The primary amine N1923 was used as an extractant which was prepared in the isoparaffin IP-2028 diluent. Thorium and uranium were selectively recovered in a hydrometallurgical circuit established by continuous mixer-settler extraction, scrubbing, and back-extraction at the laboratory scale. The desired purity of Th and U can be achieved by managing the volume ratio of organic to aqueous phase (O/A ratio) in the corresponding steps. Highly pure Th and U were recovered from the pregnant back-extraction liquor and the raffinate, respectively, which have satisfactory properties for further processing of the subsequent nuclear materials.

In this study, seventeen commercially available ketones were selected as representatives of alkyl ketones. It was found that several ketones effectively extracted Pd(II) from nitric acid medium. Methylalkylketones, such as 2-octanone, 2-nonanone, 2-undecanone, 2-tridecanone, and ketones containing symmetrical alkyl configuration, such as 5-nonanone, 5-decanone, 5-undecanone and 6-undecanone exhibited significant extraction of Pd(II) from nitric acid. Particularly, 2-tridecanone and 2-nonanone showed efficient extractability for Pd(II) and their extraction behavior was fully vestigated. With these extractants the partitioning of Pd(II) to the organic phase was significant at a ligand concentration of 3.0 M and acidity above 2.0 M.

In this study, a model of a partially damaged reactor, that simulates a possible scenario of a nuclear accident, was proposed. In this model, the fuel assemblies at the core center have melted into fuel debris of various shapes, while the fuel assemblies at the core edge remain unaffected. The effects of various parameters, including debris shape, the volume of debris, and the moderator-to-debris volume ratio, on the neutronic characteristics of the system were investigated using the Serpent 2 code and the JENDL-5 nuclear data library. The results indicated that for a small moderator-to-debris volume ratio, the neutronic characteristics of the system were divided into two groups according to the shape of the fuel debris. However, when this ratio became large, the difference between these two groups became insignificant.
