A collapse event of a cooling tower for secondary cooling system in the Japan Materials Testing Reactor (JMTR) was caused by the strong winds of Typhoon No.15 on September 9, 2019. As measures against the event, the working group for the renewal of the UCL (Utility Cooling Loop) cooling tower was established in the department of JMTR, and the integrity of the UCL cooling tower, which is the same type of wooden cooling tower as the secondary cooling tower in the JMTR, was investigated. As a result of this investigation, we have decided to replace the existing UCL cooling tower with a new cooling system. After investigations, in order to reduce the risk of collapse due to wood decay, the new cooling system was installed as a component of the air system to be managed as a performance maintenance facility after decommissioning. This report describes the design of and the evaluation results of the facility.

The reaction cycle continues until the muon ends up its lifetime of 2.2 s. Since the muon does not participate in the nuclear reaction, the reaction is so called a muon catalyzed fusion (CF). The recycling muon has a particular kinetic energy (KE) of the muon molecular orbital when the nuclear reaction occurs. Since the KE is based on the unified atom limit where distance between two nuclei is zero. A precise few-body calculation estimating KE distribution (KED) is also in progress, which could be compared with the experimental results. In the present work, we observed recycling muons after CF reaction.

These two nuclei are bound by and form a muonic hydrogen molecular ion, dt. Due to the short inter-nuclear distance of dt, the nuclear fusion, d +t + n + 17.6 MeV, occurs inside the molecule. This reaction is called muon catalyzed fusion (CF). Recently, the interest on CF is renewed from the viewpoint of applications, such as a source of high-resolution muon beam and mono-energetic neutron beam. In this work, we report a time evolution calculation of CF in a two-layered hydrogen isotope target.

In this process, nuclides other than separated ones are discarded on the slits in BigRIPS, although they include many nuclides interested from the view point of nuclear structure. In order to extract these nuclides for parasitic experiments, we are developing a method using laser ion-source (PALIS). A test experiment with Se beam from RIBF has been performed by using a gas cell set in BigRIPS. Unstable nuclides around Se were stopped in the gas cell in accordance with a calculation using LISE code. The stopping efficiency has been estimated to be about 30%. As a next step, we will establish the technique for extracting reaction products from the gas cell.

We report on a study on incomplete fusion induced by deuteron, which contains one proton and one neutron with a weak binding energy and is easily broken up. This reaction study was achieved by measuring directly the cross sections for both proton and deuteron for Pd at 50 MeV/u via inverse kinematics technique. The results provide direct experimental evidence for the onset of a cross-section enhancement at high energy, indicating the potential of incomplete fusion induced by loosely-bound nuclei for creating proton-rich isotopes and nuclear transmutation of radioactive waste.

The studied NRPs were --butyl (NBP) and --propyl (NProP) derivatives. In both systems, the precipitation yields precisely determined were always higher than those simply calculated from the ratio of uranium concentrations before and after the precipitation. However, the differences between them are in the range of 0.6% - 2.6%. If such a difference is practically negligible, the volume reduction through the precipitation does not have to be taken into account for simplicity of the analytical manipulation.

Either a visible CCD detector coupled with a CsI phosphor screen or an imaging plate can be chosen, depending on the signal intensities and exposure times. The absolute sensitivity of the spectrometer system was calibrated using pre-characterized laser-produced X-ray sources and radioisotopes. The integrated reflectivity for the crystal is in good agreement with predictions by an open code for X-ray diffraction. The energy transfer efficiency from incident laser beams to hot electrons, as the energy transfer agency for specific X-ray line emissions, is derived as a consequence of this work.

Absolutely yield of X-rays at 17 keV from Mo and 22 keV from Ag were measured as a function of the laser pulse contrast ratio and irradiation intensity. Significant enhancement of yields were obtained for both Mo and Ag with higher contrast ratios and high irradiance. The obtained compounds have the similar composition, PuO(NO)(NRP) (NRP = NCP, NNpP), which are analogous to the corresponding U(VI) complexes. Both PuO(NO)(NRP) complexes show typical structural properties of actinyl(VI) nitrates, i.e., hexagonal-bipyramidal geometry consisting of two NRP molecules and two NO ions located in trans positions in the equatorial plane of PuO moiety. These findings provide one of criteria in selection of suitable NRP as a precipitation agent for the spent nuclear fuel reprocessing based on the precipitation method.

In this system, first only U(IV) species are precipitated using pyrrolidone derivative with low hydrophobicity and donicity, and secondly residual U(VI) and Pu(IV, VI) are precipitated simultaneously using pyrrolidone derivative with high precipitation ability. In this study, we have examined precipitation behavior of U(VI), Pu(IV), and Pu(VI) species in nitric acid solutions by using --propyl-2-pyrrolidone (NProP), -butyl-2-pyrrolidone (NBP), --butyl-2-pyrrolidone (NiBP), or -cyclohexyl-2-pyrrolidone (NCP) to select the precipitants for the first precipitation process. As a result, NBP were found to be the most promising precipitant for the first precipitation process.
