We report the first observation by momentum-resolved resonant inelastic X-ray scattering of charge excitations in an iron-based superconductor and its parent compound, PrFeAsO$$_{0.7}$$ and PrFeAsO respectively, with two main results. First, using calculations based on a 16 band $$dp$$ model, we show that the energy of the lowest-lying excitations, identified as $$dd$$ interband transitions of dominant $$xz$$, $$yz$$ orbital character, exhibits a dramatic dependence on electron correlation. This enables us to estimate the Coulomb repulsion $$U$$ and Hund's coupling $$J$$, and to highlight the role played by $$J$$ in these peculiar orbital-dependent electron correlation effects. Second, we show that short-range antiferromagnetic correlations, which are a prerequisite to the occurrence of these excitations at the $$Gamma$$ point, are still present in the superconducting state.

Here we report the new features and improvements in our latest release of the H-Invitational Database, a comprehensive annotation resource for human genes and transcripts. H-InvDB, originally developed as an integrated database of the human transcriptome based on extensive annotation of large sets of fulllength cDNA (FLcDNA) clones, now provides annotation for 120 558 human mRNAs extracted from the International Nucleotide Sequence Databases (INSD), in addition to 54 978 human FLcDNAs, in the latest release H-InvDB. We mapped those human transcripts onto the human genome sequences (NCBI build 36.1) and determined 34 699 human gene clusters, which could define 34 057 protein-coding and 642 non-protein-coding loci; 858 transcribed loci overlapped with predicted pseudogenes.

The scattering of the radioactive, weakly bound, halo nucleus $$^{11}$$Be from $$^{209}$$Bi has been studied at 40 MeV. The measurement performed with a low-intensity and a large-emittance secondary beam could be made using an extremely compact, large solid angle ($$sim$$ 2$$pi$$ sr) detecting set-up, based on 8 highly segmented Si telescopes. The $$^{9,11}$$Be scattering angular distributions, as well as their relative reaction cross-sections, resulted to be rather similar. This may suggest that at Coulomb barrier energies the halo structure and the small weakly binding energy of the $$^{11}$$Be projectile have no big influence on the reaction dynamics.

We report the first genome-wide identification and characterization of alternative splicing in human gene transcripts based on analysis of the full-length cDNAs. Applying both manual and computational analyses for 56 419 completely sequenced and precisely annotated full-length cDNAs selected for the H-Invitational human transcriptome annotation meetings, we identified 6877 alternative splicing genes with 18 297 different alternative splicing variants. A total of 37 670 exons were involved in these alternative splicing events. The encoded protein sequences were affected in 6005 of the 6877 genes. Notably, alternative splicing affected protein motifs in 3015 genes, subcellular localizations in 2982 genes and transmembrane domains in 1348 genes. Genome-wide annotations of alternative splicing, relying on full-length cDNAs, should lay firm groundwork for exploring in detail the diversification of protein function which is mediated by the alternative splicing variants.

Outline of the SFR component design and BOP project plan in the generation IV R&D programme

On a basis of Generation IV nuclear energy system, various R&D project plans for sodium cooled reactor have been drawn up including component design and balance of plant (CD and BOP). At present, CD and BOP for the reference SFR systems can be largely established from the existing knowledge and operation experience. Therefore, the project plan for CD and BOP R&D for Generation IV system is related to the system performance and the development of alternatives to the reference systems for enhanced performance with innovative technologies. This paper gives an outline of the SFR CD & BOP project plan that is examined as Generation IV R&D. The project plan covers advanced in-service inspection and repair, improved steam generator more reliability, advanced energy conversion system for higher efficiency, and leak-before-break assessment. The total schedule of the project plan consists of three steps: a viability study of proposal concepts (till 2006), performance tests for detail design specification (till 2010) and demonstration of system performance (till 2015). The R&D activities are carried out with international cooperation between France, Japan, Republic of Korea, the United Kingdom and the United States in the framework of Generation IV International Forum under the supervision of its SFR steering committee.

The hfs separation $$Deltanu$$ of $$^{126}$$Cs($$T$$$$_{1/2} = 1.63$$ m) in the 6s $$^2$$S$$_{1/2}$$ ground state was obtained in a precision measurement near zero magnetic field by means of atomic beam magnetic resonance with laser optical pumping on-line with the CERN-PSB-ISOLDE mass separator. The result, $$Deltanu = 3629.514(0.001)$$ MHz, corrects significantly a previous published value from a high-field experiment. With our result, the precision of the nuclear magnetic moment, $$mu(^{126}$$Cs)$$sim 0.776 mu_N$$, is now limited by the influence of extended nuclear structure on the hfs (the Bohr-Weisskopf effect).

Direct observation microscopically elucidated the behaviour of vortices in Bi-2212 thin films. The isotropic pinning of vortices by columnar defects at low magnetic fields indirectly inferred by macroscopic magnetization measurements can be explained microscopically as follows; vortex lines are trapped along columns ate temperatures above 19K irrespective of the direction of the applied magnetic field; and at temperatures below 12K vortex lines always penetrate the film perpendicularly to the film plane owing to the increased background pinning compared to the columnar-defect pinning and also because of the demagnetization effect of thin film.
