Neutron devices such as neutron detectors, optical devices including supermirror devices and $$^{3}$$He neutron spin filters, and choppers are successfully developed and installed at the Materials Life Science Facility (MLF) of the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), Tokai, Japan. Four software components of MLF computational environment, instrument control, data acquisition, data analysis, and a database, have been developed and equipped at MLF. MLF also provides a wide variety of sample environment options including high and low temperatures, high magnetic fields, and high pressures. This paper describes the current status of neutron devices, computational and sample environments at MLF.

AMATERAS is a cold-neutron disk-chopper spectrometer in MLF, J-PARC. The construction of main part of the spectrometer has been completed in spring of 2009. Soon after that, we have started the commissioning work on AMATERAS. The performance of AMATERAS has been examined by test experiments in the course of commissioning. In parallel to these works, we have started the user program on AMATERAS from December 2009 and we are getting scientific results from our spectrometer. In this presentation, we will report the current status of AMATERAS including the results of performance tests and some of examples of scientific outputs.

The construction of The Engineering Materials Diffractometer, TAKUMI of J-PARC has been finished on March 2009, and the commissioning has been started from September 2008 being parallel with the final stage of the construction. In the commissioning, after checking the validity and the stability of the detectors and the data acquisition system, we checked powder diffraction data of a 2 mm diameter of annealed piano wire with combination of beam collimation (high resolution mode), and confirmed that resolution $$Delta$$$$d$$/$$d$$ of less than 0.2% can be achieved. We also reports preliminary results from researches using TAKUMI.

This report presents the knowledge acquired by the endurance test of the bearing used for the rotary drum type continuation dissolver under development as part of Fast Breeder Reactor Cycle technology Development Project (FaCT project). The bearing used for a dissolver is used on high radiation environment and the severe conditions of high load low swing motion operation. In order to check the endurance of the bearing in such conditions, the endurance test of the small scale of hybrid roll bearing using the lubricant which imitated carbon slide bearing as a-less lubricous type, and imitated radiation and heat degradation as a lubricous type was carried out, and the applicability to dissolver bearing was evaluated.

AMATERAS is a cold-neutron disk-chopper spectrometer installed at beam-line No. 14 at Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) at J-PARC. Owing to the use of newly developed high-speed disk choppers and the high peak intensity from the coupled moderator source of MLF, the AMATERAS design to realize high-intensity and fine and flexible energy resolution measurements in quasielastic and inelastic neutron scattering experiments in cold and sub-thermal neutron energy region. In this presentation, we will show the current status of AMATEAS including the results of performance tests and some of examples of scientific outputs.
