In the analysis of IAEA safeguards environmental samples, isotope ratios of ultra-trace amounts of uranium and plutonium in samples taken from nuclear facilities are determined to detect undeclared nuclear materials and activities. In order to keep and enhance the reliability of the measurement results, validation of analytical methods and estimation of measurement uncertainty in such ultra-trace analysis should be properly done in accordance with worldwide standards. In this paper, the current activities on achievement of QA/QC (quality assurance and quality control) and estimation of measurement uncertainty in the ultra-trace analysis at a clean chemistry laboratory (CLEAR) of JAEA are reported.

Times Cited Count:4 Percentile:33.9(Instruments & Instrumentation)A technique was developed to measure the angle-correlated neutron energy spectrum with the coincidence detection technique using a pencil-beam DT neutron source at the Fusion Neutronics Source (FNS) of the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA). Triple differential cross-sections of the Mn(n,2n) reaction were measured first, from which the total Mn(n,2n) reaction cross-section was deduced and compared with JENDL-3.3. The agreement was sufficient to prove the validity of the technique. With the present measuring technique, a complete measurement of a medium-heavy or heavy element such as manganese would become possible through several measurements, because the angle dependence of the emitted neutrons from it is normally weak. The technique will be a useful tool for measuring the angle-correlated neutron spectrum of light elements such as beryllium for investigation of their complicated nuclear reaction mechanism.

The latest version of JENDL High Energy File (JENDL/HE) and JENDL Photonuclear Data File (JENDL/PD) is being planed to be released as JENDL/HE-2007 and JENDL/PD-2007. In JENDL/HE-2007, nuclear data for about 100 nuclides, which are newly ecaluated and revised from JENDL/HE-2004 will be stored. The JENDL/PD-2007 will have nuclear data for about 170 nuclides.

JAEA (Japan Atomic Energy Agency) has been conducting the environmental sample analysis, which is one of the IAEA's safeguards measures. In the analysis, isotope ratios of ultra-trace amounts of nuclear materials (uranium and plutonium) in the samples taken from nuclear facilities are determined to detect "environmental signature" of undeclared nuclear materials and activities. In order to enhance the reliability of the measurement results, validation of analytical methods and estimation of uncertainty of measurement in such ultra-trace analysis are required at the level of worldwide standardization. In this presentation, the authors introduce the current activities and future perspectives of achievement of QA/QC (quality assurance and quality control) and the estimation of uncertainty as a member of the IAEA Network Analytical Laboratories for the environmental samples.
