The magnetic-field-induced valence transition in EuNi$$_2$$(Si$$_{1-x}$$Ge$$_x$$)$$_2$$ (x=0.82, 0.85) has been studied by X-ray absorption spectroscopy at low temperatures. The field dependence of the Eu valence is directly observed for the first time. We find a significant decrease in the valences at high magnetic fields above 40 T. The valence of Eu changes from v = 2.75 at a zero field to v = 2.33 at 40 T for x = 0.82. The results are analyzed using a theoretical model. The hybridization parameter V between the Eu$$^{2+}$$ and Eu$$^{3+}$$ states and the energy separation $$Delta$$$$E$$ are determined, which are crucial for quantum mechanical mixing.

We report the first high-field X-ray diffraction experiment using synchrotron X-rays and pulsedmagnetic fields exceeding 30 T. The lattice deformation due to a magnetic-field-induced valencetransition in YbInCu$$_4$$ is studied. It has been found that the Bragg reflection profile at 32K changessignificantly at around 27 T due to the structural transition. In the vicinity of the transition field, the lowfield and high field phases alternate with the discontinuous change in the lattice constant. Thus, it isevident that the field-induced valence state transition is a first-order phase transition. The fielddependence of the low-field-phase Bragg peak intensity is found to be roughly scaled with themagnetization.

Usually, X-ray diffraction experiments under strong magnetic fields are carried out using a superconducting magnet and the maximum field is limited up to 15T. In order to overcome this limitation, we have constructed an X-ray diffraction system combined with a pulsed magnet. The structural phase transition of Pr$$_{0.6}$$Ca$$_{0.4}$$MnO$$_3$$ around 8 T and the valence transition of YbInCu$$_4$$ around 26 T are shown as a demonstration.

The hfs separation $$Deltanu$$ of $$^{126}$$Cs($$T$$$$_{1/2} = 1.63$$ m) in the 6s $$^2$$S$$_{1/2}$$ ground state was obtained in a precision measurement near zero magnetic field by means of atomic beam magnetic resonance with laser optical pumping on-line with the CERN-PSB-ISOLDE mass separator. The result, $$Deltanu = 3629.514(0.001)$$ MHz, corrects significantly a previous published value from a high-field experiment. With our result, the precision of the nuclear magnetic moment, $$mu(^{126}$$Cs)$$sim 0.776 mu_N$$, is now limited by the influence of extended nuclear structure on the hfs (the Bohr-Weisskopf effect).

A very small capacitor bank and miniature pulsed magnets have been developed to perform high-field synchrotron radiation experiments. A 20T pulsed field can be generated using an energy of 1kJ with typical pulse duration about 1ms. Electron spin resonance experiments in millimeter wave range and high-field X-ray diffraction experiments have been done successfully.

Current status and plans of sample environment (SE) in MLF are introduced and discussed in the presentation. As a new SE device, a 7 T vertical-field superconducting magnet was install in March 2012, and is scheduled to be used for a general user's experiment coming October. Pulse magnet system for neutron experiments has also been developed in IMR group in Tohoku Univ., and 40 T of pulsed magnetic field has successfully applied in a neutron experiment in our facility. Furthermore, we have planned effective use of SE resources of the KEK neutron facility (KENS), which was shutdown in 2006, and we completed transportation of them from Tsukuba to MLF in FY2011, One of remaining issues is user support system on SE.
