The cold neutron source (CNS) of the research reactor JRR-3 converts thermal neutrons generated in the reactor into low-energy cold neutrons by moderating them with liquid hydrogen stored in the moderator cell. Cold neutrons generated by the CNS are transported to experimental instruments using neutron conduits, and are used for many studies of physical properties, mainly in life science, polymer science, environmental science, etc. Improvement of cold neutron intensity is essential to maintain competitiveness with the world's research reactors in neutron science, and we are developing a new CNS that incorporates new knowledge. The current moderator cell for the CNS of JRR-3 is a stainless-steel container which is a canteen bottle type, and the cold neutron intensity can be improved by changing the material and shape. Therefore, the basic specifications of the new moderator cell were changed to aluminum alloy which has a smaller neutron absorption cross section, and the shape was optimized using a Monte Carlo code MCNP. Since these changes in specifications will result in changes in heat generation and heat transfer conditions, the CNS of JRR-3 was re-evaluated in terms of self-regulating characteristic, heat transport limits, heat resistance and pressure resistance, etc., to confirm its feasibility in thermal-hydraulic design. This report summarizes the results of the thermal-hydraulic design evaluation of the new moderator cell.

In order to evaluate long-term coolablity of the debris-bed with decay heat, a three-dimensional calculation method coupled with the debris bed module was developed in this study. The coupled code calculation results show that natural circulation of the coolant between the hot pool and the cold pool is established through the four intermediate heat exchangers after the activation of the dipped direct heat exchangers. The cold pool with the debris-bed is continually cooled not only by the natural circulation flow, but also by heat transfer to the hot pool through the plenum separation plate between the hot pool and the cold pool. The effect of the three-dimensional flow field around the core catcher on the temperature in the debris-bed is about 20K under the current calculation condition.

Specific design features of advanced sodium-cooled fast reactors (SFRs) designed in Japan are a passive reactor shutdown system, a passive decay heat removal system (DHRS), and an in-vessel retention (IVR) concept against an anticipated transients without scram (ATWS) in design extension condition (DECs). The present paper describes numerical analysis methodologies for event sequences studied in Japan and some numerical analyses of DECs to show the effectiveness of the passive shutdown system against a typical ATWS and severe accident mitigation measures for the IVR of molten core. For the passive shutdown capability, the numerical analysis has demonstrated the effectiveness of a self-actuated shutdown system against a severe ATWS event, for which the temperature response time was separately evaluated by a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code. A recently developed debris-bed cooling analysis methodology coupled with a CFD code and a debris-bed module has successfully simulated a three-dimensional coolant flow field near the debris bed with the passive DHRS capability in order to demonstrate the debris-bed coolability on a core catcher.

The observed slow fluctuations are concerned with a successive growth of long-range electronic correlations below 3040 K, where the spin susceptibility along the hard magnetization axis (the -axis) shows a broad maximum. The experiments also imply that tiny amounts of disorder or defects locally disturb the long-range electronic correlations and develop an inhomogeneous electronic state at low temperatures, leading to a low temperature upturn observed in the bulk-susceptibility in . We suggest that UTe would be located on the paramagnetic side near an electronic phase boundary, where either the magnetic or Fermi-surface instability would be the origin of the characteristic fluctuations.

Using a single crystal, we have measured the Te-NMR Knight shift and spin-lattice relaxation rate for fields along the three orthorhombic crystal axes. The data confirm a moderate Ising anisotropy for both the static () and dynamical susceptibilities () in the paramagnetic state above about 20 K. Around 20 K, however, we have observed a sudden loss of NMR spin-echo signal due to sudden enhancement of the NMR spin-spin relaxation rate , when the field is applied along the easy axis of magnetization (= axis). This behavior suggests the development of longitudinal magnetic fluctuations along the axis at very low frequencies below 20 K.

Liquid Bi has an asymmetric first peak in the structure factors S(Q). The pair distribution function g(r) exhibits strange distance ratio of 1:2 between the first and the second peaks. Since a HS model with two kinds of radius produces asymmetry of the main peak in S(Q), existence of short-lived covalent bonds was discussed. Contrarily, modulation of the atomic distribution by the Friedel oscillations of shielding electrons around metallic ions was discussed. To examine its bonding nature from viewpoints of dynamic correlation functions, we have measured neutron quasielastic scattering of liquid Bi by using cold disk chopper spectrometer installed at MLF of J-PARC. The van Hove function revealed that the shoulder structure located at a longer side of the first peak in g(r) exhibits a longer relaxation time than the main structures such as the first and second peaks.

To a considerable degree, the charge compensation between La and Co works in the equal (La, Co)-codoped case, where more than half of the Co ions are considered to be present in the minority spin sites at the center of the oxygen tetrahedra, with the = 3/2 state carrying a small orbital moment owing to spin-orbit interaction. The remaining small number of high-spin Co ( = 3/2, = 1) ions with unquenched orbital moments would be distributed to the other octahedral , , and sites.

Times Cited Count:2 Percentile:10.36(Materials Science, Multidisciplinary)Pt NMR measurements have been performed on a single crystal of the uranium-based compound UPtGe, which is the only 5f system known to possess an incommensurate helical (cycloidal) structure below TN = 50 K. Knight shift measurement confirmed the isotropic character of the static spin susceptibilities in hexagonal-like ac crystal planes of the EuAuGe-type crystal structure. The hyperfine coupling constants were also found to be isotropic in the planes. Nuclear relaxation rate measurement revealed the development of the antiferro-magnetic spin fluctuations with XY character confined to the hexagonal-like plane below 200 K. The results present a clear contrast to the Ising anisotropy of the fluctuations in ferromagnetic superconductors UCoGe and URhGe.
