Large reversible magnetocaloric effect in ferromagnetic semiconductor EuS

We present the large reversible magneto caloric effect of the ferromagnetic semiconductor EuS which shows a maximum magnetic entropy change of 37 J/K kg at 10.4 K, an adiabatic temperature change of 10.4 K and a relative cooling power of 782 J/kg at 18.5 K for a magnetic field change of 5 T. The present results indicate that EuS has excellent refrigeration performance at the temperatures near 20 K, and thus can be considered as the potential magnetic refrigerant material for liquefaction of hydrogen.

Competition between magnetic ordering and random spin freezing in Dy$$_2$$PtS$$_3$$

We report the results for ac and dc susceptibility, magnetization, magnetic relaxation, specific heat and electrical resistivity measurements on a well annealed ternary intermetallic compound Dy$$_2$$PtSi$$_3$$. An unusual magnetic phase transition with an apparent ferromagnetic nature was observed at $$T_{rm C}$$ = 5.6 K. The classification of Dy$$_2$$PtSi$$_3$$ as a large magnetic cluster (extended short-range ferromagnetic ordered) system with competition between magnetic ordering and random spin freezing seems appropriate.

Evidence for spin-glass state in nonmagnetic atom disorder compound Pr$$_2$$AgIn$$_3$$

A systematic investigation of magnetic properties has been performed on intermetallic compound Pr$$_2$$AgIn$$_3$$, which crystallizes in a disordered hexagonal CaIn$$_2$$-type structure. The results provide clear evidence for the formation of spin-glass state in Pr$$_2$$AgIn$$_3$$ below a spin freezing temperature $$T$$$$_f$$ $$sim$$ 3.7 K accompanied with a short-range magnetic order. The spin-glass state in Pr$$_2$$AgIn$$_3$$ can be considered to originate from the continued site randomness of the non- magnetic elements, Ag and In, which introduce the random distribution of the RKKY interactions.

Magnetic anisotropy and spin-glass behavior in single crystalline U$$_2$$PdSi$$_3$$

We present the magnetic and transport properties of single crystalline U$$_2$$PdSi$$_3$$ measured with the magnetic field applied along two typical crystallographic directions. For both directions, a spin-glass state is confirmed to form at low temperature with the same spin freezing temperature 11.5 K, initial frequency shift 0.023 and activation energy 90.15 K in zero field. Strong anisotropy in magnetic and transport behavior is found to be a significant feature of U$$_2$$PdSi$$_3$$. The usual ferromagnetic-like anomaly in ac susceptibility and dc magnetization curves around 71 K is observed for $$H parallel c$$.
