Effect of water activity on the mechanical glass transition and dynamical transition of bacteria

The purpose of this study was to clarify the glass transition behavior of bacteria ($$Cronobacter sakazakii$$) as a function of water activity ($$a_{rm w}$$). Mechanical relaxation was investigated at 298 K, and the mechanical $$a_{rm wc}$$ ($$a_{rm w}$$ at which mechanical glass transition occurs at 298 K) was determined to be 0.667. Temperature-dependency of mean square displacement was investigated by inelastic neutron scattering. From the linear fitting, two dynamical transition temperatures (low and high-$$T_{rm ds}$$) were determined. There was a minor effect of $$a_{rm w}$$ on the low-$$T_{rm ds}$$ except for the anhydrous sample. The high-$$T_{rm ds}$$ largely increased with the decrease in $$a_{rm w}$$. The dynamical $$a_{rm wc}$$determined by high-$$T_{rm ds}$$ (0.688) was slightly higher than the mechanical $$a_{rm wc}$$ because of the difference in the measurement time-scale. The high-$$T_{rm ds}$$ was converted to the glass transition temperature ($$T_{rm g}$$), and anhydrous $$T_{rm g}$$ was estimated to be 411 K. Bacterial inactive-active transition was discussed according to the glass transition behavior.

The MMX InfraRed Spectrometer (MIRS) is an imaging spectrometer on board of MMX JAXA mission. MIRS is built at LESIA-Paris Observatory in collaboration with four other French laboratories, collaboration and financial support of CNES and close collaboration with JAXA and MELCO. The instrument is designed to fully accomplish MMX's scientific and measurement objectives. MIRS will remotely provide near-infrared spectral maps of Phobos and Deimos containing compositional diagnostic spectral features that will be used to analyze the surface composition and to support the sampling site selection. MIRS will also study Mars atmosphere, in particular to spatial and temporal changes such as clouds, dust and water vapor.

The position dependence of the scattered intensity in the time-of-flight backscattering spectrometer DNA was investigated. A periodic structure for both vertical (pixel) and horizontal (PSD) directions was observed. The solar slit and over-bending of an analyzer crystal is discussed as a possible origin of the modulation in the intensity. We have developed software program for the systematic correction of the position-dependent intensity and offset energy for the elastic peak. This corrects the deviation from the true scattering intensity and improve the quality of the data, which includes the energy resolution.

Quartz cell for a backscattering spectrometer

We developed a quartz double cylindrical sample cell optimized for a backscattering neutron spectrometer, especially for BL02 (DNA), MLF in J-PARC. A quartz glass tube, with one end closed, is shaved to obtain a wall thickness of 0.55 mm. The inner tube is properly centered using a protrusion into the outer tube such that the interstice between the outer and inner tubes keeps constant. This quartz cell can be used for samples that should not be in contact with the aluminum surface. We verified cell's background effect between the quartz cell and Al cell by QENS measurements using D$$_{2}$$O buffer. The elastic intensity profiles of the buffer in a low Q region were identical between both quartz cell and Al cell (A1070). In a high Q region, however, the profiles were different caused by the first sharp diffraction peak of quartz glass. For this region the data should be analyzed by consideration of absorption correction and diffraction in individual thickness of quartz cell.

As a general overview of the research and development of a High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor (HTGR) in JAEA, this book describes the achievements by the High Temperature Engineering Test Reactor (HTTR) on the designs, key component technologies such as fuel, reactor internals, high temperature components, etc., and operational experience such as rise-to-power tests, high temperature operation at 950$$^{circ}$$C, safety demonstration tests, etc. In addition, based on the knowledge of the HTTR, the development of designs and component technologies such as high performance fuel, helium gas turbine and hydrogen production by IS process for commercial HTGRs are described. These results are very useful for the future development of HTGRs. This book is published as one of a series of technical books on fossil fuel and nuclear energy systems by the Power Energy Systems Division of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers.

J-PARC, Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex provides short pulse proton beam at a repetition rate 25 Hz and the maximum power is expected to be 1 MW. Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) has 23 neutron beam ports and 21 instruments have already been operated or under construction / commissioning. There are 6 inelastic / quasi-elastic neutron scattering spectrometers and the complementary use of these spectrometers will open new insight for life science.

X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) spectroscopy was employed to investigate the electronic and magnetic structures of the bilayers of a C$$_{60}$$-Co compound and Ni. A few -several nm thick C$$_{60}$$-Co compound layers on the Ni(111) surface are found to show intense XMCD signals attributed to the localized Co d-spins only with the remanent magnetization of Ni layer. It is suggested that the region of the C$$_{60}$$-Co compound within 3 nm from the interface is ferromagnetically coupled with Ni due to the indirect exchange interaction mediated by C$$_{60}$$, probably relevant to the interlayer charge transfer.

Hydroxymaleimide was irradiated in N$$_{2}$$-saturated 2-propanol solutions by high-energy heavy ions over a wide range of LET values. The differential G-values of the degradation of hydroxymaleimide by irradiation with the heavier ions were lower than those of the lighter ions for the same LET value. It was opposite result obtained in the air-saturated system. The degradation efficiency was 1.5 times higher, when the dose rate was 1/10 times lower. When irradiated at an LET value lower than 8 eV/nm, the G-values converged to a value less than that obtained by $$gamma$$-irradiation.

Electronic and spin states of the codeposited C$$_{60}$$-Co films with large tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) effect were investigated with the X-ray absorption and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopies. It is revealed that a C$$_{60}$$-Co compound generated in the C$$_{60}$$-Co films shows the clear MCD signal attributed to the spin-polarized Co 3d states hybridized with C$$_{60}$$ $$pi$$ orbitals. The magnetic response of these Co 3d-derived states agrees well with temperature dependence of the observed MR ratios of the granular C$$_{60}$$-Co films. This suggests the incorporation of the spin-polarized Co 3d-derived states of the C$$_{60}$$-Co compound into the observed TMR effect.

Light element impurities in ultrathin top Silicon layers of silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafers were investigated by a luminescence activation method using electron irradiation. Photoluminescence (PL) measurement using ultraviolet (UV) light excitation was carried out of various commercial SOI wafers irradiated with electrons. The C-line related to a complex of interstitial carbon and oxygen impurities and the G-line related to a complex of interstitial and substitutional carbon impurities in the top Si layer with a thickness down to 62 nm were observed after electron irradiation. There were differences in the impurity concentration depending on the wafer fabrication methods and also that there were variations in these concentrations in the respective wafers. The present method is a verypromising tool to evaluate the light element impurities in top Si layers.

We investigated the correlation between the thremomagnetic curve of Co$$_{2}$$Z-Type hexagonal barium ferrite, Ba$$_{3}$$Co$$_{1.8}$$Fe$$_{24.2}$$O$$_{41}$$ and its magnetic moment direction. The thermomagnetic curve shows two significant magnetization slumps at 540K and 680K. High-temperature neutron diffraction experiment and Rietveld analyses indicate that temperature rise from 523 to 573K makes the magnetic moments turn to the c-axis from a direction parallel to the c-plane most significantly.The change in average orientation of the magnetic moments must be induced by the disappearence of the contribution of cobalt to magnetism in this temperature.
