Promotion for establishing and maintaining appropriate responses in the safeguards activities

Shirafuji, Masaya; Nozaki, Teo; Akutsu, Narumi*; Miyaji, Noriko; Nakamura, Hironobu

In order to maintain transparency in the peaceful use of nuclear materials in Japan, it is important to appropriately respond to safeguards activities conducted by the IAEA/Japan. Failure to respond appropriately to these activities could have significant impacts, such as raising suspicion from the international community about the misuse of nuclear materials by not only the operators but also by Japan. In order to strengthen activities to appropriately respond to safeguards activities, JAEA has started (I) education on safeguards for all employees directly employed by JAEA, (II) lectures, (III) case studies, and (IV) standardization of procedures related to safeguards response since FY2020, following the methods used to foster nuclear security culture in the past. This report describes these specific activities.

In emergency situation of nuclear facilities, we need to estimate the radiation dose due to radiation and radioactivity to grasp the influence range of the accident in the early stage. Therefore, we prepare the case studies of dose assessment for public exposure dose and personal exposure dose and contribute them to emergency procedures. This document covers about accidents of nuclear facilities in Nuclear Science Research Institute and past accident of nuclear power plant, and it can be used for inheritance of techniques of emergency dose assessment.

no journal, ,

Beryllium metal is used as a neutron reflector in the JMTR. JMTR is scheduled to restart on FY2012. Furthermore, the study of material to improve lifetime of beryllium frame is being conducted. In this study, the corrosion behavior of beryllium metal has been investigated under JMTR reactor-water-simulated condition. Beryllium metal samples for this study are S-200F, S-65H and I-220H, and were prepared by Vacuum Hot Pressing (VHP) and Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP). The corrosion test changed corrosion time, and was examined under pure water at 50$$^{circ}$$C. After the corrosion test, X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) were examined as a surface analysis of beryllium metal, and electrical conductivity and impurity measurement were examined as a water analysis. As a result, I-220H indicated the highest corrosion resistance of three beryllium metal samples.

An Examination of analysis for $$ ^{90}$$Sr in large water samples

Tomita, Jumpei; Nozaki, Teo; Tanimura, Yoshihiko; Yoshizawa, Michio

no journal, ,

Preconcentration method of Sr with Powdex resin (PCH for cation) at the field was examined to develop the analytical method for $$ ^{90}$$Sr in large water samples, which enables the analysis for a number of samples. In the experiment with 250 L of tap water samples, nearly 100% of Sr in water was adsorbed at 1 g L$$^{-1}$$ of PCH/water ratio, and duplication of boiling with 3M HNO$$_{3}$$ at 0.2 g mL$$^{-1}$$ of PCH/3M HNO$$_{3}$$ allowed the elution of 80% of Sr adsorbed.
