Upgrade of beam current in the Linac of Ibaraki Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (iBNCT) is one of the most important requirements to realize clinical trial. By 2018, the measurement of the produced neutrons characteristics and the neutron irradiation experiment for living cells have been done by producing 8-MeV proton beam current at the beryllium target with average current up to 2 mA. In order to satisfy the original clinical trial conditions, 5 mA average beam current is required at the target. For this goal, peak beam current extracted from the ion source should be increased to 60 mA from the present 30 mA with duty factor up to more than 10% (pulse width up to 1 ms and repetition rate up to more than 100 Hz). Stability of the peak current in the macro pulse is also important for the clinical application.

A high-radiation resistant optical fiber has been developed in order to investigate the interiors of the reactor pressure vessels and the primary containment vessels at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. The tentative dose rate in the reactor pressure vessels is assumed to be up to 1 kGy/h. We developed a radiation resistant optical fiber consisting of a 1000 ppm hydroxyl doped pure silica core and 4 % fluorine doped pure silica cladding. We attempted to apply the optical fiber to remote imaging technique by means of fiberscope. The number of core image fibers was increased from 2000 to 22000 for practical use. The transmissive rate of infrared images was not affected after irradiation of 1 MGy. No change in the spatial resolution of the view scope by means of image fiber was noted between pre- and post-irradiation. We confirmed the applicability of the probing system, which consists of a view scope using radiation-resistant optical fibers.

We are developing a linac dedicated to the muon acceleration. It enables us to measure the muon anomalous magnetic moment with an accuracy of 0.1 ppm and search for electric dipole moment with a sensitivity of 10 cm to explore beyond Standard Model of elementary particle physics. As a first step for demonstration of the muon acceleration, we are developing the source of slow muon with which RFQ acceleration is conducted. This paper describes status of these developments.

The proton linac installed in the Ibaraki Neutron Medical Research Center is used for production of the intense neutron flux for the Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT). The linac consists of the 3-MeV RFQ and the 8-MeV DTL. Design average beam current is 10mA. Target is made of Beryllium. First neutron production from the Beryllium target was observed at the end of 2015 with the low intensity beam as a demonstration. After the observation of neutron production, a lot of improvement s was carried out in order to increase the proton beam intensity for the real beam commissioning. The beam commissioning has been started on May 2016. The status of the commissioning is summarized in this report.

We are developing a muon linac for the measurement of the muon anomalous magnetic moment and search for the muon electric dipole moment to explore beyond the Standard Model of elementary particle physics. This muon linac accelerate from room temperature to 212 MeV with normalized transverse emittances of about 1.5 mm mrad. The muon linac consists of an ultra-slow muon source, a radio frequency quadrupole (RFQ) linac, an inter-digital H-mode drift tube linac (IH-DTL), a disk and washer coupled cavity linac (DAW CCL), and disk loaded structure (DLS) traveling-wave linac. In this paper, the status of the muon linac development, especially, the beam dynamics simulation is descried.

Two RF-deflecting cavities as a chopper and a beam scraper have been used in the MEBT1 between a 324 MHz RFQ and a 50-MeV DTL of the J-PARC Linac. We replaced with a newly fabricated RF chopper to decrease beam loss for the operation with 50 mA. We installed two new scrapers to absorb the higher power of the deflected beam by the RF chopper. This paper describes the RF chopper system and beam irradiation test results of the scraper.

A high-radiation resistant optical fiber has been developed in order to investigate the interiors of the reactor pressure vessels and the primary containment vessels of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. The radiation resistance of an optical fiber was improved by increasing the amount of hydroxyl up to 1000 ppm in pure silica fiber. The improved image fiber consists of common cladding and a large number of fiber cores made from pure silica that contains 1000 ppm hydroxyl. The transmissive rate of an infrared image was not affected after the irradiation of 1 MGy. We have developed the fiber-coupled LIBS system to detect plasma emission efficiently in near-infrared region. In addition, we have performed a ray dose rate measurement using an optical fiber of which scintillator is attached to the tip. As a result, the concept of applicability of a probing system using the high-radiation resistant optical fibers has been confirmed.

Two RF-deflecting cavities as a chopper and a beam scraper have been used in the MEBT between a 324 MHz RFQ and a 50-MeV DTL of the J-PARC Linac. We plan to increase a peak beam current up to 50 mA by replacing an ion source and a RFQ after the summer shutdown in 2014. Beam loss occurs in the RF chopper for the 50 mA operation. Moreover, the beam scraper cannot fully stand the beam load with 50 mA, 0.5 ms, 3 MeV, and 25 Hz. We have studied the new RF chopper cavity by using HFSS code and the tandem scraper system with two scrapers.

In J-PARC linac, a project for energy and intensity upgrade has been progressed using 50 mA RFQ(Radio-Frequency-Quadrupole) linac cavity. Because the RFQ had already fabricated, test stand for its performance test was newly produced. In the test stand, we designed and fabricated the monitoring system including beam current monitors for the beam transmission measurement and the beam phase monitors for the energy measurement. We will refer the detail of the monitoring system and the data obtained during the performance test. New testing devices are also mentioned.

The beam operation of J-PARC linac was suspended until December 2011 due to the damage by the Tohoku earthquake in March 2011. After resumed the operations, we measured the residual radiation along with the beam line during a short interval. Because the higher residual radiation was detected at the surface of drift tube linac (DTL) cavity by radiation survey, we installed the scintillation beam loss monitors (BLM) at the points where the higher radiation was detected to understand the cause of the radiation. Even the DTL section is low energy part of the linac, fine structure of the beam loss was observed by the scintillation BLM. And we measured the beam loss occurred at the DTL with the parameters of beam orbit and cavity settings. Also, the BLM is employed for the linac tuning. In this paper, the result of the radiation measurement and beam loss signals obtained by the scintillation BLMs are presented.

Times Cited Count:15 Percentile:68.00(Physics, Nuclear)We performed a high-power test of a new radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ II) for the J-PARC linac. RFQ II was developed as a spare RFQ because the operating J-PARC RFQ has suffered from a sparking problem. First, the conditioning of RFQ II was carried out; after 50 h of conditioning, RFQ II became very stable with a nominal power and duty of 330 kW and 3%, respectively. Next the thermal properties were measured because the resonant frequency of RFQ II is tuned by changing the temperature of the cooling water. The frequency response was measured and compared to finite-element method simulation results, confirming that the simple two-dimensional model reproduces the experimental data well. The differences in the field distribution with changes in the rf loading and the cooling-water temperature were also measured, and no serious field distortion was observed. Therefore, we conclude that RFQ II can perform well as a high-power rf cavity.

In this paper, we will report recent topics about J-PARC RFQs. First, the operating RFQ (RFQ I) have been recovered from the long shutdown due to the earthquake. This RFQ have been suffered from breakdown problem since 2008, therefore we have been developing a back-up RFQ (RFQ II). In April 2012, the high power test was successfully performed. It was confirmed to be able to stably operate at nominal power and duty factor (333 kW and 3%). Finally, we are fabricating a new RFQ for the beam-current upgrade of the J-PARC linac (RFQ III). The brazing of the first unit will be done in this September. The status of these RFQs are described.

Two RF-deflecting cavities as the chopper have been used in the MEBT between a 324 MHz RFQ and a 50-MeV DTL of the J-PARC Linac. A fast rise/fall time of the pulse is a fundamental requirement to minimize any beam losses due to insufficient deflection to some beam bunches during the transient time. We have studied the RF chopper cavity to speed up the transient time. This paper describes the design of the new RF chopper by using HFSS code.

The in-vessel gamma dose rate was measured in the experimental fast reactor Joyo to evaluate the activation of reactor structural components and the radiation exposure of the fiber scope used for in-vessel visual inspection. The measurement system, which requires a wide sensitivity range and high durability in a high-temperature environment, was specifically developed for use in the sodium cooled fast reactor. Using this system, the in-vessel gamma dose rate with cooling times of 450 and 720 days after reactor shutdown was measured in Joyo, which has been operated for 71,000 hours over approximately 30 years. The gamma dose rate was calculated using QAD-CGGP2 code with the gamma source intensity obtained by the ORIGEN2 code. The neutron flux used as input to the ORIGEN2 was evaluated by the Joyo dosimetry method. The ratio between the calculated and experimental values ranged from 1.1 to 2.4, confirming the accuracy of gamma dose rate and component activation calculation.

Cement-type materials that are used for supports or grouting at high-level radioactive waste disposal facilities leach into the groundwater and create a highly alkaline environment. Of concern in highly alkaline environments are the alteration of bentonite used as buffers or backfill materials, and of surrounding rock mass, and the increased uncertainty regarding the provision of performance of the disposal system over a long period of time. In this study, to reduce the quantity of cement-type materials that cause highly alkaline environments, technical feasibility of the support structure including the materials which considered the long-term performance of the HLW disposal system are discussed by using knowledge and technology accumulated in JAEA and Shimizu Construction. Moreover, based on the results, the problems remained in the application to the future HLW disposal institution are summarized.
