The journal of Japanese Society of Neutron Science "Hamon" will publish a special issue of "Recovery from the earthquake" in August. Authors were asked to right the recovery of instruments and neutron guides. In this article, we review the damage and recovery process done in FY2011.

The moderator cell containing liquid hydrogen is made of stainless steel. The material irradiation lifetime is limited to 7 years due to irradiation brittleness. The survey and design for a renewal moderator cell were conducted with a view to domestic production by the JAEA. It was fabricated and replaced by a domestic company, and the replacement work was completed in February, 2006. Characteristic was measured after exchange, and it had the same performance as the moderator cell made in France, and succeeded in making to domestic production.

The neutron flux and energy spectrum from the renewed cold neutron source was measured at the C2-1 beam port in the guide hall of JRR-3. We confirmed that both the absolute flux of 210
n/m
s and the shape of energy spectrum were reproduced after the replacement of the liquid hydrogen tank. JAEA has a plan to increase cold neutron flux ten times as strong as that at present by introducing a new type of hydrogen tank and super mirror neutron guide in the next term.

The JRR-3 research reactor is a swimming pool type research reactor with nominal thermal power of 20 MW. The JRR-3 has several utilization facilities for irradiation tests, production of RI and provides thermal and cold neutrons for neutron beam experiments. Five neutron guides have been installed in order to transport thermal and cold neutrons from the reactor reflector to the beam hall. Two thermal neutron guides are approximately 60 m long and three cold neutron guides are 31-51 m long. JRR-3 and its several utilization facilities have suffered the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11 2011. The misalignment of neutron guides occurred. Since all neutron guides at JRR-3 have curved sections, the misalignment of neutron guides results in reduction of the strength and the shifting of the characteristic wavelength of transferred neutrons. In this presentation, the recovery of neutron guides from the earthquake and the current status of neutron guides at JRR-3 are reported.
