitaxially grown CaMnRuO (x = 1.0, 0.5) thin films by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and hard X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HXPES). The XMCD studies indicated that the spin moments of Mn and Ru are aligned in the opposite directions. The HXPES spectra indicated the Ru 4d states at around the Fermi edge (E) and the Mn 3d states below E. From these results, we propose that the localized Mn 3d t states and the itinerant Ru 4d t band are antiferromagnetically coupled and give rise to ferromagnetism, in analogy with the mechanism proposed for the double perovskite oxides such as SrFeMoO.

We have examined the electronic states of the Kondo semiconductor CeRhAs and the semimetal CeRhSb by means of high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy using tunable photon energies from 40 up to 5948 eV. On the basis of the photon-energy dependence ofthe photoionization cross-section, we have elucidated the p-d-f hybridized states in these compounds.

We developed a highly stable rhenium-186 (Re)-MAG3 complex-conjugated bisphosphonate, (Re-MAG3-HBP), for the treatment of painful bone metastases. This agent showed a superior biodistribution as a bone-seeking agent in normal mice when compared with Re-HEDP. In this study, we evaluated the therapeutic effects of Re-MAG3-HBP using an animal model of bone metastasis. In the rats treated with Re-HEDP, tumor growth was comparable to that in untreated rats. In contrast, when Re-MAG3-HBP was administered, tumor growth was significantly inhibited. Allodynia induced by bone metastasis was attenuated by treatment with Re-MAG3-HBP or Re-HEDP, but Re-MAG3-HBP tended to be more effective. These results indicate that Re-MAG3-HBP could be useful as a therapeutic agent for the palliation of metastatic bone pain.

With increasing x, the spectral intensity of the Ce 4f derived states near the Fermi level decreases and new 4f derived spectral feature appears at a higher binding energy. The Rh 4d-derived states, on the other hand, are not significantly changed by the substitution. New 4f-derived states have incoherent nature, which is responsible for the collapse of the semiconducting state for x0.02.

We have observed a quasi-particle band which has a energy disepersion of 30 meV in the Ce 4 on-resonance spectra. The result suggests that although the Ce 4 spectra are dominated by the localized/correlated character being dominant, the small itinerant component is responsible for the superconductivity in this compound.
