Of the 463 strains that we isolated, 107 (23.1%) produced the siderophores. We found $$^{137}$$Cs and Mn desorption concomitant with Al and Fe desorption. These results suggest that root endophytes of $$^{137}$$Cs accumulator plant produce siderophores, resulting in the desorption of $$^{137}$$Cs from the contaminated soil collected at Fukushima, Japan.

The atomic-scale structure of KNbO$$_3$$ nanopowder synthesized by solvothermal method has been studied using high-energy X-ray diffraction, Rietveld refinement, and the atomic pair-distribution function (PDF) technique. It was found that the local structure of KNbO$$_3$$ nanoparticles deviates from the average structure. The local structure was found to be rhombohedral structure though the average structure was tetragonal structure. The rhombohedral distortion of NbO$$_6$$ octahedra was maintained in the annealed sample.

The number of research reactors in the world is decreasing because of their aging. However, the planning to introduce the nuclear power plants is increasing in Asian countries. In these Asian countries, the key issue is the human resource development for operation and management of nuclear power plants after constructed them, and also the necessity of research reactor, which is used for lifetime extension of LWRs, progress of the science and technology, expansion of industry use, human resources training and so on, is increasing. From above backgrounds, the Neutron Irradiation and Testing Reactor Center began to discuss basic concept of a multipurpose low-power research reactor for education and training, etc. This design study is expected to contribute not only to design tool improvement and human resources development in the Neutron Irradiation and Testing Reactor Center but also to maintain and upgrade the technology on research reactors in nuclear power-related companies. This report treats the activities of the working group from July 2010 to June 2011 on the multipurpose low-power research reactor in the Neutron Irradiation and Testing Reactor Center and nuclear power-related companies.

A crossed photon-atom beam apparatus has been constructed for absolute measurement of total photoionization cross sections of isolated and neutral metallic atoms. Using this apparatus, measurements on Ba and Eu atoms have been made at their 4d giant resonance regions 110-140 eV and 140-180 eV, respectively. The target atom density was determined using the deposition rate on a quartz crystal sensor and the average velocity of the atoms obtained by a time-of-flight method combined with a pulsed electron gun. The number of photons was determined with use of a double ion chamber. The comparison of the measured cross-section values with previous experimental and theoretical results is reasonable, indicating that the crossed photon-atom beam method is fairly promising technique.

Here we report the new features and improvements in our latest release of the H-Invitational Database, a comprehensive annotation resource for human genes and transcripts. H-InvDB, originally developed as an integrated database of the human transcriptome based on extensive annotation of large sets of fulllength cDNA (FLcDNA) clones, now provides annotation for 120 558 human mRNAs extracted from the International Nucleotide Sequence Databases (INSD), in addition to 54 978 human FLcDNAs, in the latest release H-InvDB. We mapped those human transcripts onto the human genome sequences (NCBI build 36.1) and determined 34 699 human gene clusters, which could define 34 057 protein-coding and 642 non-protein-coding loci; 858 transcribed loci overlapped with predicted pseudogenes.

Tokamak and spherical tokamak research in Japan

Takase, Yuichi*; Kikuchi, Mitsuru; Maekawa, Takashi*; Matsukawa, Makoto; Nagata, Masayoshi*; Nishio, Satoshi; Ono, Yasushi*; Sato, Konosuke*; Tobita, Kenji

Japanese tokamak and spherical tokamak (ST) research programs are described. Tokamak research will focus on steady state high($$beta$$$$_{N}$$ = 3.5-5.5) research on JT-60SA (formerly NCT) in support of ITER and DEMO. JT-60SA will also serve as the Satellite Tokamak under the JA-EU Broader Approach framework. ST research has been reorganized as the All-Japan ST Research Program, aiming for creative and innovative research focused on ultra-high and ultra-long pulse regimes. Results of plasma start-up, RF heating, and plasma merging reconnection experiments are summarized. Prospects of contribution of low aspect ratio tokamaks to fusion energy development, are presented.
