Owing to the publication of the latest data about aircraft crashes by Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA), it was necessary to re-evaluate the probabilities of aircraft crashes for Nuclear Science Research Institute (NSRI). By using of the assessment method provided in "Regulatory Guide of the Assessment Standard for Probability of Airplane Crash on a Nuclear Power Reactor Facility", we re-evaluated the probabilities of aircraft crashes against the nuclear facilities in NSRI. As a result of the evaluations, the sum of the probabilities of aircraft crashes against Waste Treatment Facilities (maximum probability among all nuclear facilities in NSRI) is 5.68$$times$$10$$^{-8}$$ (times/(reactor $$cdot$$ year)) which is lower than 10$$^{-7}$$ (times/(reactor $$cdot$$ year)) that is the assessment criterion whether aircraft crashes is considered to be "anticipated external human induced events" in design basis or not.

JAEA-Review-2023-017.pdf:0.94MB

This report is a plan of research and development (R&D) on geosphere stability for long-term isolation of high-level radioactive waste (HLW) in Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), in fiscal year 2023. The objectives and contents in fiscal year 2023 are described in detail based on the JAEA 4th Medium- and Long-term Plan (fiscal years 2022-2028). In addition, the background of this research is described from the necessity and the significance for site investigation and safety assessment, and the past progress. The plan framework is structured into the following categories: (1) Development and systematization of investigation techniques, (2) Development of models for long-term estimation and effective assessment, (3) Development of dating techniques.

The JT-60SA project is a EU - JA satellite tokamak under Broader Approach in support of the ITER project. In-vessel coils are designed and assembled by JA. The resin-insulator is required to have a heat resistance against the baking temperature of vacuum vessel of $$sim$$200$$^{circ}$$C (40000 hour). Thus the assessment of the heat load is fundamental for the design of the coils. However, the estimation of the lifetime of resin-insulator under the high-temperature region has not been examined. In the present study, the estimation of the lifetime of seven candidate resin-insulators such as epoxy resin and cyanate-ester resin under the $$sim$$220$$^{circ}$$C temperature region have been performed for the current coils design. Weight reduction of the seven candidate insulators was measured at different heating times under 180$$^{circ}$$C, 200$$^{circ}$$C and 220$$^{circ}$$C environment using three thermostatic ovens, respectively. The reduction of the insulators has been used as input for Weibull-analysis towards Arrhenius-plot. Lifetime of the resins has been estimated for the first time at the high temperature region by the plot. Lifetime of the resin-insulators have been evaluated and discussed as well as the available temperature of the in-vessel coils.

Cs$$_{2}$$Si$$_{4}$$O$$_{9}$$ powder was synthesized by wet method using cesium carbonate powder and colloidal silica 40 wt.% suspension in H$$_{2}$$O as starting materials. The characteristic of Cs$$_{2}$$Si$$_{4}$$O$$_{9}$$ is investigated by using X-ray diffraction, Raman and Thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry. The structure of Cs$$_{2}$$Si$$_{4}$$O$$_{9}$$ was analyzed by Transmission Electron Microscope.
