In recent years, analysis of characteristic X-rays from muonic atoms, in which a muon is captured, has attracted attention because both a muon beam and a muon-induced characteristic X-ray have high transmission abilities. Here we report the first non-destructive elemental analysis of a carbonaceous chondrite using one of the world-leading intense direct current muon beam source (MuSIC; MUon Science Innovative Channel). We successfully detected characteristic muonic X-rays of Mg, Si, Fe, O, S and C from Jbilet Winselwan CM chondrite, of which carbon content is about 2 wt percent, and the obtained elemental abundance pattern was consistent with that of CM chondrites.

Estimating the rate of change in landforms and geological environments due to erosion is important when assessing the safety of the geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste in Japan. The aim of this study is to develop an index of erosion rates in inland mountains. We focused on circular abandoned channels, which are old river valleys around detached meander cores formed by the cut-off of incised meandering rivers. The channels can be useful for estimating incision rates because they occur at a range of elevations throughout the Japanese Islands. We undertook a case study to determine the incision rate using a circular abandoned channel in the middle reaches of the Kumanogawa River in the Kii Peninsula, where many circular abandoned channels have been identified. We obtained undisturbed core samples of old river channel deposits and angular gravel deposits that overlie the circular abandoned channel. The old river channel deposits have been emergent since at least MIS5, based on an analysis of the soil color in angular gravel deposits. The incision rate, as calculated from this age and the difference in elevation between the abandoned and present channels, is less than about 0.9 m/ky. This study shows that analyses of circular abandoned channels can yield estimates of incision rates and potentially also uplift rates. More accurate estimates of incision rates require further studies of the dating and evolution of sediments that overlie circular abandoned channels.

This fluoroscopy, so-called X-ray radiography that gives the density distribution of the inside of an object, has been applied to the vast research field such as natural/material/medical sciences, industry and technology. The recent development on the intense pulsed muon source at J-PARC MUSE (rate of 106 cps for 60 MeV/c) enabled us to pioneer a new frontier of analytical sciences. Here we report on a non-destructive elemental analysis by using muon capture. Controlling muon's momentum from 32.5 to 57.5 MeV/c. we successfully demonstrated a depth-profile analysis of light elements from several mm-thick layered materials, and non-destructive bulk analyses of meteorites containing organics. Now it is a beginning to utilize a new eye, muon radiography.

The charge test of Central Solenoid Model Coil(CSMC) and Toroidal Field Insert Coil(TFIC) were carried out fo about one month from September 2001 with international collaboration under ITER EDA. In the experiment, Acoustic Emission(AE) signals were measured which were induced from CSMC and TFIC. It was the first trial to measure the AE signals from the insert coil directly. Relations among AE signals from TFIC, intensity, number and voltages are discussed in this paper.

Times Cited Count:34 Percentile:48.48(Nuclear Science & Technology)With the main aim of providing physics basis for ITER and the steady-state tokamak reactors, JT-60/JT-60U has been developing and optimizing the operational concepts, and extending the discharge regimes toward sustainment of high integrated performance in the reactor relevant parameter regime. In addition to achievement of the equivalent break-even condition (QDTeq up to 1.25) and a high fusion triple product = 1.5E21 m-3skeV, JT-60U has demonstrated the integrated performance of high confinement, high beta-N, full non-inductive current drive with a large fraction of bootstrap current in the reversed magnetic shear and in the high-beta-p ELMy H mode plasmas characterized by both internal and edge transport barriers. The key factors in optimizing these plasmas are profile and shape controls. As represented by discovery of various Internal Transport Barriers, JT-60/JT-60U has been emphasizing freedom and restriction of profiles in various confinement modes. JT-60U has demonstrated applicability of these high confinement modes to ITER and also clarified remaining issues.

In recent years, analysis of characteristic X-rays from muonic atoms, in which a muon is captured, has attracted attention because both a muon beam and a muon-induced characteristic X-ray have high transmission abilities, of which energies are about 200 times higher. From these features, a muonic X-ray analysis has great advantages in several ways. At the conference, we will report on our recent progress of muonic X-ray analysis and discuss on a future prospect for applications for Earth and planetary science.
