Radiological estimation and validation for the Accelerator-Based Boron Neutron Capture Therapy Facility at the Ibaraki Neutron Medical Research Center

Aiming of development of facilities for boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) that can be installed in hospitals, an accelerator-based BNCT facility is being developed at the Ibaraki Neutron Medical Research Center under a collaboration among the Japan Atomic Energy Agency, the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization, the University of Tsukuba, and other institutions. It consists of a proton accelerator, having a maximum beam power of 80 kW, and a target, moderator, collimator and shield (TMCS) system. For the design concept, to satisfy the BNCT beam conditions and achieve a low activation, the radiation behavior in the TMCS system was simulated by the Monte Carlo method and this system configuration was optimized accordingly. In addition, the radiation estimation of the TMCS system was verified via several experiments and its applicability for BNCT was proved. This report reviews the estimation and validation studies for the development of the accelerator-based BNCT facility.

To specify preferential occupation sites of Co substituents and to clarify charge and spin states of Co ions in (La, Co)-cosubstituted hexagonal magnetoplumbite-type (M-type) Sr ferrite, $$^{57}$$Fe and $$^{59}$$Co nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra are measured under zero and external magnetic fields using powdered and single crystalline specimens. To a considerable degree, the charge compensation between La$$^{3+}$$ and Co$$^{2+}$$ works in the equal (La, Co)-codoped case, where more than half of the Co ions are considered to be present in the minority spin $$4f_1$$ sites at the center of the oxygen tetrahedra, with the $$S$$ = 3/2 state carrying a small orbital moment owing to spin-orbit interaction. The remaining small number of high-spin Co$$^{2+}$$ ($$S$$ = 3/2, $$L$$ = 1) ions with unquenched orbital moments would be distributed to the other octahedral $$12k$$, $$2a$$, and $$4f_2$$ sites.

Nuclear and magnetic structure and full magnon dispersions of yttrium iron garnet Y$$_3$$Fe$$_5$$O$$_{12}$$ have been studied by neutron scattering. The lowest-energy dispersion below 14 meV exhibits a quadratic dispersion as expected from ferromagnetic magnons. The imaginary part of $$q$$-integrated dynamical spin susceptibility $$chi$$"($$E$$) exhibits a square-root energy-dependence in the low energies. The magnon density of state is estimated from the $$chi$$"($$E$$) obtained on an absolute scale. The value is consistent with a single chirality mode for the magnon branch expected theoretically.

The project of the comprehensive nuclear data research for the development of the advanced reactor systems had been executed successfully by eight organizations from 2005 to 2009. In this project, we constructed the pulsed neutron beamline that was aimed to obtain neutron capture cross-sections of long-lived fission products and minor actinides accurately. The energy spectra, spatial distributions, and pulses of the beam were studied by measurements and simulation calculations, and they were found to be consistent with those of the beamline design. In this paper, we present the overview of the project and the properties of the neutron beam provided by this beam line.

Japanese activities of test facilities in IFMIF-EVEDA (International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility-Engineering Validation and Engineering Design Activities) project have three subjects of engineering design of post irradiation examination (PIE) facilities, small specimen test technique (SSTT), and engineering design of high flux test module (HFTM), and this paper is summarized about present status. Functional analysis and design of 2-D and 3-D models of PIE facility were performed. In HFTM, as materials of heater, W-3Re alloy and/or SiC/SiC composite were selected in the points of high temperature materials, fabrication technology and some suitable properties such as resistance of thermal shock, high temperature re-crystallization, ductility, resistance of irradiation degradation, and low-activation. In SSTT, a test machine of fracture toughness was designed and developed for small specimens with 10 mm square, and it had high accuracy controllability for stress and displacement.

Fast ignition is a new scheme in laser fusion, in which higher energy gain with a smaller laser pulse energy is expected. At Osaka University, a laser with four beams and a total output of 10 kJ ps-1, laser for fast ignition experiment (LFEX), has been constructed and we have carried out an integrated experiment with one beam of the LFEX. Through experiments it was found that the coupling efficiency is degraded when the laser pre-pulse is not sufficiently small. Furthermore, the distance between the hot electron source and the core plasma is large. In this paper it is proposed that a thin foil covers the laser entrance of the cone to mitigate the pre-plasma and a double cone reduces the loss of high energy electrons from the side wall of the cone. The simulations indicate that a higher coupling efficiency is expected for the double cone target with a thin foil at the laser entrance.

Investigation of irradiation conditions for recurrent breast cancer in JRR-4

Recurrent breast cancer has been considered the application for boron neutron capture therapy using the JRR-4. The investigation of irradiation conditions for the recurrent breast cancer was performed by simulation with the JCDS. We performed the preliminary dosimetry of the model to verify the efficient irradiation conditions such as the neutron energy modes and multiple field technique. From the result, when the 30 Gy-Eq dose as minimum dose was delivered to the cancers, comparable dose distribution was delivered at the healthy tissues by both a one-port irradiation from anterior direction and a two-port irradiation from tangential direction. We revealed that the two-port irradiation was not valid to reduce the healthy tissues dose due to the isotopic scattering of neutrons in the body. We concluded that the optimal irradiation condition was the one-port irradiation with thermal neutron beam mode in terms of less healthy tissues dose and shorter irradiation time.

Resumption of JRR-4 and characteristics of the neutron beam for BNCT

The clinical trials of BNCT have been conducted using JRR-4. The JRR-4 stopped in January 2008, because the graphite reflector was considerably damaged. For this reason, the specifications of graphite reflectors were renewal. All existing graphite reflectors of JRR-4 were changed by new graphite reflectors. The resumption of JRR-4 was carried out with new graphite reflectors in February 2010. We measured the characteristics of neutron beam at the JRR-4 Neutron Beam Facility. A cylindrical water phantom was put the gap for 1cm from the beam port. TLD and gold wire were inserted within the phantom when the phantom was irradiated. The results of the measured thermal neutron flux and the $$gamma$$ dose in water were compared with MCNP calculations. The calculated results showed the same tendency with the experimental results. These results are proceeding well and will be reported in full paper at July 2010.

Growth of large protein crystals by a large-scale hanging-drop method

A method for growing large protein crystals is described. In this method, a cut pipette tip is used to hang large-scale droplets (maximum volume 200 $$mu$$l) consisting of protein and precipitating agents. A crystal grows at the vapor-liquid interface; thereafter the grown crystal can be retrieved by droplet-droplet contact both for repeated macroseeding and for mounting crystals in a capillary. Crystallization experiments with peroxiredoxin of ${it Aeropyrum pernix}$ K1(thioredoxin peroxidase, ApTPx) and hen egg white lysozyme demonstrated that this large-scale hanging-drop method could produce a large-volume crystal very effectively. A neutron diffraction experiment confirmed that an ApTPx crystal (6.2 mm$$^{3}$$) obtained by this method diffracted to beyond 3.5 ${AA}$ resolution.

Future synchrotron light source using a 5-GeV energy recovery linac (ERL) is under proposal by our Japanese collaboration team, and we are conducting R&D efforts for that. We are developing high-brightness DC photocathode guns, two types of cryomodules for both injector and main superconducting (SC) linacs, and 1.3 GHz high CW-power RF sources. We are also constructing the Compact ERL (cERL) for demonstrating the recirculation of low-emittance, high-current beams using above-mentioned critical technologies.
