Ion species/energy dependence of irradiation-induced lattice structure transformation and surface hardness of Ni$$_{3}$$Nb and Ni$$_{3}$$Ta intermetallic compounds

Bulk samples of Ni$$_{3}$$Nb and Ni$$_{3}$$Ta intermetallic compounds were irradiated with 16 MeV Au, 4.5 MeV Ni, 4.5 MeV Al, 200 MeV Xe and 1.0 MeV He ions, and the change in near-surface lattice structure was investigated by means of the grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD)and EXAFS. The Ni$$_{3}$$Nb and Ni$$_{3}$$Ta lattice structures transform from the ordered structures (orthorhombic and monoclinic structures for Ni$$_{3}$$Nb and Ni$$_{3}$$Ta, respectively) to the amorphous state by the Au, Ni, Al and Xe ion irradiations. Irrespective of such heavy ion species or energies, the lattice structure transformation to the amorphous state almost correlate with the density of energy deposited through elastic collisions.

Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) analyses were performed to evaluate REDOX (REDuction and OXidation) state of platinoid elements in simulated high-level nuclear waste glass samples prepared under different conditions of temperature and atmosphere. At first, EXAFS functions were compared with those of standard materials such as RuO$$_2$$. Then structural parameters were obtained from a curve fitting analysis. In addition, a fitting analysis used a linear combination of the two standard EXAFS functions of a given elements metal and oxide was applied to determine ratio of metal/oxide in the simulated glass. The redox state of Ru was successfully evaluated from the linear combination fitting results of EXAFS functions. The ratio of metal increased at more reducing atmosphere and at higher temperatures. Chemical form of rhodium oxide in the simulated glass samples was RhO$$_2$$ unlike expected Rh$$_2$$O$$_3$$. It can be estimated rhodium behaves according with ruthenium when the chemical form is oxide.

We have developed a 1 kHz regenerative amplifier using an Yb:Y$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$ ceramic thin disk as the gain medium. Furthermore, the thermal conductivity and heat generation property of Yb: Y$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$ ceramic were investigated. In the developed regenerative amplifier, a laser beam is bounced off the thin disk six times in each round trip. The output energy is over 2 mJ, spectral bandwidth is 1.8 nm at FWHM, and pulse duration after pulse compression is 0.9 ps.

Development of multi pass pumping module for thin disk laser material

We develop high repetitive and short pulse laser system using Yb doped laser ceramics for future laser application of generating high power tera-hertz wave for experimental proof of isotope separation and generating a Laser-Compton Scattering $$gamma$$-ray source for precise specific isotopes analysis. As these future laser applications needs very stable and high average power laser system, we develop thin disk laser system using Yb:YAG ceramics because of its large stored energy property and large thermal conductivity, which could avoid thermal induced effects and thermal fracture limitation due to large pumping power. A few hundred $$mu$$m thickness of thin disk laser material in laser amplifier needs multi pass optical components for enough absorption of pump power, the pumping profile and spot size on laser disk should be variable for required laser performance. We design multi pass pumping module for thin disk laser material which consists of commercial optical components and precise stages and also design doublet and triplet for various pumping profile and spot size, the laser oscillation power is evaluated with this pumping module.

Due to the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident in March 2011, the safe and secure implementations of the decommissioning for Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant has been positioned as the urgent tasks in Japan. Japan Atomic Energy Agency has a critical mission of analysing radioactive wastes having generated by the accident for long-term storage and disposal methods. This will be performed in two hot laboratories to be constructed in Okuma Analysis and Research Center at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant site. In one laboratory, radioactive wastes such as rubbles and secondary wastes will be treated, whereas debris such as fuel debris and high dose structural materials will be handled in the other laboratory. The detail considerations for advanced techniques and experimental apparatus to be installed are underway.

We have developed a 1 kHz repetition picosecond laser system dedicated for intense terahertz (THz) pulse generation. The system comprises a chirped pulse amplification laser equipped with a Yb:YAG thin-disk amplifier. At room temperature, the Yb:YAG thin-disk regenerative amplifier provides pulses having energy of over 10 mJ and spectral bandwidth of 1.2 nm. The pulse duration achieved after passage through a diffraction grating pair compressor was 1.3 ps. By employing this picosecond laser as a pump source, THz pulses having a peak frequency of 0.3 THz and 4 $$mu$$J of energy were generated by means of optical rectification in an Mg-doped LiNbO$$_{3}$$ crystal.

Current status of the driver laser system for intense terahertz wave generation

We have constructed a high power kHz laser system using Yb:YAG thin-disk as a gain medium for a driver laser of THz wave generation. A 4-bounce regenerative amplifier is constructed and output energy up to 10 mJ is obtained. Using compressed pulse, we demonstrated THz wave generation with LiNbO$$_{3}$$ crystal.

Contact grating device with Fabry-Perot resonator for effective terahertz light generation

A novel design for a contact grating device with an incorporated Fabry-Perot resonator is proposed for high-power terahertz light (THz) generation. We deposited a multilayer consisting of Ta$$_{2}$$O$$_{5}$$ and Al$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$ on a magnesium-doped stoichiometric LiNbO$$_{3}$$ substrate and fabricated grating grooves on the outermost layer. The multilayer was designed such that conditions for a Fabry-Perot resonator were satisfied for light diffracted by the grating. Consequently, the fraction of light transmitted into the LiNbO$$_{3}$$ substrate, i.e., the diffraction efficiency, was enhanced by the resonator. The diffraction efficiency of the fabricated device was 71%, which is close to the calculated value of 78% from the optimized design. THz light generation was also demonstrated with the contact grating device. The THz output of 0.41 microJ was obtained using NIR pump light of 2.7 mJ.

High power laser developments with femtosecond to nanosecond pulse durations for laser shock science and engineering

We describe three specific high power laser systems that are being developed in our laboratory for many applications in high field science, nonlinear optics and material processing. We report on a femtosecond petawatt-class Ti:sapphire chirped-pulse amplification laser system that can produce a pulse energy of 20 J of 40 fs pulse duration, a picosecond high intensity Yb:YAG chirped-pulse amplification laser system that can generate a pulse energy of 100 mJ of 0.5 ps pulse duration, and a nanosecond high repetition rate Nd:YAG laser system that can provide an average power of 360 W with a pulse duration of 30 ns delivered at a 1 kHz repetition rate. We discuss the basic design aspects and present the results from our experimental investigations of these laser systems.

We have developed the femto-second laser pump and soft X-ray laser probe system in order to observe the dynamical processes of the femto-second laser ablation. By using this system, we succeed to obtain the temporal evolution of the soft X-ray reflectivity from the laser induced Pt surface. The results lead that the rate of decrease in the reflectivity of the probe beam has a non-linear relation with the pump laser fluence.

We designed and fabricated high damage-resistant AR coating using Al$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$/SiO$$_{2}$$ layers. As a result of irradiation test using 500 ps pulses at 1 kHz, the damage threshold of the AR coating was estimated to be over 36 J/cm$$^{2}$$ (average value). We also fabricated high reflection (HR) mirrors using Al$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$/SiO$$_{2}$$ layers added on Ta$$_{2}$$O$$_{5}$$/SiO$$_{2}$$ layers and measured damage threshold of them for 7 ns, 500 ps, and 1 ps pulses.

The modifying of the JT-60U magnet system to the superconducting coils (JT-60SA) is progressing as a satellite facility for ITER by both parties of Japanese government and European commission (EU) in the Broader Approach agreement. The magnet system for JT-60SA consists of 18 Toroidal Field (TF) coils, a Central Solenoid (CS) with 4 modules, and 6 Equilibrium Field (EF) coils. The manufacturing of the JT-60SA magnet system is in progress in EU and Japan. The JT-60SA superconducting magnet system generates an average heat load of 3.2 kW at 4 K to the cryoplant, from nuclear and thermal radiation, conduction and electromagnetic heating, and requires current supplies 20 kA for 4 CS modules and 6 EF coils, 25.7 kA to 18 TF coils. The helium flow to remove this heat, consisting of supercritical helium at pressures up to 0.5 MPa and temperature between 4.4-4.8 K, is distributed to the coils and structures through the valve box (VB) from the cryoline connecting to the auxiliary cold box located outside the torus hall. The feeders also contain the electrical supplies from the current lead transitions to room temperature to the coil. The feeder components consist of the in-cryostat feeders with flexible parts to allow coil operational displacements from the connection pipes out of the cryostat, including S-bend conductor to allow differential thermal contraction and the coil terminal boxes (CTBs) with HIS current leads. A measurement and control system is required to monitor and control these coils and feeders for safety and optimal operational availability. For each coil, both current and supercritical helium are supplied from external systems and are controlled from a central system as part of the regular operation with plasma pulses. Quench detection instruments for superconducting coils, feeders and HTS current leads are provided as a separate, stand alone system.

The molten state of simulated high-level waste glass and the behavior of ruthenium element in the melt were investigated by using synchrotron radiation based X-ray imaging technique. Melting, generating and moving of bubbles, condensation and sedimentation of ruthenium element were observed dynamically in continuous 12-bit gray-scale images from the CCD camera. X-ray intensity was obtained easily by digitizing gray-scale values in the image. The existence of ruthenium element is emphasized as a black color in the CCD image at X-ray energy higher than the Ru K-absorption edge. Position sensitive imaging X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) measurement was also performed to clarify the chemical state of ruthenium element in the melt.

Improvement of diffraction efficiency of dielectric transmission gratings using anti-reflection coatings

A novel method for increasing diffraction efficiency of transmission gratings is proposed. In this method, dielectric multilayers are inserted between a grating region and a substrate. These multilayers work as an anti-reflection coating for the transmission grating. It is presented that a grating with 1740 grooves/mm has the diffraction efficiency over 99% using this anti-reflection coating.

Experimental verification of femtosecond laser ablation schemes by time-resolved soft X-ray reflective imaging

Pump and probe reflective imaging using a soft X-ray laser probe was applied to the observation of the early stage of femtosecond laser ablation process on platinum. In strongly excited area, drastic and fast reflectivity drop was observed. In moderately excited area, the decay of the reflectivity is slower than that in the strongly excited area, and the reflectivity reaches its minimum at t = 160 ps. In weakly excited area, laser-induced reflectivity change was not observed. These results give the critical information about the femtosecond laser ablation.

High intensity, high temporal contrast, high repetition-rate laser for laser driven particle acceleration

We have reported hundred mJ level, femtosecond pulse duration with the high temporal contrast in an OPCPA/Yb:YAG ceramic thin disk laser system at 10 Hz repetition rate. At an input laser pulse energy of 3.8 mJ from the OPCPA preamplifer the output energy of 130 mJ with spectral bandwidth of 2.5 nm has been obtained from multipass Yb:YAG ceramic thin disk amplifier, and the optical efficiency from LD energy to amplified laser pulse is 9.6%. The recompressed laser pulse duration was measured to be 450 fs. Because the compressor efficiency exceeds 73% the compressed pulse energy can potentially be as high as 95 mJ. The contrast level of this laser pulse was measured to be less than 7.2$$times$$10$$^{-9}$$ at -150 ps. This novel laser system after further amplification using additional amplifiers can be useful for the laser-driven proton acceleration in future.
