The Nuclear Fuel Cycle Engineering Laboratories conducts environmental radiation monitoring around the reprocessing plant in accordance with the "Safety Regulations for Reprocessing Plant of JAEA, Part IV: Environmental Monitoring". This report summarizes the results of environmental radiation monitoring conducted during the period from April 2022 to March 2023 and the results of dose calculations for the surrounding public due to the release of radioactive materials into the atmosphere and ocean. In the results of the above environmental radiation monitoring, many items were affected by radioactive materials emitted from the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant of Tokyo Electric Power Company, Incorporated (changed to Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc. on April 1, 2016), which occurred in March 2011. Also included as appendices are an overview of the environmental monitoring plan, an overview of measurement methods, measurement results and their changes over time, meteorological statistics results, radioactive waste release status, and an evaluation of the data which deviated of the normal range.

A plan to produce Lu with high purity by using enriched Yb samples with irradiation of deuteron beams in accelerators has been discussed. However, since the other Yb isotopes contained in the Yb sample interacts with deuterons, Lu isotopes other than Lu are produced as impurities. Since the purity of Lu is important for medical use, a method to evaluate the impurity of Lu has been required. In this study, we proposed a new method to estimate production yields of each Lu isotopes in Yb samples with arbitrary isotopic compositions by using excitation functions of Yb()Lu reactions and the particle transport calculation code PHITS. The method plays an important role in discussing the isotopic composition of enriched samples to produce high-purity Lu using accelerators.

Times Cited Count:2 Percentile:22.16(Physics, Multidisciplinary)We found anomalously large yields of Ga, Ga, Zn and Cu by neutron irradiation on a ZnO sample in a polyethylene shield. Neutron beams are generated from the Be() reaction for 50 MeV deuterons. The yields obtained were more than 20 times larger than those in the unshielded sample. On the other hand, the yields of Ga, Ga, Zn and Cu from a metallic Zn sample and the yields of Cu, Ni and Zn from the ZnO and Zn samples were almost insensitive to the shield conditions. This finding would provide us a unique capability of accelerator neutrons to simultaneously produce a large amount of several radioisotopes, including proton induced reaction products, by using a single sample. The experimental data were compared with the yields estimated by using the Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System and the result was discussed.

Mo was produced by Mo(,)Mo using neutrons with thermal energy up to about 40 MeV, provided by C(,). The Mo yield agrees with an estimated yield with the use of the latest data of C(,) and the evaluated cross section given in the JENDL. Based on this, a new calculation was carried out to produce Mo to seek for a good economical condition. Various conditions such as the MoO sample mass, the distance between the carbon target and the sample, the radius of the deuteron beam, and the neutron irradiation time were considered. The calculated Mo yield indicates that about 30% of the Mo demand in Japan can be fulfilled with a single accelerator. The elusion of Tc from the Mo twice per day would meet about 50% of the Mo demand.

JAEA has estimated the atmospheric releases of radionuclide during the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (FNPS1) accident by comparing measurements of air concentration of a radionuclide or its dose rate in the environment with the ones calculated by atmospheric transport and deposition model (ATDM). To improve our source term, we are trying to develop more sophisticated estimation method and use new information from severe accident analysis and observation data. As the first step of new trial, we used Cs/Cs ratios of inventories in FNPS1 reactors Unit 1 to 3 and those in surface deposition. By considering temporal change in Cs/Cs ratio of released plume and ATDM simulations, spatial distribution of Cs/Cs ratio in surface deposition was explained. This result can be used to specify from which reactor the dominant release occurred for each time period, and consequently provide useful information to severe accident analysis for the FNPS1 case.

The large six-axis multi-anvil high-pressure press designed for ToF neutron diffraction experiments enables routine data collection at high pressures and high temperatures up to 10 GPa and 2000 K, respectively. To obtain clean data, the beamline is equipped with the incident slits and receiving collimators to eliminate parasitic scattering from the high-pressure cell assembly. The high performance of the diffractometer for the resolution ( / 0.6%) and the accessible -spacing range (0.2-8.4 ) together with low-parasitic scattering characteristics enables precise structure determination of crystals and liquids under high pressure and temperature conditions.

Times Cited Count:13 Percentile:64.07(Physics, Multidisciplinary)We have for the first time demonstrated that the therapeutic nuclide of Cu produced by Zn(,)Cu has highest radionuclide purity compared to previous ones. We measured a -ray spectrum of the reaction product produced by bombarding an enriched Zn sample with neutrons with a HPGe detector. The neutrons were obtained by C(,) using 41 MeV deuterons provided from Takasaki Ion Accelerators for Advanced Radiation Application of Japan Atomic Energy Agency. Relative production yields of impurity radionuclides such as Zn to Cu are extremely low, which allow us to chemically separate Cu from an irradiated Zn sample with a few steps and to reuse high cost an enriched Zn sample. The present result strongly suggest that the Zn(,)Cu reaction is the most promising route to produce high quality Cu and could solve a longstanding problem of establishing an appropriate production method of Cu.

Times Cited Count:10 Percentile:33.32(Materials Science, Multidisciplinary)The pressure responses of portlandite and the isotope effect on the phase transition were investigated at room temperature from single-crystal Raman and IR spectra and from powder X-ray diffraction using diamond anvil cells under quasi-hydrostatic conditions in a helium pressure-transmitting medium. Phase transformation and subsequent peak broadening observed from the Raman and IR spectra of Ca(OH) occurred at lower pressures than those of Ca(OD). In contrast, no isotope effect was found on the volume and axial compressions observed from powder X-ray diffraction patterns. X-ray diffraction lines attributable to the high-pressure phase remained up to 28.5 GPa, suggesting no total amorphization in a helium pressure medium within the examined pressure region. These results suggest that the H-D isotope effect is engendered in the local environment surrounding H(D) atoms.

Although this system is expected to have line nodes in its superconducting order parameter, we have observed spin resonance at the same scattering vector as that appeared in the -wave iron-based superconductors without line nodes. Moreover, the resonance enhancement, which can be a measure of the area of sign reversal between the hole and electron Fermi surfaces (FSs), is comparable to those without line nodes. These facts indicate that the sign reversal between the FSs is still dominant in this system, and the line nodes should create only limited area of sign-reversal on a single FS. Hence the system can hold higher Tc than the other iron-based superconductors with nodal symmetry, such as LaFePO and KFeAs ( 10 K).

Future synchrotron light source using a 5-GeV energy recovery linac (ERL) is under proposal by our Japanese collaboration team, and we are conducting R&D efforts for that. We are developing high-brightness DC photocathode guns, two types of cryomodules for both injector and main superconducting (SC) linacs, and 1.3 GHz high CW-power RF sources. We are also constructing the Compact ERL (cERL) for demonstrating the recirculation of low-emittance, high-current beams using above-mentioned critical technologies.

The laser pulse energy is 1.7 J, duration is 34 fs, and intensity is 310Wcm. The amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) has the intensity contrast ratio of 410. The conversion efficiency from laser energy into proton kinetic energies of 3% is achieved, which is comparable or even higher than those achieved in the previous works with nanometer-thick targets and the ultrahigh contrast laser pulses (10).
