Assessment of individual external doses from ambient dose equivalents is used for predictive and retrospective assessments where personal dosimeters are not applicable. However, it tends to contain more errors than assessment by personal dosimetry due to various parameters. Therefore, in order to accurately assess the individual dose from ambient dose equivalents, a model that estimates effective doses considering life patterns and the shielding effects by buildings and vehicles, were developed in this study. The model parameters were examined using robust datasets of environmental radiation measured in the areas affected by the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station accident in 2020 to 2021. The accuracy of the model was validated by comparison with 106 daily personal doses measured in Fukushima Prefecture in 2020. The measured personal dose was well reproduced by the model-estimated effective dose, showing that the model can be used to assess the individual exposure dose, similar to personal dosimetry. Furthermore, this model is an effective tool for radiation protection, as it can estimate the individual dose predictively and retrospectively by using environmental radiation data.

Simple and rapid methods to evaluate the radioactivity concentrations are required for the radioactive waste generated from research facilities in the Japan Atomic Energy Agency to dispose of in a near-surface repository. In order to establish the methods to evaluate the radioactivity concentrations of miscellaneous solid waste generated from research and testing reactors, we collected and analyzed samples from miscellaneous solid waste generated by the decommissioning of JPDR (Japan Power Demonstration Reactor). In this report, we reported the analytical data determined in fiscal 2014 ($$^{137}$$Cs and $$^{93}$$Mo) and summarized them with the radioactivity concentrations obtained in the past as basic data to consider the evaluation method of radioactivity concentrations in the stored waste taken from JPDR.

Monju core physics test analysis with various nuclear data libraries

no journal, ,

The previous Monju core physics test is analyzed using a JAEA's neutronics calculation system with various nuclear data libraries, JENDL-3.2, JENDL-3.3, JENDL/AC-2008, JEFF-3.1, and ENDF/B-VII. Analyzed the core characteristics are fixed absorber reactivity worth, fuel sub-assembly reactivity worth, coolant reactivity worth, burn-up coefficient, and reaction rate. It is found that the C/E (calculation over measurement) values are within experimental errors for the fixed absorber reactivity worth and the fuel sub-assembly reactivity worth. But that for the burn-up reactivity coefficient is around the experimental error and shows a tendency of overestimation. Further investigation is ongoing to improve the accuracy of the system. Obtained knowledge and experience will be reflected in the next physics test analyzes.

Investigation on distribution of radioactive substances in Fukushima, 13; Evaluation of indoor dose reduction factor based on air dose rate measurement

Sato, Rina; Yoshimura, Kazuya; Sanada, Yukihisa; Sato, Tetsuro*; Mori, Tsubasa*; Takagi, Marie*

no journal, ,

In order to accurately estimate air dose rates of indoors with a high percentage of stay, indoor dose reduction factor was evaluated based on indoor and outdoor air dose rate measurements, taking into account air dose rates due to natural radionuclides. The measurements were conducted on wooden and concrete buildings in 2021 in municipalities with specified reconstruction and revitalization base. Indoor air dose rates were estimated from outdoor air dose rates using representative values of the evaluated indoor dose reduction factors. As a result, indoor air dose rates were estimated more accurately when the effect of natural radionuclides was taken into account, because the error indicators were smaller than those in the case without the effect of natural radionuclides.
