The $$gamma$$-radiation has been investigated produced by cold neutron capture in an enriched $$^{62}$$Ni sample. The 315 $$gamma$$-rays have been placed in the $$^{63}$$Ni level scheme of which 272 placements are new. We have determined excitation energies with 0.2-0.8 keV error and branching ratios of 62 bound levels in $$^{63}$$Ni, including 30 new levels. The Q-value of the $$^{62}$$Ni (n,$$gamma$$) $$^{63}$$Ni reaction amounts to 6837.75 (18) keV. A large-scale shell-model calculation has been performed and the energies of the low-lying $$^{63}$$Ni states are successfully reproduced. A mean-field statistical model calculation has been also made by using a self-consistent interaction between the Hartree-Fock + BCS method and the statistical calculation. The calculation result is consistent with the experimental level density of $$^{63}$$Ni.

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the results of the third intercomparison exercise of external radiation dosimetry organized under the Regional Cooperative Agreement (RCA) in the East Asia region of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Twenty five laboratories from 16 member states participated in the exercise. Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI) and Japan Nuclear Cycle Development Institute (JNC) arranged the standard irradiation of the participants' dosimeters. The results of the measurements of the irradiated dosimeters for the determination of external doses were satisfactory for all participants, demonstrating good performance in their external dosimetry.

This annual report describes the activities of Department of Radiation Protection in Nuclear Science Research Institute in the fiscal year 2005. The report covers environmental monitoring around the facilities, radiation protection of workplace and workers, individual monitoring, maintenance of monitoring instruments, and research and development of radiation protection technologies, which were performed at Nuclear Science Research Institute, Tokai Research and Development Center, Japan Atomic Energy Agency. There were no occupational or public exposures exceeding the prescribed dose limits. No effluent releases were recorded exceeding the prescribed limits on the amount and concentration of radioactivity for gaseous release and liquid waste. As for the research and development activities, studies were conducted focusing mainly on the following themes: technological developments on operational radiation protection and establishment of calibration fields for various types of neutrons.

As one of the IAEA/RCA projects, three phases of personal dosimetry intercomparison programs had been conducted during the years of 1990 to 2004. The purpose of the program was to assess the ability of the personal dosimetry services in the RCA Member States and also to provide technical help in improving a performance of their dosimetry systems and in implementing the operational quantities recommended by ICRU. The purpose of this paper is to trace the history of and to present a summarized review of the results of the intercomparison programs. The trend of the phase-by-phase results showed that the quality of individual monitoring in most of the Member States has become dramatically improved to an acceptable level. There was a successful achievement and advancement over the 15 years effort.

no journal, ,

Prompt $$gamma$$-rays from the neutron capture reaction of Ni-62 have been measured by using the multiple prompt $$gamma$$-ray spectrometer, STELLA, installed at the Research Reactor, JRR-3, of Japan Atomic Energy Agency. A highly-excited level structure below the neutron separation energy of 6838 keV in Ni-63 has been reported, including 35 new levels and 272 new $$gamma$$-ray transitions. The experimentally observed level structure is compared and discussed with a shell model calculation and a Mean-field statistical model calculation.

A cold-neutron beam was irradiated on a Ni-62 sample at a JRR-3 guided beam facility in JAEA. Prompt $$gamma$$-rays from the neutron capture reaction were measured with a multiple $$gamma$$-ray spectrometer, STELLA. From the analysis of the prompt $$gamma$$-ray intensities, a thermal-neutron-capture cross section of Ni-62 has been derived.
