Prototype fast breeder reactor Monju is the first power generating FBR in Japan which is a plant for research & development to demonstrate reliability of fast breeder reactor as a power plant and establish sodium handling technology etc. Monju started construction in 1985, achieved initial criticality in 1994 and attained 40% output in 1995, however the sodium leak accident occurred during the test operation at the end of that year. Since then, the plant remained shut down for 12 years. In this subject, our efforts for the restart of this long term shut down plant will be presented.

The fast breeder reactor "MONJU" (hereafter "MONJU") is equipped with the system called "MONJU Integrated Data Acquisition System (MIDAS)" to effectively acquire, accumulate and analyze relevant real-plant process data gathered from the system start-up test. At present, "MONJU" has been suspended due to a sodium leak accident that occurred in 1995. However, the main part of remodeling construction to prevent sodium leaks was completed in May, 2007 and "MONJU" is highly expected to resume its operations, stepping into the practical testing phase. In this situation, "MIDAS" has been replaced with an upgraded version before the system start-up test was resumed. This paper describes overview of the new "MIDAS" system.

The construction program of the prototype FBR MONJU which has suspended since the sodium leak accident in 1995 has recently restarted and is under construction to implement various improvements. The test run program following the reconstruction work could roughly divided into two phases of Function test and System start-up test (SST). The requirements, test items and the schedule of the function test program of MONJU have been discussed.
