Here we report observations of Ryugu's subsurface material by the Near-Infrared Spectrometer (NIRS3) on the Hayabusa2 spacecraft. Reflectance spectra of excavated material exhibit a hydroxyl (OH) absorption feature that is slightly stronger and peak-shifted compared with that observed for the surface, indicating that space weathering and/or radiative heating have caused subtle spectral changes in the uppermost surface. However, the strength and shape of the OH feature still suggests that the subsurface material experienced heating above 300 $$^{circ}$$C, similar to the surface. In contrast, thermophysical modeling indicates that radiative heating does not increase the temperature above 200 $$^{circ}$$C at the estimated excavation depth of 1 m, even if the semimajor axis is reduced to 0.344 au. This supports the hypothesis that primary thermal alteration occurred due to radiogenic and/or impact heating on Ryugu's parent body.

We report the results of inelastic neutron scattering measurements on particular phonons of a superconducting (SC) Ca$$_{10}$$Pt$$_4$$As$$_8$$(Fe$$_{1-x}$$Pt$$_x$$As)$$_{10}$$ with the onset transition temperature $$T_c sim 33$$ K to investigate mainly what roles orbital fluctuation plays in Cooper pairing, where we observed a slight softening of the in-plane transverse acoustic mode corresponding to the elastic constant $$C_{66}$$. This softening starts at temperature $$T$$ well above the SC $$T_c$$, as $$T$$ decreases. An anomalously strong change of the scattering intensity of in-plane optical modes was observed at the M point of the pseudo tetragonal reciprocal space in the range of 35 $$< omega <$$ 40 meV with decreasing $$T$$ from far above $$T_c$$. Because this $$omega$$ region mainly corresponds to the motion of Fe and As atoms in the FeAs planes, the finding presents information on the coupling between the orbital fluctuation of Fe $$3d$$ electrons and the lattice system, useful for studying the possible roles of orbital fluctuation in the pairing mechanism and/or the appearance of the so-called nematic phase.

We have started the measurements of the neutron-capture cross sections for stable $$^{105,108}$$Pd nuclei as well as the radioactive $$^{107}$$Pd. The neutron-capture cross-section measurements by the time-of flight method were performed using an apparatus called "Accurate Neutron-Nucleus Reaction measurement Instrument (ANNRI)" installed at the neutron Beam Line No.4 of the Materials and Life science experimental Facility (MLF) in the J-PARC. The neutron-capture cross sections of $$^{107}$$Pd and $$^{105,108}$$Pd have been measured in the neutron energy range from thermal to 300 eV. Some new information was obtained for resonances of these Pd nuclei.

In this work, we measured the capture $$gamma$$ rays from the neutron resonances of $$^{74}$$Se and $$^{77}$$Se. A neutron time-of-flight method was adopted for the measurements with a 4$$pi$$ Ge spectrometer installed at the Accurate Neutron-Nucleus Reaction measurement Instrument (ANNRI) in the J-PARC Material and Life science experimental Facility (MLF). The $$gamma$$-ray pulse-height spectra corresponding to the 27-eV resonance of $$^{74}$$Se and the 113-, 212-, 291-, 342-, 690- and 864-eV resonances of $$^{77}$$Se were obtained by gating on the TOF regions, respectively. The relative intensities of those primary transitions were derived and compared with the previous experimental data. For the 27-eV resonance of $$^{74}$$Se, a strong primary transition to the 293-keV state was observed. As for $$^{77}$$Se, the quite differences of the decay pattern were found between the resonances.

The cross section of the $$^{237}$$Np$$(n,gamma)$$ reaction has been measured in the energy range from 10 meV to $$1$$ keV using the ANNRI-NaI detector at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). The cross section was obtained relative to that of the $$^{10}$$B$$(n,alpha)$$ reaction. The absolute value of the cross section was deduced by normalizing the relative cross section to the JENDL-4.0 evaluation at the first resonance. The thermal cross section was obtained to be (176.7$$pm$$4.7)b. The Maxwellian-averaged cross section for $$kT$$ = 25.3 meV was derived as (174.6$$pm$$5.1)b by referring the cross section from JENDL-4.0 below 10 meV. These results lead to the Westcott's $$g$$-factor of 0.988$$pm$$0.010.

Preparation for Pu measurement test of Fugen spent fuel assemblies by integrated PNAR/SINRD

Katano, Yoshiaki; Ebara, Noriyasu; Takagi, Hisatsugu; Nakamura, Takahisa; Bolind, A.; Seya, Michio

Kaku Busshitsu Kanri Gakkai (INMM) Nihon Shibu Dai-33-Kai Nenji Taikai Rombunshu (Internet), 10 Pages, 2012/10

The ATR, "Fugen" was a prototype nuclear reactor moderated by heavy water but cooled by boiling light water. It terminated its operations in 2003 and is now being decommissioned. Nevertheless, the spent-fuel pool at Fugen still remains and currently contains both MOX spent-fuel assemblies, and it is flexible enough to be able to conduct Non Destructive Assays (NDA) experiments on the spent fuel assemblies. Therefore, JAEA and the U.S. Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) are planning to conduct a test of an integrated PNAR/SINRD NDA measurement system at Fugen in 2013. LANL is designing and constructing the system, and JAEA is preparing the Fugen site for the test. The total experience of preparing for and conducting NDA measurements on actual spent fuel assemblies will teach important lessons about the practicality of applying such measurements in the future to spent fuel assemblies from commercial LWR power plants, especially with regard to satisfying legal and safety requirements.
