Neutron devices such as neutron detectors, optical devices including supermirror devices and He neutron spin filters, and choppers are successfully developed and installed at the Materials Life Science Facility (MLF) of the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), Tokai, Japan. Four software components of MLF computational environment, instrument control, data acquisition, data analysis, and a database, have been developed and equipped at MLF. MLF also provides a wide variety of sample environment options including high and low temperatures, high magnetic fields, and high pressures. This paper describes the current status of neutron devices, computational and sample environments at MLF.

Availability using small reactor sited in deep underground cave was examined as a district heat supply system. From the viewpoint of a social acceptability, the contact points with a distributed small reactor system were examined to resolve a social structure-subject of a big city through investigation of the city environmental issue and city calamity. In order to estimate the scale of the heat source of a district heat supply system, a virtual city model was set up about 100,000 populations. It became clear that the heat can be supplied by installing two reactors with thermal-power 100MWt (MR-100G) in caves. Moreover, it turns out that the system will also function effectively for more than 40 years. The economic efficiency of this system was compared with the natural-gas boiler, and we confirmed that the district heat supply system by the small reactor is excellent especially for the case of long-term system operation.

Around the super conducting (SC) coils of SC linear accelerator or fusion reactor, several kind of dissimilar materials bond will be needed. In recent years, pure titanium has been proposed as jacket material for SC coil of fusion reactor. Cu-alloys will be used for connection of SC coils. Cryogenic stainless steels have been development for structural material. Therefore, it is necessary to develop new bonding techniques and we started the bonding technology development by hot isostatic press (HIP) method to bond Cu-alloys with titanium and cryogenic stainless steels. In this experiments, optimization of HIP bonding condition and evaluation of bonding strength by metallurgical observation, tensile and bending tests were performed.

The Engineering Design Activities (EDA) for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) was performed under the collaboration of Japan, EU, Russia and the US. The EDA was successfully completed in July 2001, in which the development of fabrication technology for advanced components, such as superconducting coils, was conducted. The ITER magnet system consists of Toroidal Field coils, a Central Solenoid (CS), Poloidal Field coils and Correction coils. The construction of these coils requires advanced technologies that fairly exceeded those available at the start of the EDA. Therefore, CS Model Coil and TF Model Coil projects were implemented. To fabricate the CS Model Coil, the fabrication technologies for high performance strand, large cable, winding, heat treatment, joint and insulation are indispensable. This report describes the above detailed fabrication technologies successfully developed in the CS Model Coil Project.

The transport behavior of trace-amount of radio nuclides such as I and Cs (Cs) in sodium have been studied on both conditions of normal sodium-steam reaction and sodium burning brought by excess steam supplying. trapping of these radio nuclides transported into gas phase in gas bubbler or scrubber, which is a component of waste gas treatment system, was also discussed. main experimental results were as follows: (1) under the normal sodium-steam reaction, partition ratio of Cs trans-ported into gas phase was 410, while those of I and Na were one hundred times smaller than that of 134cs. Chemical forms of Cs and I transported into gas phase were estimated to be cesium hydroxide and inorganic iodine such as nai, respectively. (2) when the sodium burning occurred by excess steam supplying, partitionratios of Na, I increased 250500 times larger than those under the normal sodium-steam reaction, while for Cs, it increased about 25 times larger than that under normal reaction. sma
