Mesospheric ionization during substorm growth phase

We identified two energetic electron precipitation (EEP) events during the growth phase of moderate substorms and estimated the mesospheric ionization rate for an EEP event for which the most comprehensive dataset from ground-based and space-born instruments was available. The mesospheric ionization signature reached below 70 km altitude and continued for ~15 min until the substorm onset, as observed by the PANSY radar and imaging riometer at Syowa Station in the Antarctic region. We also used energetic electron flux observed by the Arase and POES 15 satellites as the input for the air-shower simulation code PHITS to quantitatively estimate the mesospheric ionization rate. Combining the cutting-edge observations and simulations, we shed new light on the space weather impact of the EEP events during geomagnetically quiet times, which is important to understand the possible link between the space environment and climate.

And the section also designed and produced a Crawler Robot for Opening and Closing Manual Valves in 2019 fiscal year. Maintenance and Operation Section for Remote Control Equipment in Naraha Center for Remote Control Technology Development is the main part of the nuclear emergency response team of JAEA deal with Act on Special Measures Concerning Nuclear Emergency Preparedness. The section needs to remodel crawler-type robots for tasks, crawler-type scouting robots, and so on. About two crawler-type robots for tasks, the section designed and mounted advanced wireless communication equipment on manipulators mounted on the two robots. The crawler part of the robot has been able to be controlled by way of the new equipment, and when it is broken down, it can be changed by way of an original equipment. And the new equipment makes a single relay robot controllable both the crawler part and the manipulator part of the robot, in case of wireless relay robots being needed. And after checking the ability and characteristic about 5 wireless communication equipment, the section chose and mounted the best equipment on one crawler-type scouting robot. This report shows design and mounting advanced wireless communication equipment on the two crawler-type robots for tasks and on the one crawler-type scouting robot.

Transient ionization of the mesosphere was detected at around 65 km altitude during the isolated auroral expansion occurred at 2221-2226 UT on June 30, 2017. A general-purpose Monte Carlo particle transport code PHITS suggested that significant ionization is possible in the middle atmosphere due to auroral X-rays from the auroral electrons of $$<$$10 keV.

Act on Special Measures Concerning Nuclear Emergency Preparedness was amended on the 30th of October in 2017. As the JAEA Emergency Assistance Organization, Maintenance and Operation Section for Remote Control Equipment in Naraha Center for Remote Control Technology Development started training for emergency response robots operation for operators in each site of JAEA in response to the new amendment. The training consists of three operations: small crawler-type mobile scouting robots, big crawler-type mobile robots with a manipulator or a long tong and small radio-controlled helicopters. The training has three classes (beginner, intermediate and advanced classes) depending on skills and experiences. This paper reports the training programs of emergency response robots operation of the beginner and intermediate classes which were used in the first half of fiscal 2018.

Japan Atomic Energy Agency started to construct a fully superconducting tokamak experiment device, JT-60SA, to support the ITER since January, 2013 at the Fusion Research and Development Directorate in Naka, Japan. The JT-60SA will be constructed with enhancing the previous JT-60 infrastructures, in the JT-60 torus hall, where the ex-JT-60 machine was disassembled. The JT-60SA Cryostat Base, for base of the entire tokamak structure, were assembly as first step of this construction. The Cryostat Base (CB, 250 tons) is consists of 7 main made of stainless steel, 12m diameter and 3m height. It was built in the Spain and transported to the Naka site with the seven major parts split, via Hitachi port. The assembly work of these steps, preliminary measurements, sole plate adjustments of its height and flatness, and assembly of the CB. Introduces the concrete result of assembly work and transport of JT-60SA cryostat base.

Cementitious grout material will be used to reduce groundwater inflow into the repository of high level radioactive waste. High pH solution derived from cementitious grout material may cause alteration of rock mass by grout-rock interactions. With regard to evaluation of radionuclide migration, it is important to evaluate the long-term behavior of rock mass affected by grout-rock interactions since such altered rock mass potentially affects on migration behavior (e.g., diffusion and sorption) of radionuclide. This study presents the results of identification for trace secondary minerals (alteration products) by (micro)infrared spectroscopy and determination of reaction rate constants of formation for secondary minerals.
