Practical guide on soil sampling, treatment, and carbon isotope analysis for carbon cycle studies

There is growing concern that recent rapid changes in climate and environment could have a significant influence on carbon cycling in terrestrial ecosystems (especially forest ecosystems) and could consequently lead to a positive feedback for global warming. The magnitude and timing of this feedback remain highly uncertain largely due to a lack of quantitative understanding of the dynamics of organic carbon stored in soils and its responses to changes in climate and environment. The tracing of radiocarbon (natural and bomb-derived $$^{14}$$C) and stable carbon ($$^{13}$$C) isotopes through terrestrial ecosystems can be a powerful tool for studying soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics. The primary aim of this guide is to promote the use of isotope-based approaches to improve our understanding of the carbon cycling in soils, particularly in the Asian region. The guide covers practical methods of soil sampling; treatment and fractionation of soil samples; preparation of soil samples for $$^{13}$$C (and stable nitrogen isotope, $$^{15}$$N) and $$^{14}$$C analyses; and $$^{13}$$C, $$^{15}$$N, and $$^{14}$$C measurements by the use of isotope ratio mass spectrometry and accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). The guide briefly introduces ways to report $$^{14}$$C data, which are frequently used for soil carbon cycling studies. The guide also reports results of a case study conducted in a Japanese forest ecosystem, as a practical application of the use of isotope-based approaches. This guide is mainly intended for researchers who are interested but are not experienced in this research field. The guide will hopefully encourage readers to participate in soil carbon cycling studies, including field works, laboratory experiments, isotope analyses, and discussions with great interest.

The pressure response of hydrogen bond in aluminous hydroxide $$delta$$-AlOOH, which is an important candidate for water carrier to the deep Earth in a subducting slab, was investigated using neutron diffraction under high pressure. The symmetrization of hydrogen bond in which hydrogen locates at the center between two oxygen atoms was observed directly for the first time. The present result indicates that the changes of mineral properties such as increase in bulk modulus and sound velocities, which were previously found, were induced by the symmetrization and disorder state that was also found at just below the symmetrization pressure. Even the symmetrization is a small change in the hydrogen location but it is playing an important role in determining the physical properties of minerals.

PLANET is a time-of-flight (ToF) neutron beamline dedicated to high-pressure and high-temperature experiments. The large six-axis multi-anvil high-pressure press designed for ToF neutron diffraction experiments enables routine data collection at high pressures and high temperatures up to 10 GPa and 2000 K, respectively. To obtain clean data, the beamline is equipped with the incident slits and receiving collimators to eliminate parasitic scattering from the high-pressure cell assembly. The high performance of the diffractometer for the resolution ($$Delta$$ $$d$$/$$d$$ $$sim$$ 0.6%) and the accessible $$d$$-spacing range (0.2-8.4 ${AA}$) together with low-parasitic scattering characteristics enables precise structure determination of crystals and liquids under high pressure and temperature conditions.

Technetium-99m ($$^{rm 99m}$$Tc) is used in radioactive medical diagonostic tests, for example as a radioactive tracer that medical equipment can detect in the human body. It is well suited to the role because it emits readily detectable 141 keV $$gamma$$ rays, and its half-life is 6.01 hours (meaning that about 94% of it decays to technetium-99 in 24 hours). There are at least 31 commonly used radiopharmaceuticals based on technetium-99m for imaging and functional studies of the brain, myocardium, thyroid, lungs, liver, gallbladder, kidneys, skeleton, blood, and tumors. Recent years, with the develop-ment of the Compton camera which can realize high position resolution, technetium isotopes emitting high energy $$gamma$$-rays are required. In this study, technetium-95m which emits some $$gamma$$ rays around 800 keV was produced by the $$^{95}$$Mo(p,n)$$^{rm 95m}$$Tc reaction.

In situ neutron diffraction measurements combined with the pulsed neutron source at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) were conducted on high-pressure polymorphs of deuterated portlandite (Ca(OD)$$_{2}$$) using a Paris-Edinburgh cell and a multi-anvil press. The atomic positions including hydrogen for the unquenchable high-pressure phase at room temperature (phase II') were first clarified. The bent hydrogen bonds under high pressure were consistent with results from Raman spectroscopy. The structure of the high-pressure and high-temperature phase (Phase II) was concordant with that observed previously by another group for a recovered sample. The observations elucidate the phase transition mechanism among the polymorphs, which involves the sliding of CaO polyhedral layers, position modulations of Ca atoms, and recombination of Ca-O bonds accompanied by the reorientation of hydrogen to form more stable hydrogen bonds.

We propose to use the radionuclide $$^{132}$$Cs as a tracer. $$gamma$$-ray energy of the most intense line from the decay of $$^{132}$$Cs is 668 keV, which is very near to that of the 662 keV from the decay of $$^{137}$$Cs, while the half-life of $$^{132}$$Cs is 6.5 d. $$^{132}$$Cs can be produced by nuclear reactions such as $$^{133}$$Cs(n,2n)$$^{132}$$Cs, $$^{133}$$Cs(r,n)$$^{132}$$Cs or $$^{132}$$Xe(p,n)$$^{132}$$Cs. The $$^{132}$$Cs tracer would be useful in the quantitative studies of radionuclide $$^{137}$$Cs contaminant in human, and in any experimental studies in the minimization of radionuclide $$^{137}$$Cs contamination in agricultural and stock farming products.

The radiation characteristics of image fiber and light guide fiber were evaluated to develop a high radiation resistant fiberscope for the fast reactor in-vessel observation. It is known that a pure silica core fiber has a high radiation resistance and radiation resistance is influenced with impurities in silica. Moreover it is necessary to change the clad material of the light guide fiber because that of the current light guide fiber is acrylate, which is weak against radiation. Hence the improved fibers consist of a pure silica core with 1,000 ppm OH and fluorine-doped silica clad. As a result of a $$gamma$$ irradiation test, we confirm that OH inhibits the generation of the precursor by $$gamma$$ irradiation. About the clad material, we confirmed that the transmission loss of the fluorine-doped silica clad fiber is smaller than that of the acrylate clad fiber. About the mechanical strength of a fiber, we confirmed that there is no weakening the strength of the fiber and no exfoliation of the coating from the glass. In this study, we discovered the fiber which consists of a pure silica core with 1,000 ppm OH and fluorine-doped silica clad has a high radiation resistance and it is possible to observe using this fiber under the 200 $$^{circ}$$C after 5$$times$$10$$^{5}$$ Gy irradiation.

Pressure responses of portlandite and H-D isotope effects on pressure-induced phase transitions

The pressure responses of portlandite and the isotope effect on the phase transition were investigated at room temperature from single-crystal Raman and IR spectra and from powder X-ray diffraction using diamond anvil cells under quasi-hydrostatic conditions in a helium pressure-transmitting medium. Phase transformation and subsequent peak broadening observed from the Raman and IR spectra of Ca(OH)$$_{2}$$ occurred at lower pressures than those of Ca(OD)$$_{2}$$. In contrast, no isotope effect was found on the volume and axial compressions observed from powder X-ray diffraction patterns. X-ray diffraction lines attributable to the high-pressure phase remained up to 28.5 GPa, suggesting no total amorphization in a helium pressure medium within the examined pressure region. These results suggest that the H-D isotope effect is engendered in the local environment surrounding H(D) atoms.

The $$^{12}$$C($$alpha$$,$$gamma$$)$$^{16}$$O reaction cross section plays an important role in stellar evolution at the stage of helium-burning. However, the cross section at low energy still has a large uncertainty mainly due to the poor determination of the ratio of $$E2$$ cross section to $$E1$$ one. Hence, we have installed new system to make a precise measurement of the cross section. In this experiment, we used the high efficiency anti-Compton NaI(Tl) spectrometers with a large S/N ratio, an intense pulsed $$alpha$$ beams, and the monitoring system of target thickness. With use of the system we succeeded in removing a background due to neutron and could clearly detect the $$gamma$$-ray from the $$^{12}$$C($$alpha$$,$$gamma$$)$$^{16}$$O reaction with high statistics. We determined the $$E1$$ and $$E2$$ cross section down to $$E_{rm{eff}} sim $$ 1.2 MeV, and thus obtained results are compared to recent theoretical calculations.

Recent progress in the energy recovery linac project in Japan

Future synchrotron light source using a 5-GeV energy recovery linac (ERL) is under proposal by our Japanese collaboration team, and we are conducting R&D efforts for that. We are developing high-brightness DC photocathode guns, two types of cryomodules for both injector and main superconducting (SC) linacs, and 1.3 GHz high CW-power RF sources. We are also constructing the Compact ERL (cERL) for demonstrating the recirculation of low-emittance, high-current beams using above-mentioned critical technologies.

$$E1$$ and $$E2$$ cross sections of the $$^{12}$$C$$(alpha,gamma_{0})^{16}$$O reaction using pulsed $$alpha$$ beams

We measured the $$gamma$$-ray angular distribution from $$^{12}$$C$$(alpha,gamma_{0})^{16}$$O to the ground state of $$^{16}$$O using a pulsed $$alpha$$ beam at $$E_{rm eff} = 1.6$$ and 1.4 MeV. True events of $$^{12}$$C$$(alpha,gamma_{0})^{16}$$O were discriminated from background events due to neutrons from $$^{13}$$C($$alpha,n$$)$$^{16}$$O with a time-of-flight method. The obtained $$gamma$$-ray spectrum with anti-Compton NaI(Tl) spectrometers showed a characteristic line shape from $$^{12}$$C$$(alpha,gamma_{0})^{16}$$O: the Doppler broadening and energy loss of $$alpha$$ particles in $$^{12}$$C targets. The astrophysical S factors for $$E1$$ and $$E2$$, $$S_{E1}(gamma_{0}:E_{rm eff})$$ and $$S_{E2}(gamma_{0}:E_{rm eff})$$, derived from the present cross sections are in excellent agreement with the values derived by $$R$$-matrix calculation of the $$beta$$-delayed $$alpha$$ spectrum of $$^{16}$$N, and by using the asymptotic normalization constant in the $$R$$-matrix fit.

The application of high pressure can induce dramatic changes in the physical properties of condensed matter. Diffraction experiments under high pressure provide precise structural information, which is fundamental to understand their origin. When in situ high pressure neutron diffraction becomes possible at J-PARC, further outstanding researches are expected such as crystal structure of hydrogen-bearing materials including hydrous minerals, order-disorder transitions of minerals, structure of light element liquid at high pressure, etc.. Conceptual designs of neutron optics and high pressure devices for J-PARC are introduced.

Interlaboratory comparison of positron annihilation lifetime measurements

So far no standard procedure for the positron annihilation lifetime (PAL) technique has been established. A lack of the standards has led to difficulty in ensuring the equivalency and reliability of data from different laboratories. As a first, we conducted an interlaboratory comparison of PAL measurements for metal, polymer and silica glass with agreed procedures for data recording and analysis. The PAL data recorded at different laboratories were analyzed with a single lifetime component for the metal sample and with three components for the others, respectively. Based on the results of the reported positron and ortho-positronium lifetimes, the possible sources of the uncertainties in the PAL measurements are discussed. To reduce the effect of scattered $$gamma$$ rays, a lead shield was placed between the detectors. The uncertainty was significantly decreased, signifying that placing lead shields between the detectors effectively reduced the false signals due to the scattered $$gamma$$ rays.

Interlaboratory comparison of positron annihilation lifetime measurements using synthetic fused silica and polycarbonate was conducted with the participation of 12 laboratories. By regulating procedures for the measurement and data analysis the uncertainties of the positron lifetimes obtained at different laboratories were significantly reduced in comparison with those reported in the past.

Future synchrotron light sources based on the energy-recovery linacs (ERLs) are expected to be capable of producing super-brilliant and/or ultra-short pulses of synchrotron radiation. Our Japanese collaboration team is making efforts for realizing an ERL-based hard X-ray source. We report recent progress in our R&D efforts.
