For the reduction of radioactive toxicities, feasibility study of nuclear transmutation of minor actinides (MAs) and long-lived fission products (LLFPs) by utilizing innovative nuclear reactor system (i.e. fast breeder reactors and accelerator-driven systems) has been actively conducted. To design these nuclear reactor systems, the accurate nuclear data are required. Therefore, to obtain more accurate nuclear data, the project entitled as "Research and development for Accuracy Improvement of neutron nuclear data on Minor ACtinides(AIMAC)" has been started as one of the "Innovative Nuclear Research and Development Program". In a part of this project, the nuclear data of MAs are verified in the variable neutron spectra field at Kyoto University Research Reactor Institute-LINear ACcelerator (KURRI-LINAC) and Kyoto University Critical Assembly (KUCA). And the differential TOF data is cross-checked with an integral data for the validation of $$^{237}$$Np, $$^{241}$$Am, and $$^{243}$$Am. In this summary, the results of reaction rate of neutron capture cross section of $$^{237}$$Np are reported as an example in the study.

In IFMIF/EVEDA, tasks for lithium target system are shared to 5 validation tasks (LF1-5) and a design task (LF6). The purpose of LF1 task is to construct and operate the EVEDA lithium test loop, and JAEA has a main responsibility to the performance of the Li test loop. LF2 is a task for the diagnostics of the Li test loop and IFMIF design. Basic research for the diagnostics equipment has been completed, and the construction for the Li test loop will be finished before March in 2011. LF4 is a task for the purification systems with nitrogen and hydrogen. Basic research for the purification equipment has been completed, and the construction of the nitrogen system for the Li test loop will be finished before March in 2011. LF5 is a task for the remote handling system with the target assembly. JAEA has an idea to use the laser beam for cutting and welding of the lip part of the flanges. LF6 is a task for the design of the IFMIF based on the validation experiments of LF1-5.

Engineering Validation and Engineering Design Activities (EVEDA) of the International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility (IFMIF) was started. As a Japanese activity for the target system, EVEDA Lithium Test Loop simulating hydraulic and impurity conditions of IFMIF is under design and preparation for fabrication. Feasibility of thermo-mechanical structure of the target assembly and the replaceable back-plate made of F82H (a RAFM) and 316L (a stainless steel) is a key issue. Toward final validation on the EVEDA loop, diagnostics applicable to a high-speed free-surface Li flow and hot traps to control nitrogen and hydrogen in Li are under tests. For remote handling of target assemblies and the replaceable back-plates activated up to 50 dpa/y, lip weld on 316L-316L by laser and dissimilar weld on F82H-316L are under investigation. As engineering design of the IFMIF target system, water experiments and hydraulic/thermo-mechanical analyses of the back-plate are going.

Transverse momentum distributions and yields for $$pi^{pm}, K^{pm}, p$$, and $$bar{p}$$ in $$p + p$$ collisions at $$sqrt{s}$$ = 200 and 62.4 GeV at midrapidity are measured by the PHENIX experiment at the RHIC. We present the inverse slope parameter, mean transverse momentum, and yield per unit rapidity at each energy, and compare them to other measurements at different $$sqrt{s}$$ collisions. We also present the scaling properties such as $$m_T$$ and $$x_T$$ scaling and discuss the mechanism of the particle production in $$p + p$$ collisions. The measured spectra are compared to next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations.

Measurements of electrons from the decay of open-heavy-flavor mesons have shown that the yields are suppressed in Au+Au collisions compared to expectations from binary-scaled $$p+p$$ collisions. Here we extend these studies to two particle correlations where one particle is an electron from the decay of a heavy flavor meson and the other is a charged hadron from either the decay of the heavy meson or from jet fragmentation. These measurements provide more detailed information about the interaction between heavy quarks and the quark-gluon matter. We find the away-side-jet shape and yield to be modified in Au+Au collisions compared to $$p+p$$ collisions.

JAEA-Research-2006-028.pdf:37.95MB

The collaboration project concerning sphere-pac fuel among JNC (Japan Nuclear Cycle Development Institute, now Japan Atomic Energy Agency), Swiss PSI (Paul Scherrer Institut) and Dutch NRG (Nuclear Research and Consultancy Group) was performed from 1996 till 2005. The target of this project is comparative irradiation tests of sphere-pac fuel in the HFR (High Flux Reactor) in Petten in the Netherlands with pellet fuel and vipac fuel. Total 16 fuel segments (8 pins) containing 5%Np-MOX sphere-pac segments were irradiated. No fuel failure was occurred. Restructuring of sphere-pac fuel was quickly progressed in early stage of irradiation, and formation of the central hole was almost completed within 48 hours steady state irradiation. According to the results of the power-to-melt test, the power to melt linear heat rates were estimated as 60kW/m for the sphere-pac fuel and as 73kW/m for the pellet fuel under HFR irradiation conditions. Irradiation behaviors of the vipac fuel and Np-MOX sphere-pac fuel were basically similar to that of the MOX sphere-pac fuel. However, the central hole of the Np-MOX sphere-pac fuel was larger than that of MOX sphere-pac fuel in the restructuring test. It suggests that the thermal conductivity of Np-MOX fuel is smaller than that of MOX fuel.
