In biology, it is expected to understand the mechanism of herd development by analyzing crowd behavior. Currently, medaka (Oryzias latipes) is often used when conducting such research because of its ease of breeding and experimentation. However, when conducting such studies, it is very difficult to manually obtain herd data. In this article, in order to analyze the behavior of medaka, we will introduce a method to automatically extract the swimming trajectory of medaka from time-series images and acquire the data necessary for behavior analysis. In particular, the improvement of extraction accuracy is achieved by processing the overlap state and adjoin state of medaka in the image.

The neutron instruments suite, installed at the spallation neutron source of the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), is reviewed. MLF has 23 neutron beam ports and 21 instruments are in operation for user programs or are under commissioning. A unique and challenging instrumental suite in MLF has been realized via combination of a high-performance neutron source, optimized for neutron scattering, and unique instruments using cutting-edge technologies. All instruments are/will serve in world-leading investigations in a broad range of fields, from fundamental physics to industrial applications. In this review, overviews, characteristic features, and typical applications of the individual instruments are mentioned.

Medaka blastoderm cells are capable of compensating the injured cells irradiated by carbon-ion micro-beam

In this present study, we examined the effects of heavy carbon-ions on development in pre-implantation period utilizing medaka blastula stage embryos (st. 11: blastderm diameter is about 500 $$mu$$m). We performed targeted irradiation by carbon-ion micro-beam (diameters of 120, 180 $$mu$$m) to a central parts of blastoderm and observed the abnormalities during development compared with whole-body irradiated embryos. As a results, retardation and characteristic malformed eyes were observed during development when blastoderm cells were partially irradiated, However, more than half of 50 Gy-irradiated embryos (area size=120 $$mu$$m diameter) could hatch normally in contrast to all embryos with 2 Gy of whole-body irradiation being lethal before hutching.

Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident (Fukushima accident) has brought about a great change in many people's perceptions about nuclear power plant safety. When discussing future energy options for Japan, it is important to have a full grasp of the attitude of a large number of people towards nuclear energy. The Atomic Energy Society of Japan has conducted annual questionnaire survey of 500 adults who live within 30 kilometers of Tokyo Station. The aim of this survey is to assess trends in public attitude towards nuclear energy. The authors that designed the questionnaire entries of this survey have been managing questionnaire data as members of the Data Management Working Group under the Social and Environmental Division of the Atomic Energy Society of Japan. We confirmed the change in public attitude towards nuclear energy through this periodical survey after the Fukushima accident. In particular, public concerns about the use of nuclear energy increased after the Fukushima accident, and many people have raised doubts over the use of nuclear energy in the future.

Thin films of amorphous Si$$_{3}$$N$$_{4}$$ (thickness 20 nm) were irradiated with 120-720 keV C$$_{60}$$$$^{+,2+}$$ ions and observed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The ion track produced in an amorphous material was directly observed by TEM. For quantitative analysis, the ion tracks were also observed using high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM). The observed ion track consists of a low density core (radius $$sim$$2.5 nm) and a high density shell (width $$sim$$2.5 nm), which is very similar to the ion tracks in amorphous SiO$$_{2}$$ irradiated with high energy heavy ions observed by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Although the observed ion tracks may be affected by surface effects, the present result indicates that TEM and HAADF-STEM have potential to observe directly the fine structures of ion tracks in amorphous materials.

Key technologies for Japan Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor (JSFR) have been evaluated. The ten technologies: high burn-up fuel, safety enhancement, compact reactor vessel, two-loop cooling system using high chromium steel, integrated intermediate heat exchanger/pump component, reliable steam generator, natural circulation decay heat removal system, simplified fuel handling system, containment vessel made of steel plate reinforced concrete and advanced seismic isolation system have been confirmed to be feasible to be installed a conceptual design of demonstration JSFR to be ready for large scale demonstration experiments.

In the FaCT project, SFR with 1,500 MWe is a target for the commercialization. R&D on innovative technologies to achieve the economic competitiveness and enhance the reliability and safety is carried out. A compact RV without wall-cooling layer is pursued in consideration of seismic reliability. For a two-loop cooling system with shortened high chromium steel piping, studies on the hydraulics in the pipe elbow and the fabrication capability of the pipes are being performed. A double-walled straight tube SG is investigated to enhance the reliability against sodium/water reaction, and developmental works are progressing including the thermal-hydraulic design and trial manufacturing for components. SASS is being developed with safety analysis of the applicability for JSFR and experimental demonstration in JOYO. An advanced fuel handling system is also pursued. Discussion on whether the innovative technologies can be adopted for JSFR is in progress to be finalized in 2010.

We report on the event structure and double helicity asymmetry ($$A_{LL}$$) of jet production in longitudinally polarized $$p + p$$ collisions at $$sqrt{s}$$ = 200 GeV. Photons and charged particles were measured by the PHENIX experiment. Event structure was compared with the results from PYTHIA event generator. The production rate of reconstructed jets is satisfactorily reproduced with the next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculation. We measured $$A_{LL}$$ = -0.0014 $$pm$$ 0.0037 at the lowest $$P_T$$ bin and -0.0181 $$pm$$ 0.0282 at the highest $$P_T$$ bin. The measured $$A_{LL}$$ is compared with the predictions that assume various $$Delta G(x)$$ distributions.

Transverse momentum distributions and yields for $$pi^{pm}, K^{pm}, p$$, and $$bar{p}$$ in $$p + p$$ collisions at $$sqrt{s}$$ = 200 and 62.4 GeV at midrapidity are measured by the PHENIX experiment at the RHIC. We present the inverse slope parameter, mean transverse momentum, and yield per unit rapidity at each energy, and compare them to other measurements at different $$sqrt{s}$$ collisions. We also present the scaling properties such as $$m_T$$ and $$x_T$$ scaling and discuss the mechanism of the particle production in $$p + p$$ collisions. The measured spectra are compared to next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations.

Azimuthal correlations of electrons from heavy-flavor decay with hadrons in $$p+p$$ and Au+Au collisions at $$sqrt{s_{NN}}$$ = 200 GeV

Measurements of electrons from the decay of open-heavy-flavor mesons have shown that the yields are suppressed in Au+Au collisions compared to expectations from binary-scaled $$p+p$$ collisions. Here we extend these studies to two particle correlations where one particle is an electron from the decay of a heavy flavor meson and the other is a charged hadron from either the decay of the heavy meson or from jet fragmentation. These measurements provide more detailed information about the interaction between heavy quarks and the quark-gluon matter. We find the away-side-jet shape and yield to be modified in Au+Au collisions compared to $$p+p$$ collisions.
