The EAGLE in-pile ID1 test has been performed by Japan Atomic Energy Agency to demonstrate early fuel discharge from a fuel subassembly with an inner duct structure, which is named FAIDUS. It was deduced that early duct wall failure observed in the test was initiated by high heat flux from the molten pool of fuel and steel mixture. The posttest analyses suggest that molten pool-to-duct wall heat transfer might be enhanced effectively by the molten steel with large thermal conductivity in the pool without the presence of fuel crust on the duct wall. In this study, mechanisms of heat transfer from the molten pool to the duct wall was analyzed using a fully Lagrangian approach based on the finite volume particle method for multi-component, multi-phase flows. A series of pin disruption, molten pool formation and duct wall failure behaviors was simulated to investigate mixing and separation behavior of molten steel and fuel in the pool, and their effect on molten pool-to-duct wall heat transfer. The present 2D particle-based simulations demonstrated that large thermal load beyond 10 MW/m on the duct wall was caused by effective heat transfer due to direct contact of liquid fuel with nuclear heat to the duct wall.

The measured resonance peaks of XAS spectra near Si K-edge have been assigned in comparison with the discrete variational (DV)-X molecular orbital calculations. The rapid delocalization of Si 1s core-excited electron through the empty conduction band was observed along the polymer chain with the energy dependent RAS measurement, and the electron delocalization time was estimated based on the core-hole clock method.

The manufacturing design concept is that the vessel is split in the 10 toroidal sectors manufactured at factory, and assembled on-site; seven of the 40-degree sectors, two of the 30-degree beside final one, and the final of the 20-degree. The final sector is assembled with the VV thermal shield and toroidal field magnets into the 340-degree as prepared in one sector. Sectors are temporally fitted on-site and adjusted one over the other before the assembly. After measurement of the dimensions and the reference, these sectors are transferred onto the cryostat base. First, three 80-degree sectors are manufactured with mating each 40-degree sector by direct joint welding. The rest sectors including the final sector are jointed with splice plates. Welding manipulator and its guide rails are used for these welding. In this paper, the detail of the VV sectors assembly including the final sector is explained. Welding technologies to joint the two of 40-degree sectors are reported with the present manufacturing status and the welding trial on the vertical stub with the partial mock-up of the final sector are discussed with the assembly process.

Times Cited Count:13 Percentile:53.92(Metallurgy & Metallurgical Engineering)To characterize the distribution and anisotropy of dislocations in cold-drawn pearlitic steel wires, X-ray diffraction line-profile analysis was performed using synchrotron radiation micro-beams. The plastic shear strain was generally more severe near the surface than the center of the wire, whereas the dislocation density distribution was almost constant from the center to the surface. On the other hand, the dislocation rearrangement, which evolves the dislocation cell structure, progressed closer to the surface. It was also revealed that a difference between the hardness in axial and transverse wire directions could be explained by anisotropic dislocation density. Line-profile analysis based on diffraction data at elevated temperatures was performed. Whereas the cementite recovery progressed at a constant rate, the ferrite phase recovery rate was temperature-dependent, suggesting that the ferrite phase recovery was less related to that of the cementite phase.

Times Cited Count:3 Percentile:19.06(Optics)By introducing 13th- (61.7 nm) and 15th-order harmonics (53.4 nm) of femtosecond laser pulses at 800 nm into an undulator of SCSS (SPring-8 Compact SASE Source) test accelerator at RIKEN, these harmonic pulses were amplified by a factor of more than 10 with a high contrast ratio through the interaction between accelerated electron bunches and the harmonic pulses. From numerical simulations of the amplification processes of high-order harmonic pulses in the undulator, optimum conditions of the electron bunch duration interacting with the high-order harmonic pulses were investigated for generating full-coherent and intense pulses in the extreme ultraviolet wavelength region.

We have demonstrated free-electron laser radiation seeded by high-order harmonics in the extreme-ultraviolet region. Strong enhancement of the radiation intensity by a factor of 104 was observed with timing control of an electro-optical sampling technique.

Times Cited Count:8 Percentile:49.7(Physics, Nuclear)Measurements of electrons from the decay of open-heavy-flavor mesons have shown that the yields are suppressed in Au+Au collisions compared to expectations from binary-scaled collisions. Here we extend these studies to two particle correlations where one particle is an electron from the decay of a heavy flavor meson and the other is a charged hadron from either the decay of the heavy meson or from jet fragmentation. These measurements provide more detailed information about the interaction between heavy quarks and the quark-gluon matter. We find the away-side-jet shape and yield to be modified in Au+Au collisions compared to collisions.

Times Cited Count:96 Percentile:96.45(Optics)The 13th harmonic of a Ti:sapphire (Ti:S) laser in the plateau region was injected as a seeding source to a 250-MeV free-electron-laser (FEL) amplifier. When the amplification conditions were fulfilled, strong enhancement of the radiation intensity by a factor of 650 was observed. The random and uncontrollable spikes, which appeared in the spectra of the Self-Amplified Spontaneous Emission (SASE) based FEL radiation without the seeding source, were found to be suppressed drastically to form to a narrow-band, single peak profile at 61.2 nm. The properties of the seeded FEL radiation were well reproduced by numerical simulations. We discuss the future precept of the seeded FEL scheme to the shorter wavelength region.

Chemically inert and well-characterized [Re]CpTR-Gly was conjugated with 3-amino-1-hydroxypropylidene-1,1-bisphosphonate and purified by HPLC to prepare [Re]CpTR-Gly-APD. Plasma stability, plasma protein binding, hydroxyapatite (HA) binding and the pharmacokinetics of [Re]CpTR-Gly-APD were compared with those of Re 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonate (HEDP). The HPLC-purified [Re]CpTR-Gly-APD showed higher plasma stability, higher HA binding, higher bone accumulation and lower plasma protein binding than did Re -HEDP. Although Re -HEDP possessed HA binding and bone accumulation similar to those of [Re]CpTR-Gly-APD, the specific activity of Re -labeled BPs was found to play a crucial role in bone accumulation and blood clearance. Thus, the molecular design of chelate-conjugated BP would be useful for the development of bone-seeking radiopharmaceuticals with a variety of radionuclides by selecting chelating molecules that provide high specific activities.

We have performed migration experiments of Np(V) and Am(III) for crushed granite, under the coexistent condition with humic acid substance. As for Np, the periodical concentration changes in the breakthrough curve and the migration velocity of Np passed through the column were not affected by the coexistence of the humic substance. As for Am, on the other hand, the periodical concentration changes in the breakthrough curve were affected by the humic substance concentration. The migration behavior of Am passed through the present column system could be expressed by a migration model taking account of the non-equilibrium state.

Migration data of Sr,Np and Pu in natural aquifer were collected by a field test, which was performed in an aquifer at 30 m under ground surface of the field test site. Migration parameters for analysis of the results obtained the field test were measured by laboratory column tests and batch tests. Diffusion coefficient corresponding to water velocity was determined from the relationship between water velocity and diffusion length, which obtained from the column tests. Distribution coefficient was determined by considering confident ability of data, test conditions, and environmental conditions. One dimensional migration behavior of the radionuclides in aquifer, calculated by using the migration parameters obtained from the batch and column tests, agreed with the results obtained from the field test. It was confirmed that the migration behavior of alpha-nuclides could be evaluated by applying the conventional equation for evaluating the radionuclide migration and the migration parameters obtained from laboratory tests.
