Extraction of $$^{99}$$Mo hot atoms made by a neutron capture method from $$alpha$$-MoO$$_{3}$$ to water

Quach, N. M.*; Ngo, M. C.*; Yang, Y.*; Nguyen, T. B.*; Nguyen, V. T.*; Fujita, Yoshitaka; Do, T. M. D.*; Nakayama, Tadachika*; Suzuki, Tatsuya*; Suematsu, Hisayuki*

Journal of Radioanalytical and Nuclear Chemistry, 332(10), p.4057 - 4064, 2023/10

Technetium-99m ($$^{99m}$$Tc) is the most widely used medical radioisotope in the world and is produced from molybdenum-99 ($$^{99}$$Mo). Production of $$^{99}$$Mo via the neutron capture method draws attention as an alternative to fission-derived $$^{99}$$Mo due to non-proliferation issues, but the specific radioactivity of $$^{99}$$Mo is extremely low. In this work, a porous $$alpha$$-MoO$$_{3}$$ wire was prepared as an irradiation target in order to improve the specific activity by extracting $$^{99}$$Mo. Porous $$alpha$$-MoO$$_{3}$$ wire is synthesized from Mo metal wire by a two-step heating procedure. The hot atom effect of $$^{99}$$Mo was confirmed by activity and isotope measurements of the porous $$alpha$$-MoO$$_{3}$$ wire after neutron irradiation and the water used for extraction. In term of the extraction effectiveness, the effectiveness of $$^{99}$$Mo extraction in the porous $$alpha$$-MoO$$_{3}$$ wire was comparable to that of commercial $$alpha$$-MoO$$_{3}$$ powder.

Journal of Physical Chemistry C, 127(12), p.5982 - 5990, 2023/03

Micrometer-sized wrinkles in graphene are known to affect the electronic properties of graphene due to their shape and the strain variations they create. Here, we analyze the strain distribution and doping of a graphene wrinkle having 1.9 nm width using tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) in ambient conditions. We found a strong correlation between the TERS images of the graphene wrinkle and the electronic Raman scattering (eRS) of the Au(111) substrate. Our work demonstrates that the as-fabricated physical and electronic properties of nanometer-sized features, such as wrinkles, can be probed and studied in detail with TERS which is essential for nanodevice characterization.

A continuous counter-current extraction for the selective recovery of thorium (Th) and uranium (U) from the Yen Phu (Vietnam) rare earth concentrate leach solutions was systematically studied. The primary amine N1923 was used as an extractant which was prepared in the isoparaffin IP-2028 diluent. Thorium and uranium were selectively recovered in a hydrometallurgical circuit established by continuous mixer-settler extraction, scrubbing, and back-extraction at the laboratory scale. The desired purity of Th and U can be achieved by managing the volume ratio of organic to aqueous phase (O/A ratio) in the corresponding steps. Highly pure Th and U were recovered from the pregnant back-extraction liquor and the raffinate, respectively, which have satisfactory properties for further processing of the subsequent nuclear materials.

Numerical study on longitudinal distance effect on failure stress of non-aligned twin cracked pipe

Nguyen, T.-L.*; Lee, M.-W.*; Hasegawa, Kunio; Kim, Y.-J.*

Proceedings of 2018 ASME Pressure Vessels and Piping Conference (PVP 2018), 7 Pages, 2018/07

The effect of longitudinal distance H between non-aligned twin cracks is investigated using finite element damage analysis. It is shown that the failure bending stresses are raised by increasing longitudinal distance H for deep short cracks. On the contrary, shallow long cracks are unaffected by the distance H.

We report on the event structure and double helicity asymmetry ($$A_{LL}$$) of jet production in longitudinally polarized $$p + p$$ collisions at $$sqrt{s}$$ = 200 GeV. Photons and charged particles were measured by the PHENIX experiment. Event structure was compared with the results from PYTHIA event generator. The production rate of reconstructed jets is satisfactorily reproduced with the next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculation. We measured $$A_{LL}$$ = -0.0014 $$pm$$ 0.0037 at the lowest $$P_T$$ bin and -0.0181 $$pm$$ 0.0282 at the highest $$P_T$$ bin. The measured $$A_{LL}$$ is compared with the predictions that assume various $$Delta G(x)$$ distributions.

Transverse momentum distributions and yields for $$pi^{pm}, K^{pm}, p$$, and $$bar{p}$$ in $$p + p$$ collisions at $$sqrt{s}$$ = 200 and 62.4 GeV at midrapidity are measured by the PHENIX experiment at the RHIC. We present the inverse slope parameter, mean transverse momentum, and yield per unit rapidity at each energy, and compare them to other measurements at different $$sqrt{s}$$ collisions. We also present the scaling properties such as $$m_T$$ and $$x_T$$ scaling and discuss the mechanism of the particle production in $$p + p$$ collisions. The measured spectra are compared to next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations.

Measurements of electrons from the decay of open-heavy-flavor mesons have shown that the yields are suppressed in Au+Au collisions compared to expectations from binary-scaled $$p+p$$ collisions. Here we extend these studies to two particle correlations where one particle is an electron from the decay of a heavy flavor meson and the other is a charged hadron from either the decay of the heavy meson or from jet fragmentation. These measurements provide more detailed information about the interaction between heavy quarks and the quark-gluon matter. We find the away-side-jet shape and yield to be modified in Au+Au collisions compared to $$p+p$$ collisions.

The PHENIX experiment at RHIC has measured the invariant differential cross section for production of $$K^0_s$$, $$omega$$, $$eta'$$ and $$phi$$ mesons in $$p + p$$ collisions at $$sqrt{s}$$ = 200 GeV. The spectral shapes of all hadron transverse momentum distributions are well described by a Tsallis distribution functional form with only two parameters, $$n$$ and $$T$$, determining the high $$p_T$$ and characterizing the low $$p_T$$ regions for the spectra, respectively. The integrated invariant cross sections calculated from the fitted distributions are found to be consistent with existing measurements and with statistical model predictions.

A series of HIV protease inhibitor based on the allophenylnorstatine structure with various P2' moieties were synthesized. Among these analogues, we discovered that a small allyl group would maintain potent enzyme inhibitory activity compared to that of the $$o$$-methylbenzyl moiety in clinical candidate 1 (KNI-764, also known as JE-2147, AG-1776 or SM-319777). Introduction of an anilinic amino group to 2 (KNI-727) improved water-solubility and anti-HIV-1 activity. X-ray crystallographic analysis of 13k (KNI-1689) with a $$beta$$-methallyl group at P2' position revealed hydrophobic interactions with Ala28, Ile84, and Ile50' similar to that of 1. The presence of an additional methyl group on the allyl group in compound 13k significantly increased anti-HIV activity over 1, while providing a rational drug design for structural minimization and improving membrane permeability.

Radiopharmacies have been used in various medical diagnoses/therapies and their market has been growing by ten times in fifteen years. In particular, $$^{99m}$$Tc has been widely used in gamma ray diagnoses. $$^{99}$$Mo, the raw material for $$^{99m}$$Tc, is currently produced as a fission product by irradiating highly enriched uranium in nuclear reactors. Efforts are being made worldwide to reduce the use of uranium from the perspective of nuclear non-proliferation. A $$^{98}$$Mo(n,$$gamma$$)$$^{99}$$Mo reaction in low enriched uranium reactors can be an alternative method. In this research, we revealed that $$beta$$-MoO$$_{3}$$, a low-temperature phase of MoO$$_{3}$$, as a neutron irradiation target promotes the diffusion of $$^{99}$$Mo from the target to water due to the hot atom effect. Utilizing this phenomenon can contribute to the stable supply of $$^{99}$$Mo and $$^{99m}$$Tc. The first nuclear reaction in/water dispersion experiments using an $$alpha$$-MoO$$_{3}$$ powder target was carried out in Dalat Nuclear Reactor, Vietnam Atomic Energy Institute to show the hot atom effect. Then, the water recovery efficiency was dramatically improved using a novel $$beta$$-MoO$$_{3}$$ whisker target by Vietnamese students and staffs. Their contributions to this research will be explained in the presentation.
