Plant system study of France-Japan common concept on Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor

This paper provides an overview of plant system studies to establish a common technical view for Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor concept between France and Japan based on ASTRID600 and the new concept with downsized output called ASTRID150. One of important issues on a reactor structure design is to enhance seismic resistance to be tolerable against strong earthquake such that postulated in Japan. A concept of High Frequency Design is shared, and the design options related to HFD have been examined and design recommendations are established. In addition, this paper include results of studies for a steam generator, a decay heat removal system, a fuel handling system and a containment vessel.

We have developed a methodology for optimizing the monitoring locations of radiation air dose-rate monitoring. For the method, we use a Gaussian mixture model to identify the representative locations among multiple environmental variables, such as elevation and land-cover types. Next, we use a Gaussian process model to capture and estimate the heterogeneity of air-dose rates across the domain. Our results have shown that this approach allows us to select monitoring locations in a systematic manner such that the heterogeneity of air dose rates is captured by the minimal number of monitoring locations.

By convention radiation measurements from vehicle-borne surveys are converted to the dose rate at 1 m above the ground in the absence of the vehicle. To improve the accuracy of the converted results from vehicle-borne surveys, we investigated combining measurements from two detectors mounted on the vehicle at different heights above the ground. A dual-detector setup was added to a JAEA monitoring car and compared against hand-held survey meter measurements in Fukushima Prefecture. The dose rates obtained by combining measurements from two detectors were within $$pm$$20% of the hand-held reference measurements. The combined results from the two detectors were more accurate than those from either the roof-mounted detector, or the detector inside the vehicle, taken alone. When radiocesium is deficient on a road compared to the adjacent land, mounting detectors high on vehicles yields dose rates closer to the values adjacent to the road. We also investigated mounting heights for vehicle-borne detectors using Monte Carlo $$gamma$$-ray simulations.

In recent years gas-phase chemical studies assisted by physical pre-separation allowed for the productions and investigations of fragile single molecular species of superheavy elements. The latest highlight is the formation of very volatile hexacarbonyl compound of element 106, Sg(CO)$$_{6}$$. Following this success, second-generation experiments were performed to measure the first bond dissociation energy between the central metal atom and the surrounding ligand. The method using a tubular decomposition reactor was developed and successfully applied to short-lived Mo(CO)$$_{6}$$, W(CO)$$_{6}$$, and Sg(CO)$$_{6}$$.

The high-performance computer system Helios which is located at The Computational Simulation Centre (CSC) in The International Fusion Energy Research Centre (IFERC) started its operation in January 2012 under the Broader Approach (BA) agreement between Japan and the EU. The Helios system has been used for magnetised fusion related simulation studies in the EU and Japan and has kept high average usage rate. As a result, the Helios system has contributed to many research products in a wide range of research areas from core plasma physics to reactor material and reactor engineering. This project review gives a short catalogue of domestic simulation research projects. First, we outline the IFERC-CSC project. After that, shown are objectives of the research projects, numerical schemes used in simulation codes, obtained results and necessary computations in future.

Conditions of the production and decomposition of hexacarbonyl complexes of short-lived Mo and W isotopes were investigated to study thermal stability of the heaviest group 6 hexacarbonyl complex Sg(CO)$$_6$$. A tubular flow reactor was tested to decompose the hexacarbonyl complexes and to extract the first bond dissociation energies. A silver was found to be the most appropriate reaction surface to study the decomposition of the group 6 hexacarbonyl. It was found that the surface temperature at which the decomposition occurred was correlated to the first bond dissociation energy of Mo(CO)$$_6$$ and W(CO)$$_6$$, indicating that the first bond dissociation energy of Sg(CO)$$_6$$ could be determined with this technique.

The most distinctive feature of the superconducting magnet system for JT-60SA is the optimized coil structure in terms of the space utilization as well as the highly accurate coil manufacturing, thus meeting the requirements for the steady-state tokamak research: A conceptually new outer inter-coil structure separated from the casing is introduced to the toroidal field coils to realize their slender shape, allowing large-bore diagnostic ports for detailed plasma measurements. A method to minimize the manufacturing error of the equilibrium-field coils has been established, aiming at the precise plasma shape/position control. A compact butt-joint has been successfully developed for the Central Solenoid, which allows an optimized utilization of the limited space for the Central Solenoid to extend the duration of the plasma pulse.

Rapid In situ synthesis of metal carbonyl complexes has been demonstrated using short-lived isotopes produced in nuclear fission and fusion reactions. The short-lived isotopes with high recoil energy directly react with carbon-monoxides and form carbonyl complexes. Only highly volatile complexes were fast transported in a gas stream to counting and chemistry devices. Short-lived Mo, Tc, Ru, Rh, W, Re, Os, and Ir were found to form volatile carbonyl complexes, while no volataile complex of Hf and Ta were detected. This technique has been applied to a chemical investigation of the superheavy element Sg (atomic number 106), and will be applicable to various fields of nuclear science with short-lived transition metal isotopes.

After plasma operation of the ITER reactor, irradiated radioactive dust will accumulate in the vacuum vessel (VV). The In Vessel Transporter (IVT) will be installed in the VV and remove the blanket modules for maintenance. The IVT will be carried back to the Hot Cell Facilities (HCF) after exchanging the blanket, and the IVT itself also needs maintenance. It is considered that the maintenance workers will be exposed to the irradiated radioactive dust attached to the IVT surface. In this study, dust contamination of the IVT is evaluated to assess exposure during maintenance work in the HCF. The IVT contamination scenario is assumed in the ITER project. From plasma shut down until maintenance is performed on the IVT will take 345 days under the ITER project assumption. Under this scenario, the effective dose rate from irradiated radioactive dust was calculated as an infinite plate for each nuclide. As a result, W-181 and Ta-182 were the dominant nuclides for the effective dose rate. If all dust is W-181 or Ta-182, the effective dose rate is about 400 $$mu$$Sv/h and 100 $$mu$$Sv/h respectively. Nevertheless, using the dose limit determined by the ITER project and the estimated maximum maintenance time, the effective dose rate limit was calculated to be 4.18 $$mu$$Sv/h under these limited conditions. To satisfy the dose rate limit, decontamination processes were assumed and the dose rate after decontamination was evaluated.

Oxygen thermochemistry of urania-rare earth system; UO$$_2$$-CeO$$_2$$

Collaborative study has been done on the properties of nuclear materials between the DOE and Japan and the oxygen potential of (U,Ce)O$$_2$$ was measured in this year. Experimental measurements of the oxygen potential were conducted on Ce=20% and 30% composition rates simulating Pu content in advanced MOX fuel in JAEA by gas equilibrium method where oxygen partial pressure in the atmosphere was controlled with mixing dry/wet Ar/H$$_2$$ gas. More than 100 data points were obtained in the O/M range of 1.945 $$sim$$ 2.000 at 1200$$^{circ}$$C, 1400$$^{circ}$$C and 1600$$^{circ}$$C. The experimental results were analyzed by the defect analysis and analytical equations were obtained to calculate O/M as functions of temperature and oxygen potential. From the comparison with that of (U,Pu)O$$_2$$, applicability of the same defect chemistry and S-style curve are common. Also, it is revealed that (U,Ce)O$$_2$$ requires evidently higher oxygen potential for the O/M.

A new superheavy element complex, a seaborgium carbonyl, has been successfully synthesized, and its adsorption property has been studied using a cryo-thermochromatography and $$alpha$$-detection apparatus COMPACT. Nuclear reaction products of short-lived $$^{265}$$Sg preseparated with a gas-filled recoil ion separator GARIS at RIKEN were directly injected into a gas cell filled with He/CO mixture gas, and chemical reaction products of volatile carbonyl complexes were trasported to COMPACT. The Sg carbonyl complex detected with COMPACT was found to be very volatile with adsorption enthalpy of $$-$$50 kJ/mol, from which we have concluded that this complex should be a Sg hexacarbonyl Sg(CO)$$_{6}$$. This is the first synthesis of organometallic compounds of transactinide elements for which only simple inorganic comounds have been synthesized so far.

The upgrade of the JT-60U magnet system to the superconducting coils (JT-60SA) is progressing as a satellite facility for ITER by Japan and EU in the BA agreement. All components of magnet system are now under manufacturing in mass production. The first superconducting EF conductor was manufactured in 2010 in Japan. First superconducting coil EF4 was manufactured in 2012. Other EF5 and EF6 coils shall be manufactured by 2013 to install temporally on the cryostat base before the assembly of the plasma vacuum vessel. CS model coil is fabricated to qualify all manufacturing process of Nb$$_{3}$$Sn conductor. The first TF conductor was manufactured in 2012. The cryogenic requirements for JT-60SA are about 9 kW at 4.5K. Each coil is connected through an in-cryostat feeder to the current leads located outside the cryostat in the CTB. A total of 26 HTS current leads are installed in the CTB. The manufacturing of the magnet system is in progress to provide components to assembly the Tokamak machine.

R&D for rail deployment equipment was performed for the ITER blanket remote handling system. The target torque for the automatic operation was investigated. The result shows that the 20% of the rated torque is adequate as the torque limitation for the automatic operation. A schedule for the procurement of the blanket remote handling system, which will be delivered to the ITER in 2020, was also shown.

Uranium and plutonium mixed oxide (U$$_{0.7}$$,Pu$$_{0.3}$$)O$$_{2-x}$$ which has been developed as a fast reactor fuel is nonstoichiometric compound. The stoichiometry significantly affects various properties. The relationship between oxygen potential and oxygen-to-metal (O/M) ratio has been investigated so far. The measurement results showed that it is essential to control oxygen partial pressure ($$P$$$$_{O2}$$) for holding constant O/M ratio in high temperature range. Therefore, properties of (U$$_{0.7}$$,Pu$$_{0.3}$$)O$$_{2-x}$$ were measured in $$P$$$$_{O2}$$-controlled atmosphere in this work. In this work, properties of O/M change, sintering and thermal expansion were investigated in $$P$$$$_{O2}$$-controlled atmosphere.
