Irradiation test about oxidation-resistant graphite in WWR-K research reactor

Graphite are used for the in-core components of HTGR, and it is desirable to enhance oxidation resistance to keep much safety margin. SiC coating is the candidate method for this purpose. JAEA and four Japanese graphite companies are studying to develop oxidation-resistant graphite. Neutron irradiation test was carried out by WWR-K reactor of INP of Kazakhstan through ISTC partner project. The total irradiation cycles of WWR-K operation was 10 cycles by 200 days. Irradiation temperature about 1473 K would be attained. The maximum fast neutron fluence (E $$>$$0.18 MeV) for the capsule irradiated at a central irradiation hole was preliminary calculated as 1.2$$times$$10$$^{25}$$/m$$^{-2}$$, and for the capsule at a peripheral irradiation hole as 4.2$$times$$10$$^{24}$$/m$$^{-2}$$. Dimension and weight of the irradiated specimens were measured, and outer surface of the specimens were observed by optical microscope. For the irradiated oxidation resistant graphite, out-of-pile oxidation test will be carried out at an experimental laboratory.

Future synchrotron light source using a 5-GeV energy recovery linac (ERL) is under proposal by our Japanese collaboration team, and we are conducting R&D efforts for that. We are developing high-brightness DC photocathode guns, two types of cryomodules for both injector and main superconducting (SC) linacs, and 1.3 GHz high CW-power RF sources. We are also constructing the Compact ERL (cERL) for demonstrating the recirculation of low-emittance, high-current beams using above-mentioned critical technologies.

A new beamline for a fundamental physics experiment is under construction at BL05 port in the Materials and Life Science Facility (MLF) at Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), this beamline is designed using novel techniques of neutron optics and it is termed "Neutron Optics and Physics". The beam from the moderator is deflected by multi-channel supermirrors and split into three branches for individual experiments. In this study, we have optimized the design of the beam optics and shields using the Monte Carlo simulation package PHITS. The neutron fluxes of beams are expected to be $$9.2 times 10^5/$$cm$$^2/mu$$str$$/$$s$$/$$MW, $$1.2 times 10^9/$$cm$$^2/$$s$$/$$MW, $$4.0 times 10^8/$$cm$$^2/$$s$$/$$MW, with polarization of 99.8%.

The performance of net-current free heliotron plasmas has been developed by findings of innovative operational scenarios in conjunction with an upgrade of the heating power and the pumping/fuelling capability in the Large Helical Device (LHD). Consequently, the operational regime has been extended, in particular, with regard to high density, long pulse length and high beta. Diversified studies in LHD have elucidated the advantages of net-current free heliotron plasmas. In particular, an internal diffusion barrier (IDB) by a combination of efficient pumping of the local island divertor function and core fuelling by pellet injection has realized a super dense core as high as 5$$times$$10$$^{20}$$ m$$^{-3}$$, which stimulates an attractive super dense core reactor. Achievements of a volume averaged beta of 4.5% and a discharge duration of 54 min with a total input energy of 1.6 GJ (490 kW on average) are also highlighted. The progress of LHD experiments in these two years is overviewed by highlighting IDB, high-beta and long pulse.

We have started the commissioning of the neutron scattering experiment instruments since May 2008 in MLF, J-PARC. Simultaneously, we have started the commissioning of the data acquisition and analysis software. Experimental users operate this software through the software framework which we have developed. The software framework was developed based on Python which is an object oriented script language. The system implemented with the software framework can seamlessly measure, analyze and visualize with some modules which are experimental control and data analysis. In this presentation, we report the process of the construction and the current status of the software.

Current status and future plan of the software framework in MLF computing environment

We have developed the software framework in MLF computing environment from 2006 to 2008. The software framework is the fundamental software for neutron and muon experimental instruments in J-PARC/MLF. Currently, the software framework is installed at 4D Space Access Neutron Spectrometer (BL01), IBARAKI Biological Crystal Diffractometer (BL03), Cold-Neutron Disk-Chopper Spectrometer (BL14), Engineering Materials Diffractometer (BL19) and High Intensity Total Diffractometer (BL21). The features of experimental control, analysis, visualization and authorization are already implemented in the software framework. In this year, we will start the development to introduce the feature of database. We will present the current status and future plan of the software framework.

The first neutron was produced on May 2008, the first muon was extracted on September 2008 and the operation for the first user program started on December 2008 in J-PARC/MLF. The beam power of proton are increasing from 4.3kW to 120kW, the number of the experimental instruments are increasing from 8 to 14. In addition, the constructions of new instruments were started in this year. Many users started the experiments in each instruments and measured the data. Under these situations, the requirements of the MLF computing environment are increased more and more. In this year, we provided the project management server, the trial distributed data processing system, the sample management system with database and Gigabit Ethernet backbone.
